Katherine Drexel Saturday, Dec 13 2008

St. Katherine Drexel was born on November 26, 1858.  She was born in Europe but travel to the United States and eventually live there.  It was in the United States that she saw the inequality between races.  She saw that African Americans were being treated unfairly.  After she saw that minorities in America were being treated unfairly, she decided to help them out by building many schools including Xavier University.  She build these schools to help the minorities to get the same education as everyone else.  Xavier which is one of the school she built still exist to this date.

I think St. Katherine Drexel would be both happy and sad today when it comes to Xavier.  I think she would be happy because the the school is very competitive when it to education.  Xavier is consider to be one of the best school when it comes to getting students into medical schools.  I believed that she would be very proud of that.  She would also be proud because many students who graduate from Xavier are considered to be in the minority group.  She would be happy that a school that she built is serving its purpose.  However, I also think that she would be sad because some of the students that attend Xavier.  Some of the students who come to the school this year didn’t look like they even want an education.  They don’t even try in classes or do anything to pursue a career.  I think she would be sad because the school couldn’t make these students achieve something even if they wasn’t trying.

Mardi Gras Saturday, Dec 13 2008

I think Mardi Gras is one of the best holidays.  I think my favorite Mardi Gras holiday is in 1997.  This is the first time I had seen and experienced it.  I came over from Vietnam in 1995 and we move around a bit, but we settle down in Louisiana.  Then about a year later all my friends started talking about Mardi Gras and I didn’t know what they meant.  I thought it was just another english word that I didn’t understand.  However, when my friends drag me with them to see what was it all about I was so amazed.  I saw all different type of floats with different bands playing in front of them.  The floats were throwing many things and it was like a big giant party in the middle of the street.  All the people had on different kinds of makeup and people werer jumping and screaming for beads to be thrown at them.  At first I was just watching because it was the first time that I saw something like this, but my friends started telling me to run with the floats that throwing out the most stuff.  I caught so many beads that day that I couldn’t carried all of it by the end of the parade.  It was a real fun event and from that day on I always look forward to Mardi Gras.  However after Katrina, it wasn’t as fun as it use to be.  There are less floats then usual and all the floats didn’t throw as much stuff as it use to.  However, I still think that Mardi Gras is one of the best holidays.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Friday, Oct 24 2008

I think New Orleans wouldn’t what it be like today if it wasn’t for poverty.  First, we wouldn’t be called the big easy.  Everyone usually approaches his or her everyday life with laziness.  I guess poverty also gave us our culture that we have today.  However, poverty has done for bad than good for New Orleans.  Our high crime rate is cause by poverty.  Many people didn’t want to come back to New Orleans after the storm because of crime.  Most people in the city doesn’t have a lot of money and this causes them to commit crimes.   Also, our education system isn’t that great either.  Since the city doesn’t have a lot of money to support schools,  education is a downfall because of this.  Crime will began to happen because some people doesn’t received a good education.  Poverty usually lead to these two things.  Plus, when something bad happen to the city the government isn’t concern as much with our city than other major city.  Take Katrina for example, the government didn’t arrive to lend a helping hand until the city was basically under water.  Housing is difficult to sell as well because of poverty.  Since most people live in apartments and make low incomes, the can’t afford to buy a house.  This cause banks to go bankrupt because they are not making any money.  This lead to the city money problems.  Therefore, I think poverty has hurt us more than benefiting us.

