Truthfully, I have no idea how this reading ties into food except that it mentions a restaurant the serves turtle soup, coffee, and how coffin remind the writer about loaves of bread. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the piece very much as it seemed the writer was creating the story from the stream of consciousness. I’ve always enjoyed stories that were written in the stream of consciousness even though they are sometimes particularly difficult to read. Anyway, a connection between New Orleans food culture and a personal experience. Well, being that I’m from a town only two hours away from here most if New Orleans food culture is the same as my own food culture. Gumbo is a serious part of culture, we cook red beans every Monday, and we indulge in crawfish ettoufe quite often. So as far as personal experience goes, most everything I put I eat at home is related to New Orleans because our food traditions are the same.

week eight Sunday, Dec 11 2011

Katharine Drexel was born on November 26, 1858 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born into an extremely wealthy family that invested in numerous banks and her uncle was the founder of Drexel University in Philadelphia. As a young woman, she met Pope Leo XIII in Europe and from that moment on she had a life changing experience. She assumed the role of a missionary and became interested in the well-being of African Americans and Native Americans. She founded the order of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, where the sisters who joined the order were primarily focused on the well-being of African Americans and Native Americans. St. Katharine Drexel established numerous schools, convents, and churches in the South and West to cater to the needs of the two minority groups. She used her incredible amount of inheritance to fund the operations of these establishments and often traveled a long distance to pay a visit to each one to monitor their progress. She is most famous for establishing Xavier University in New Orleans, where it started out as a school for teachers. The campus later expended and has become one of the most renowned universities in the nation. On October 1, 2000 she was canonized as a saint. She was a humble woman of prayer, who was dedicated to making a difference in the world.  believe that St. Katharine Drexel would be extremely proud of Xavier University today. It is nationally recognized as the number one school in preparing African Americans to go to medical school.  This school provides a chance for African American students to be well rounded individuals both educationally and spiritually. Her vision for an equal opportunity of success for people of color is definitely evident in Xavier University.

Week 8 Response Saturday, Dec 10 2011

I did some research on St. Katherine Drexel, and it was quite obvious that she was a very giving person. Through her dedication of serving others, St Katherine Drexel was able to establish schools for Native and African-Americans that would otherwise not been able to receive an education. Her contributes to others, is most likely why Xavier wants to give back to the community and help others. If she were to see Xavier today I feel that she would and would not be happy. For example she would probably like the fact that Xavier continues make community service a point. However I feel that most students do community service not because they want to help, but because it looks “good” we they apply for further education like medical school. With this I think that Katharine Drexel would not prove because it’s not heartfelt but instead opportunity driven. Given that Katharine Drexel was an advocate for education I feel that she would prove on Xavier’s academic “standings”. I feel this way because Xavier offers a number of programs that help students to move onto professional programs of their choice. I also feel that it would be better if, there was more emphasize put on majors outside of the science realm because they are equally important. In regards to the Catholic religion, I feel that St. Katherine Drexel would be somewhat disappointed to see that the religion isn’t a major/ significant presence on the campus, primarily because the University is a Catholic institution.  Lastly I feel the St. Katharine Drexel would be somewhat disappointed that there are not as many male students seeking an education at Xavier. This is because; males and females alike should pursue higher education at equal ratios of one another. . Given that it is 2011, it should be that more males would be attending college at the same rate.

Katherine Mary Drexel, better know as Saint Katherine Drexel, was born on November 26, 1858 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to her parents Francis Anthony Drexel and Hannah Langstroth. She was born into a family who raised her in a wealthy lifestyle. Her family owned a banking fortune and her uncle was the founder of Drexel University. Later in life she became a nun and along with the change in lifestyle, she decided to devote her time and inheritance to broken Native Americans and African Americans in the United States. With her intense drive set out to help these oppressed ethnic groups, she created an order by the name of The Sister of the Blessed Sacrament. She helped to finance over sixty schools and in her journey she founded Xavier University of Louisiana. As of today, Xavier University of Louisiana is the only catholic historically black college. If Katherine Drexel were still alive I think she would have her likes and dislikes of Xavier today. She would most definitely be proud to see that the school is challenging its students academically and that these challenges has kept the graduation rates high and also the acceptance into Graduate school. Another aspect that would make her happy is that Xavier is still a historically black college and has become more diverse over the years. A negative aspect would be the tuition that has been set for accepted students. She started this college to help those ethnic groups to get a great education without having to pay such outrageous prices and the tuition today would not meet her standards. But overall, Saint Katherine Drexel woud be happy with her choice to invest in such a prestige university.

Do some research on Katherine Drexel. Do you think she would be happy with Xavier today? Why or why not? Sunday, Dec 4 2011

Katherine Drexel would be pleased with Xavier University today.  I say this because it is still based off of giving African Americans an opportunity to have the best higher education.  She would be pleased to know that it is still a catholic institution.  She would however probably not be pleased with the way that some of the people carry themselves on the campus.  She would be happy with how successful the University has become. She would be proud to know that the University has outstanding records for getting African Americans into medical schools and post-secondary schools after college.  She would be proud at the fact that the university is well known.  She would be proud to know that her legacy is being kept.  She would be glad to know that the University actually takes time out to recognize her achievements and to give us some history about her and her legacy that she has created for the University.  I believe that she is smiling and happy that she could have done so much for minorities.  I believe that she is happy to know that she has given African Americans such a great opportunity that their ancestors could not have.  I believe that she is happy because instead of taking her money and living the lavish lifestyle she invested into something that she was really passionate about, and to see that it is now such a big inspiration for others.  Katherine Drexel should be very impressed with the University today because it is still attributed to her first beliefs and because her inspiration, contribution, acts of help to wards others has paid off in a way that people all over the world are so thankful for. In closing she should be very impressed with everything that this University has become today.

