Katherine Drexel Monday, Dec 8 2008

St. Katherine Drexel was born on November 26, 1858. Her father was a wealthy banker. Her father and her step mother explained to her, her sister, and her step-sisters that their wealth is loaned to them and it should be shared with other people. St. Katherine Drexel  was home-schooled and she traveled a lot between the United States and Europe. In her 20′s she saw the struggles that Native Americans and African Americans were going through and decided she need to help them by building approximately 60 schools, including Xavier University, in her lifetime.

I do not believe St. Katherine Drexel would be happy entirely with Xavier. I think she would be happy about the school still being majority black. And that the school is still catholic and still has mass everyday. Mainly I think she would be happy that Xavier is still standing and expanding and has the top rank in getting African Americans into medical school. I do not think she would be happy about how some of the students dress or act. I don’t think she would be happy about the fact that people do drugs right on campus. I don’t think she would be happy about the high tuiton that students have to pay. I don’t think she’ll be happy about the things we have to go through such as mildew in the dorms, and the cafeteria. I know I’m not happy about the cafeteria. I don’t think she would be happy about some of the people who got accepted into Xavier. Because some people seem like they do not belong here.

Festival Thursday, Dec 4 2008

I have never celebrated Mardi Gras because I’m from Maryland. But i do plan on celebrating in 2009. Hopefully I will enjoy this famous festival I have heard of since I was younger. The only festival I have ever attended was a Renaissance Festival in Maryland. I was young maybe about 7 or 8. I went with my brother who is like 14 years older than me. The only reason why he took me was because his girlfriend, who was working at the festival, asked him to bring me. At that time I didn’t really like my brother because he was mean but he was nice to me that day ONLY cause his girlfriend was there. So I actually enjoyed the festival. The had people dressed in Renaissance day clothes. They had a abundance of food. They had huge turkey thighs that was the size of a closed fist. They had apple pie la mode, which is apple pie with vanilla ice cream. My brother bought me both of the snacks and I really enjoyed them.  We watched the shows that went on. If I could remember they had a battle on horses. When the 2 people on the horses charge at each other and try to knock the other down. That was a nice little funny show. They also had a dunking booth. I don’t know the actually name but it when you throw the ball towards the target and the person falls into the water. They also had the torture chamber, that showed the different ways they killed people. The had magicians and gypsies all over the festival really enjoyed myself and I wish to go again some day.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Friday, Oct 24 2008

My favorit class is chemistry lab. It may be weird or ironic that that’s my favorite class because I hate science (but I want to become a doctor). I like chemistry lab because that’s the class I know for sure that I am passing as of right now. Right now in that class I have a B. And that good enough for me because I not doing so good in chemistry drill or chemistry lecture. Chemistry is just not for me, but I actually understand what I learn in chemistry lab. The teacher Mr. Lou is funny and he makes me actually want to learn what he has to teach. And he’s not even the type of funny where he tries to be funny, he’s serious majority of the time but he comes off as a funny person and I like that about him. My other favorite class is experimental psychology. The only reason why I love that class is only because I love psychology period. If it was not for my love of psychology I would not like that class whatsoever. But I mean the class is okay if was not so hard to write the papers. We do learn a lot but I kind learned so of the things from AP Statistics. And I’m the type of person who learns something (in psychology) and always remember what i learned. So I pass my tests that I take. Taking AP Statistics has helped me do good in Experimental Psychology.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Friday, Oct 24 2008