Who do you think would make a great political leader? Thursday, Oct 23 2008

I think both candidates have weaknesses, but I believe that America need a change so Obama would be best. I also like Obama because of the way he wants to fix the educational system, and I agree with everything he say for this topic during the debates. First, I do believe that teachers need a higher salaries. Some people who would make a good teacher would be discourage to do so because of the income they will make. The drive to teach students can only go so far if the income isn’t there for the teachers to support their own family. Second, i do think college cost way too much to go to. We are basically paying for a house bill when we don’t even own one yet. That is just ridiculous. The government should give students more money if they wishes us to be able to go to college and build a future for America. Even though i like Obama ideas about the educational system, I don’t think he was strong when he talks about our economy. I didn’t understand what he was talking about during the debate about how to better our economy. I don’t think people who have high income should be more taxes than people who makes less money than them. It is not right to punish someone just because they are successful. So i think everyone should pay the same amount of taxes. I also didn’t know how Obama got the 95% either. I think Obama would make a better President because McCain ways is almost like George Bush and we need a change.

What is your favorite class at Xavier? Thursday, Oct 23 2008

I think math would be my favorite class.  Now most people would say why math because almost everyone I know hate math.  People alway complain about math because it is hard and it makes you want to think outside of the box.  But I like figuring out complex problems.  I like stuff where you have to actually sit down and think of a way to solve the problem.  That is why math fit this hobby of mine.  Plus, my grades in the class also help me like it even more.  I am beginning to think about changing my major because of this.  My math grades are better than my chemistry grades.  Therefore, I might change my major to engineer.  I haven’t decided on what kind of engineering yet though.  But because of my grades, I believe I should focus on something that is math related.  I also like math class because of my teacher.  Dr. Kocic is a very good teacher.  Calculus becomes very easy through his teaching methods.  He makes it very easy to understand how to do each problem.  On top of that he can be very funny at times.  I also like how he gives us bonus points everytime his phone goes off.  However, if our phones goes off we would have a pop quiz.  He is very fair and that is another trait that i like about him.  Math have always been my best subject so it isn’t a surprise that would be my favorite subject.

What are your professional plans and how does Xavier’s Mission affect that? Sunday, Oct 19 2008

Xavier is a school where every students will be given everything they need to accomplish their goal.  I think Xavier will help me become a researcher in pharmacy.  Xavier have always been one of the best school in putting undergraduates into pharmacy school.  I can see why it have that title while I am here at the school.  All of the professors are experienced in the field, so we are basically learning from a professional.  Also, I like the way Xavier provides us with all the notes we need in order to understand what we are doing unlike the other colleges.  My friends from other colleges tell me how hard it is to take the right notes to be able to pass a test.  Therefore, they can be missing important information in their notes.  That is why I like the way Xavier provides all the information a student will need.  Even with all the notes, chemistry still prove to be challenging, so I can’t imagine trying to take the course without it.  Xavier also keeps up with the students grades in each class, and have all kind of tutoring center to help students in every subjects.  Xavier is a place where no students will be left behind.  I appreciate the school hard work of trying to get every students to accomplish his or her goals.  Xavier not only help students make good grades but also make them become leaders.  With all of Xavier help, I believe that I will become a successful researcher one day.

Why i chose Xavier Tuesday, Oct 14 2008

To tell the truth I didn’t know where I was going to go for college. During my last couple months of school, a couple of my friends were talking about going to Xavier. That was when I got the idea of going to Xavier. I did wanted to pursue the career of a pharmacist. I wanted to rid the world from the sickness of cancer. During my last year of high school, my aunt was found to have cancer in her lung. It was the most horrible thing that I have heard and was so stroke by it. It was then that I decided to come to Xavier because it was the best pharmacy school in Louisiana. That was the main reason why I wanted to come to Xavier. I also like the idea of coming here because I live in the Westbank, and the school was very near. I couldn’t afford to go to an outer state college because I wouldn’t be able to come up with the income. I also wouldn’t be able to leave my family knowing that my aunt is sick. I also like the fact that some of my friends were also going to Xavier. A very close friend of mine also happen to attend her, and I grew up with her ever since 4th grade. Xavier staff was another reason why I like Xavier. I didn’t wanted to go to a school where I wouldn’t be able to know a teacher other than his or her name. The fact that Xavier’s Professor will take time out of there life to help each student is incredible. These are the many reasons on why I have decided to come to Xavier.