Katherine Drexel… Do you think she would be happy with Xavier today? Why or why not? Sunday, Dec 4 2011

Katherine Drexel was a nun that did a lot within her community. Her family has a large amount of money from banking. Her uncle was actually the founder of Drexel University. When she became a nun, she gave herself the name Sister Katharine. She voiced the opinons of African Americans and Native American across the United States. She then started a religious order called the Sister of the Blessed Sacrament. She gave money to at least 60 schools around the United States. She also founded our beloved University: Xavier University. I do think that she would be happy with Xavier and what it stands for now. Xavier University is still the only historically black and Catholic University in the world. Xavier University is also the nationally rank #1 for African American students getting into medical school. I think that she would think that Xavier is doing a fine job of helping out minority races to gain an education. Xavier has no changed much from their academics and still teaches that basic principles that I believed that she stood for. Xavier mission statements states: “The purpose of the University is to contribute the promotion of a more just and human society by preparing its student to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society. This preparation takes place in a diverse learning and teaching environment that incorporates all relevant educational means including research and community service.” I believe that if she was still alive that she would love this mission statement and would support it. She would want her beloved students to learn about community service and leadership and help out within their communities. She would want us to tell others and pass on our knowledge that we learn from Xavier. She would want to see how we take the fundamentals that we learn here and turn the world into a better place for minority of all races.

Week Eight Friday, Nov 11 2011

I believe that Katherine Drexel would indeed be pleased with the state that Xavier University is currently in. Xavier prides itself greatly on giving to others and this is shown through our want to volunteer and help others. Were also a proud HBCU that gives out a quality education. The university also stayed Catholic and still has nuns and priests on campus which would probably bring great joy to her.

Katherine Mary Drexel, better know as Saint Katherine Drexel, was born on November 26, 1858 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to her parents Francis Anthony Drexel and Hannah Langstroth. She was boron into a family who owned a wealthy banking fortune and her uncle was the founder of Drexel University. After becoming a nun she devoted her inheritance to oppressed Native americans and African-americans in the United States. She believed that she needed to help out the most oppressed ethnic groups. She also created an order called The Sister of the Blessed Sacrement for Native Americans and  Africa americans. With her inheritance she helped finance more than sixty schools and actually founded Xavier University of Louisiana. Currently Xavier University of Louisiana is the only historically black college this catholic. I think Katherine Drexel would be happy and unhappy in some aspects of Xavier today. For example, I’m positive that she would be proud of Xavier’s notoriety for being academically challenging. Another part that she would be proud of is the graduation rates and the acceptance rates into Graduate schooling. Finally I think she would be happy of the fact that although Xavier is considered a historically black college the campus is still diverse with other races on campus. One of her reasons for creating this university was too help the minority out in America. I’m sure Katherine Drexel had a vision of an academically strong and diverse university when she used her inheritance. One aspect of Xavier that she may not like is the amount of tuition for the school, but Xavier is beginning to help out with more monetary scholarships to their dedicated students. This year is the first year they have given out full scholarships for tuition, room, and board. I still believe Sister Katherine Drexel would be proud of her investment into a university.

Do some research on Katherine Drexel. Do you think she would be happy with Xavier today? Why or why not?

Saint Katherine Drexel was born Novemeber 26, 1858, and died March 3, 1955. She was born in Philadelphia, and was a philanthropist and educator. Sister Katherine Drexel advocated for many Native Americans and African Americans. Sister Katherine Drexel had many contributions throughout her lifetime, also including the foundation for Xavier University. She started something that was unlike no other. Xavier University is the only historically black, Catholic university in the world. Xavier is also number one for placing African Amercians into medical school. I think Sister Katherine Drexel would be extremely proud that we are living up to her mission statement. She started something that was extremely good, and we’re showing our thanks to her by keeping up with our studies & the majority of us are being accepted into medical school.

Katharine Mary Drexel was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 26, 1858 to Francis Anthony Drexel and Hannah Langstroth. Her family owned a huge banking fortune. She isn’t the only one who is famous for founding a university. her  uncle Anthony Joesph Drexel was the founder of Drexel University in Philadelphia. She had two natural sisters,  whose names were Louise and Elizabeth.  When she became a nun, she took the name Sister Katherine. After that , she began dedicating herself and the money that she had inherited from her family’s bank fortune to Native Americans and African Americans in the western and southwestern United States. She believed that it was her duty to cater to the needs to of these two ethnic groups because of the distinct  state of oppression they were in. She also served as a vocal advocate of racial tolerance. The Sister of the Blessed Sacrament is a religious order that she inaugurated  for Indians and Colored People. In addition to that, she financed more than 60 missions and schools around the United States. Her most famous achievement however was the founding  Xavier University of Louisiana. To do this day, it remains the only historically Black, Roman Catholic university in the United States. I honestly think that if Katherine Drexel was still on this earth, she would be more than content with the status of the university she commenced. Xavier is known as one of the most astute colleges in the country. It is famous and nationally recognized as being the best at putting Africans Americans in medical school; am achievement that can lead to obtaining one of the highest paid jobs in the world. Also, they are currently building a bigger chapel. I think she would be extremely happy about that, being that being that Catholicism is what she based her life on.
