Katherine Drexel, Do you think she would be happy with Xavier today? Why or why not? Friday, Nov 21 2008

I think Katharine Drexel would be happy with Xavier today because of its major accomplishments, the christian background, and the students’ effort to suceed. Xavier is the number one university in the nation for placing minorities in medical school. Xavier has come a long way since its days of being a tiny school designated to help African-Americans. Xavier is one of the best historically black universities that provides a great challenge academically to its students. Another thing that Katharine Drexel would be proud of is how Xavier has held on to its catholic background. By just walking around campus one can see many nuns of the Blessed Sacrament. There is also a convent and church on campus so that the Xavier community doesn’t forget to uphold to christian lifestyles and morality. She is a key reason why Xavier existes today. She would be proud to know that Xavier is the only university founded by a  saint. That’s a major accomplishment. More importantly the work ethics in the students are great. It is very common to walk around campus and see students studying in groups. That shows how seriously the students take this opportunity to better their lives. The students attend meetings, classes, church, social events, and are always involved in community service. Volunteer work is a great pillar on which Xavier stands, creating a humane society is even in our school’s mission statement. I know all is not perfect with Xavier but I truly believe that Katharine Drexel would be pleased with all the efforts faculty, staff, students, and others are making to make this school the best it can possibly be.

My Favorite Madi Gras or City Festival I Have Attended Tuesday, Nov 18 2008

I always heard about Madi Gras but never got the chance to attend. I always thought about coming to attend one for my birthday, but now I end up rite in New Orleans where it all happens. Well since I havent been to one yet imma just tell you about my experience at a festival in Los Angeles, California. The biggest and famous parade is the celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday. Where everyone gets up early that morning and gather with their families to find good spots before the crowd comes. this parade being on for a long time now that it is a big tradition to people to attend and celebrate a man that had a dream. The Martin Luther King Jr. parade has a lot of action with beautiful floats, many famous people, elementary to high school bands, clubs, organizations, dancing groups and the world’s famous clown group tommy the clown. It’s really entertaining to the little kids and young adults where they have snack stands and cotton candy guys selling all kinds of stuff. Everyone will wear their nice Martin luther King shirts and hats to show some love to him on his day. You will also find a lot of family’s cooking and selling some good ole dinner plates for a reasonable price. Yeah so after the parade their will be a little jazz concert, games for the kids, booths from all type of different organizations and people selling homemade items or clothing. Just a day nobody could ever forget with all the fun they had with the thier children watching or being in the big event. From my experience I have been in this parade three times with my schools i have attended marching for about three hours. Thats one of the biggest festivals we will celebrate in Los Angeles, California.

What are your professional plans and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Saturday, Oct 25 2008

My future professional plans when I graduate from college is to become a sport’s medicine doctor or physical therapist. Coming into Xavier knowing that they will make my future come true. Xavier has the right mindstate for me. The Misson States that “The ultimate purpose of the University is the promotion of a more just and humane society. To this end, Xavier prepares its students to assume roles of leadership and service in society. This preparation takes place in a pluralistic teaching and learning environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including research and community service” (Xavier). I really belive this has a big affect on because im a leader and have good community service in society. Xavier will guide and lead me all the way to medical school to become that great therapist in life. I came to Xavier because they are number one in the nation that have the most African American students going to medical school and have a good pharmacy and pre med program. Xavier wants all their students to achieve well and get good grades for his/her to accomplish their goals. Remembering the time I wanted to become a physical therapist in the 11th grade, when i meet a lady that work at a therapist place and was telling me all about massages and all the different things you could do in that field. So that really told me what I wanted to major and what school to attend.  Xavier being that school that will give me more leadership and services I will become that good therapist one day.

