Email to Fav. Teacher Sunday, Dec 6 2009

Dear Dr. Homan,

I want to thank you for making Freshman Seminar the easiest and least stressful class this semester. You are like one of the only teachers that actually understands that we receive no credit for the class, therefore we don’t have to put in much effort into getting our work done. Some of the other teachers don’t seem to get it, but you do. The work was awesome too; it was simple and fun, just like it should be for such a class. Dr. Homan, I appreciate you and I hope everybody else does. You are a wonderful teacher and I hope you don’t change…ever.

Xavier’s mission from a senior’s perspective Sunday, Dec 6 2009

I asked a Xavier senior about what he thought of Xavier’s mission and the school in general, and his answer tickled me. He said that the mission was something that only appealed to parents and students who pay little attention to details. He said “Yea of course the school is great for getting you very far in life and all that other stuff, but to be honest this isn’t even what a real college experience should be like…I’m just ready to graduate and get on with my life.” I asked him if he would go through the whole college process again with Xavier University and he said “No, this is like high school and jail mixed together.” I personally agree with him; I mean the school is great when it comes to guaranteeing a successful future but this is not a normal college so I have a bittersweet feeling about the school.

St. Katherine Drexel && Xavier Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

Honestly, I could care less about whether or not Katherine Drexel would be happy with Xavier today. I don’t know why she wouldn’t be happy though, Xavier has come a long way. It has made a great name for itself and most, I don’t know about all,  Xavier graduates have successful futures awaiting them. It is the only Catholic HBCU in the country, which sets its standards way above others. Parents love the fact that it is very structured, students love the fact that it is very welcoming. What more can Katherine Drexel ask for?

Poverty and New Orleans Monday, Oct 12 2009

I am not from New Orleans and I have only been living here for two months. I can’t really speak properly on how poverty has influenced this place so I’m just going by what I know. After hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans, the rest of the country started to pity the city and started to lend as much help as they could. I’m not sure how well that went but I do know that New Orleans is much better than it was right after it was hit by the hurricane. Just like any other poor city, people suffer and struggle to get by in life. Poverty is nothing to be proud of and even though alot of people are willing to help the poor, those people will not be around till eternity to see poverty end.

What Barack’s Father Would Think Monday, Oct 12 2009

In Barack Obama’s novel Dreams from my Father, he often mentioned his father in the memories he had of him. From what I got out of the stories, his father was a very bold man who was not afraid to speak what was on his mind. Obama didn’t talk badly about his father, he just spoke the truth from what he recalled after hearing that his father had passed away.  If his father was to read the novel, I think he would be very proud of his son. I believe Obama portrayed him as a strong and outspoken man who wasn’t about any nonsense. What father wouldn’t be proud of that image?

Fav Class at Xavier Monday, Oct 12 2009

If Freshman Seminar with Dr. Homan was actually an important class and we actually could receive credit for taking the class, it would be my favorite class. To start off with, we only meet once a week for fifty minutes. Secondly, it is a paperless class so we only participate in oral communication while in class. Last but not least, Dr. Homan is a very interesting professor with a great sense of humor and he makes the class fun. Unfortunately, we can’t receive any credits for Freshman Seminar and it doesn’t affect our GPA, so it can not be my favorite class. The only class left to consider is Intro to Psychology with Dr. Iskra. Psychology is a very fun subject with lots of twists and turns. It explains many things that happen in the world and is very interesting.  Additionally, Dr. Iskra is a very exciting professor; she is extremely goofy and youthful, which is the reason why she can understand her students more than the typical psychology prefessor.

My Leadership Skills Sunday, Oct 11 2009

When it comes to leading the way, I am always up for the challenge. I consider myself the responsible leader who is willing to take on the issues that everybody else is afraid to tackle. I may not be extremely physically strong, but I am extremely mentally fit and cannot easily be broken. There are many obstacles that human beings have to bump into everyday; the way you conquer those obstacles is what makes you strong. Along with strength, courage and knowledge help define a true leader. I am a leader in my own way because I believe I possess all the qualities that a leader should have and I am not afraid to be put on the spot. If my services are ever needed anywhere, I wouldn’t hesitate to perform to my best abilities. Even if I ever mess up, I wouldn’t hesitate to take responsibility for my mistake because that would simply make me a coward in disguise.

My Professional Plans Sunday, Oct 11 2009

My professional plans include going to graduating from college with a Bachelors Degree, possibly attending graduate school, and working as a professional in a well respected career field. At first, fashion was my passion and I always dreamt about moving out to either New York City or Los Angeles to become a famous fashion designer with lots of celebrity clients. Then I revealed that dream to my parents and they basically threw it in the nearest trashcan. All they could tell me was that fashion was not a real career but a hobby and that I needed to establish a foundation before I decided to even think about designing clothes. As much as I tried to convince them they were not changing their minds one bit. Now, I’m left with attending Xavier and going to medical school in order to become a professional in the medical field. I really don’t know how Xavier’s mission affects my plans but I do know that if I can graduate from Xavier with a high GPA, I will be the happiest person in the world.

Why I Chose Xavier Wednesday, Sep 23 2009

Choosing to attend Xavier University of Louisiana was a much easier decision for me than for other people. I first heard about the school through my cousin, who was supposed to attend the school with me but decided to bail out once he got accepted to the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. I never thought much about the school because I had never heard about it ever in my life. It seemed as though once I looked the school up, my counselors and teachers started talking more about it. I looked at that as a sign, maybe I was meant to be at Xavier afterall. In addition, Xavier was the cheapest school I got accepted into. The school is not cheap at all, but it sure beat the eighteen thousand dollar tuition at Barton College and the twenty-two thousand dollar tuition at Queens University of Charlotte. All three schools offered me scholarship money but Xavier ended up being the most affordable. To top it off, Xavier is a Historically Black College/University and also a Catholic school, which made my parents excited since we come from a huge catholic family. At the Lagniappe Orientation for freshmen, I fell in love with the school and decided that it was the one for me, at least until something better came along. So far, nothing has come along but I have a feeling I wont be at Xavier after my freshman year is complete.