Poverty has benefited and hurt New Orleans in several different ways. Poverty has benefited New Orleans because traditions are very strong and still practiced here. People of New Orleans have a deep love for their city so they keep their traditions up and running. New Orleans is like a whole country all on it own. If there was not any poverty of much less poverty New Orleans would be just like all other cities of the United States. New Orleans would not have their unique foods, music, and styles of building. Without poverty, New Orleans may end up having more people, less styles of food, music that you can hear anywhere, there will basically be no more uniqueness in this famous well known city. The reason why so many outsiders love the city is because of its uniqueness. So if New Orleans did not have the uniqueness no one would be so eager to visit this interesting city. Now poverty has also hurt New Orleans in several ways. Because of the poverty New Orleans does not look like a safe to visit. A lot of people do not want to visit because they think they would get harmed or killed visiting a place with so much poverty. Poverty also hurt New Orleans because house properties has went down and some areas are just not how they used to be in the past. Poverty has also effected crime rates, because of all the poverty crime rates has went up. Poverty has harmed and at the same time benefited New Orleans.

Who do you think would make a great political leader and why? Friday, Oct 24 2008

I believe Barack Obama would make a great political leader. I believe that because he where he’s standing now he shows that he is more stable than John McCain could ever be. As of right now people barely hear of John McCain, all you hear about is his running mate Sarah Palin. You would think Sarah Palin is the one who is running for president. Barack Obama is showing he doesn’t need help to win. He shows he has a lot of strength and the United States of America needs a strong president. Someone who will come in and fix all the things that George Bush couldn’t fix and the things he messed up during his two terms in office. Me, being an African American, is not the factor of me thinking Barack Obama is the better political leader. Race has absolutely nothing to do with who could do a better job. It is all in the things the say, their beliefs, how they carry theirselves, and their ability to take on a big leadership in running the whole United States. I know Barack Obama has had problems in the past such as with Reverend Wright. But situations like shows how Barack Obama is, he overcame those issues and is still standing strong. His plans are straight forward and he knows the things he wants to do as soon as he gets into office. So, I hope Barack Obama does make it into office so he can straighten out all the issues than need to be fixed.

What are your professional plans and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Friday, Oct 24 2008

My professional plan has been to become a psychiatrist. This has been my professional plan since I was in the 11th grade. I alsways wanted to become a doctor ever since I was in early elementary school but I just didn’t know what kind of doctor I actually wanted to be. When I reached the 7th grade I decided I wanted to be heart surgeon, when I got to the 8th grade, i decided i wanted to be a brain surgeon. When I reached the 10th grade I came to the conclusion that I couldn’t stand the sight of blood and I was cluecless as to what I wanted to be until I took psychology in the 11th grade and fell in love with it. Xavier’s mission statement states that they want to promote a more just and humane society. And I do want to become more humane and help others with their problems. That’s my main reason for becoming a psychiatrist, other than the sight of blood, to give advice to those who really need it. So, Xavier does affect my professional plans. Xavier would help me become a better person that I need to be to deal with the different types of people I will work with and care for in the future. Xavier will help me succeed here and help me go on to medical school. I plan on being one of the top child psychiatrists in the United States, which also means I plan on being well paid.

Why I Chose Xavier Thursday, Sep 25 2008

I chose Xavier University for several different reasons. I found out about Xavier the summer after 11th grade. I was visiting New York like I do every summer. My sister and I went with her friends and the camp the run to the pool. As we were coming back my sister, her friend, and I were taking about me applying to different colleges. My original choice of college was Spelman. I had wanted to go there since I was in the 6th grade. So her friend asked me what I wanted to major in. I told her premedicine. Then she told me how she graduated from Xavier and how it was very good at helping students get into medical school. And she mentioned how it was a a catholic school and historically black. After that day I researched the school. And I feel in love with Xavier. I didn’t even applied to Spelman. Xavier was the only school in my mind but I did do on site applications for Morgan State University and University of Maryland: Eastern Shore. Those were my last resorts though. So back to talking about Xavier, another reason why I wanted to come here was because it was from home. I didn’t want to be so close to home where I can come home every weekene. Or to far where I wouldn’t be able to come when I just want to. I also wanted to go somewhere where I know at least 1 person, so I can have a house I can go to if I’m feeling a little homesick. And I knew 2 people here in New Orleans before I got here. Those are my reasons for choosing Xavier.