Who do you think would make a great political leader and why? Thursday, Oct 23 2008

Many people believe that a great political leader requires more than anything ability. I disagree. A great political leader requires much more than just an ability to do the job. Someone can have all the ability and have a flawed character or other reasons for being in the political arena. A great political leader needs to possess intelligence, tolerance, wisdom, morals, experience, and a love of politics. They have to really be in politics because they feel strongly about helping others and making government in this country as beneficial as it can be. They must also have the ability as I mentioned earlier. These qualities are important because if someone can not control their own actions how can they control an entire nation. Experience is also important it doesnt have to be many years but it should be related to the area of politics the politician plans to go into. A politician can have ability and lack the experience on how things work then none of his policies would be enacted. Intelligence is important because eloquence and class comes with it, and we definetly don’t need someone who can’t speak proper english in any level of politics. I think tolerance is the most important, a great political leader should not be biased and remember that he or she is in the office not to better just one race or religion but all whether he or she agrees with their views or not. Morals are very important a great political leader must be able to discern if a situation is right or wrong since he or she will be making very important life-altering decisions. All in all a great political leader isn’t born, a great political leader is made.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Thursday, Oct 23 2008

My favorite class at Xavier University is Math. The class is challenging and keeps me focused.  On top of all that the professor is very wonderful. He really cares about where the students are as far as learning the material and he is very knowledgeable about the subject. We have to study math because it is one of the most important skills in our life that we use every day.  I also feel like this class is preparing me for the real world. For example, most classes such as history may not be used everyday on my job or in real life situations. However we use math everyday just to complete simple tasks such as going to the grocery store. We need it to live a finacially productive life. Another thing I like about math is the fact that it is logical. Everyone can learn to solve an equation because everything has a formula. It’s easy to remember. English words are pronounced differently than they look, but math is exactly what it appears to be. Math is a universal language and people who don’t speak English can solve the same problems as me. Math is very appealing also in terms of a career. I know it will always be used therefore you can always find a job in it. I wouldn’t have to worry about finding a job if I had a degree with something involving math. There would be a number of things that I could do compared to someone who choose another major. Math has alot of benefits to it.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Thursday, Oct 23 2008

It may sound crazy but I think poverty made New Orleans into the magical city that it is today. When someone is in poverty they don’t have access to the luxuries or even the basic necessities of life. This makes that person more self sufficent and creative. For example New Orleans id the birth place of jazz music. Jazz was so unique and flavored only because the poverty stricken got together to create an art that speaks to them and now it speaks to the entire world. Poverty is not anything to glorify but it shows that New Orleans is powerful enough to overcome it. I think someone maybe couldn’t afford all the right ingredients and beignets were created. Poverty is always good for New Orleans art scene because it gives flavor and creativity to the city like second lines. However poverty is not completely beneficial. With poverty comes high crime rates, medical issues such as diabetes, and addictions. People in other places may look at New Orleans as if its dangerous because of the poverty or they might believe other places are better. Poverty also hurts New Orleans because it paints the city’s citizens as lazy or down trodden although any one who has ever visited knows that this is so untrue. I guess in the same way that it hurts it helps for example, the city is known as the Big Easy and some may think its due to laziness from poverty and others that it is a good think. What one person likes about New Orleans the other may not, but whatever it is they like or dislike nine times out of ten is related to poverty.

Why Did I Choose to Come to Xavier? Sunday, Sep 21 2008

It was time to apply for early action applications. I decided to look for colleges under my major chemistry. Where I came across two good colleges. These two colleges were HBCUs: Xavier University of Louisiana and Howard University. I began to read about the two colleges knowing that I will beable to get in. Started to apply to both colleges and really think about which one will accept me first. As time passing by it was time to start recieving acceptance letters in the mail. I would check the mailbox everyday; come home from school to see if I recieved any mail from colleges. Well its been to straight weeks without recieving anything. Began to start thinking like “whats going on”! I was speaking to fast which i recieved my first letter from Xavier University of Louisiana. Jumping all around proudly, waited tell my mother and brother came home from work to open it. Called my firneds up telling them how exicited I was to recieve my first college letter. My family came home and I opened the letter with a big smile on my face. I begin to read the first line, you was accepted to Xavier University of Louisiana. I was happy! So i started to apply for my dorm room and everythingelse they was sending me. When I came August 15 by plane it was a long day and flight. I moved into my dorm all excited and meeting new people to. Thats how I chose Xavier because it was the first college to accept me from out of state. Which I also wanted to get away from home and experience something new. What a great decision I made.
