Do some research on Katherine Drexel. Do you think she would be happy with Xavier today? Why or why not? Tuesday, Dec 14 2010

Katherine Drexel was an educator and an American nun. She supported African American education along with other minority education.  One of her largest contributions to minorities was the Sisters of Blessed Sacrament. The Sisters of Blessed Sacrament’s motive was to bring attention to racial injustice and teach the word among people everywhere. She focused on the needs of minorities and underprivileged groups in the southern and the western parts of the United States. Saint Katherine Drexel paid for over sixty schools around the nation and is the founder of this lovely school, Xavier University of Louisiana.

If Saint Katherine Drexel were alive today and saw Xavier’s progression over the years I believe that she would be proud. All of the things that Xavier University has been recognized for would make her happy. I think that she would be especially proud about how Xavier University of Louisiana bounced back from Hurricaine Katrina.

What type of leadership skills does Paul Farmer possess? What type of leadership skills do you possess? Tuesday, Dec 14 2010

Paul Farmer possesses some great leadership skills. He is determined, generous, focused, he does not discriminate, etc. He showed his patients how to care for themselves and maintain a healthy life. he also took the time to get to know his patients and their beliefs/backgrounds in order to understand the proper way to treat them without coming off offensive. Farmer cared for everyone whether or not they were able to pay for his services.

The leadership skills that I possess are listening, planning, generosity, understanding, etc. I am a quiet person but when the time arises for me to handle something from a leader’s standpoint I will step up to the plate and try to fulfill my duties to the best of my ability.

Is Paul Farmer a good role model? Who is your role model and why? Tuesday, Dec 14 2010

Paul Farmer was a great role model. He was a very generous person and went out of his way to help others despite his circumstances. He even left his family at home in order to go help the needy in Haiti. His dedication to his patients and their health is inspiring. Farmer does not discriminate against people who do not have the money in order to pay for the health services provided to them. he gives all patients the same respect and care no matter the circumstances, rich or poor.

My role model is my dad. He always pushes me to do my best and encourages me to do what I love. He has dealt with many set backs over the years and still managed to rebound and provide for his family no matter what it took. His strength, faith, and determination is what drives me to try and be as successful as him. I love my dad.

What role does money play in Farmer’s quest to provide health care? Monday, Dec 13 2010

Money plays an extremely large role in Farmer’s quest to provide health care.  Caring for anyone let alone more than one person can become expensive depending on the severity of their illness. Money was already scarce for Farmer since he had started from scratch in Cange. Also, money was scarce in Cange due to the slim availability of resources let alone jobs. Since the people in Cange did not know much about the diseases that were there, this would also become an issue. If someone ignored their symptoms and let themselves get worse before going to see Farmer, the equipment and medication that he would need in order to help them would cost more.

Why I chose to come to Xavier. Monday, Oct 18 2010

The first time that I heard of Xavier was from my Dermatologist, Dr. Carouthers. It was my junior year and I was there for my check up. We got to talking about colleges and what I was looking for education wise.  I had explained to him that I wanted to go to school with a major in Biology/Pre-Medicine. I also wanted the school to be somewhere in the south so that I could be closer to my family. Only my parents and one of my brothers live in Kansas City. The majority of my family lives in Louisiana and Texas. I rarely get to come visit my family unless it’s a funeral due to money, so being at school in the south would be nice. I would get to see my family a lot more. He had brought up a school named Xavier. He told me that it was located in New Orleans and that it was a great pre-medicine school. He said that it was known for preparing students for medical school and that it was a Historical Black College/University. He has friends who have graduated from Xavier, gone off to medical school, and become well trained doctors. All of this interested me. I wound up researching Xavier later on that day and everything that I came across only interested me more. Xavier University automatically became my first choice for college. Although the price for tuition was high, my choice never changed. I had a battle of which school I would dedicate to due to money issues at home. It was a toss up between Xavier University of Louisiana and University of Missouri – Kansas City. UMKC is right down the street from my house so it wasnt in my best interest to go there. At first, I was going to go to UMKC for a year or two and then transfer down to Xavier. But at the last minute, my parents gave in and let me go to the school that I truly wanted to go to. Im glad they changed their minds. I love it here, although the school and curriculum is something that I have to get used to. Hopefully I’ll graduate from this school. That is my goal.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Monday, Oct 18 2010

My favorite class at Xavier University would have to be my Chemistry Lab class. Although chemistry is not my best subject, I have always liked to do scientific experiments. I have never taken chemistry before. I only took Into to Physical Science, General Biology, and Anatomy & Physiology one and two. It has taken me a while to get used to the curriculum here as well as how the classes are run. My teacher is pretty cool. She is serious when it comes to the course work but every now and then she loosens up and cracks jokes. My lab partner is really cool as well. She is easy to work with. My favorite experiment so far was the titration experiment. It was not easy to understand at first because the directions where a little bit confusing but my partner Jasmine and I wound up figuring things out. I like seeing how chemicals react with each other in certain situations. Although I am still struggling with certain aspects of chemistry. I like that subject. I know for sure that I still need to work on memorizing and understanding nomenclature. I also need to memorize certain formulas. I am starting to get better at them as each week progresses. Hopefully I will understand things more as the year goes on. I think that this class will always be my favorite class because I get to use chemicals and I get to cause chemical reactions. All of those things are interesting to me, seeing color changes, causing odors, or causing physical changes like turning a liquid into a solid. Although I like chemistry, my favorite science subject is anatomy and physiology. I have not taken that course here at Xavier University yet but I will be looking forward to taking that class or something similar to it in the future.
