In the book Dreams From My Father, by Barack Obama, he mentions his life struggles and the effects that his father’s absence had on him. I think that Barack Obama’s father would feel a great deal of guilt because of the pain he has inflicted on his son. On the contrary, I think that his father would be elated to know that he took part in creating such an amazing individual. He would smile thinking of his son’s accomplishments and the astonishing man he turned out to be. A man who’s intelligent, as his father was, and man who adores people in addition to his own family. AN AMAZING MAN HE IS!
My Favorite Class Monday, Oct 12 2009
Week Five 8:08 pm
My favorite class at Xavier is Painting. Painting has always been a hobby of mine, even though I’m not that great at it. For me, it balances out all of the Chemistry and Biology mess that fills my head. During class, I try my hardest to relax and think about absolutely nothing because I know that it’s probably the only point in the day until night time that I can do so. Painting makes me tranquil and happy at the same time. It also stirs up a lot of emotion because one of my closest friends that passed shared an art class with me and we always did art to tell a story and see if the other person could figure out what it was. So now, I always incorporate something that’s going on in my life into my paintings which allows me to vent. That hour and forty minutes I have of peace is, on most days, the highlight of my day.
Poverty in New Orleans Monday, Oct 12 2009
Week Four 8:06 pm
I think New Orleans has benefited by poverty because the city has gained the interest of a lot of people who want to help. People that never thought of New Orleans before are now interested mainly because of Katrina, which to me accounts for a large amount of the poverty to begin with. People lost everything in the storm, without places to live even, which made the percentage of “poor people” rise. People from everywhere are trying to do what they can for New Orleans. Poverty has also hurt New Orleans a great deal. I believe that poverty is one of the biggest reasons why the murder rate was so high. When children don’t get the proper education to have successful lives because the city is too poor to pay for it, they become adults that don’t have jobs and don’t have money. When all of those people are put together, they all chase the same thing; money, however they can get it, which, in turn causes conflict. In order to cut the competition, those people kill each other to ensure their survival. All the crime in this city on top of the homeless people makes New Orleans an undesirable place to live, bringing the population down, which is also an effect that poverty has on New Orleans. Aside from the negativity, New Orleans has great history and culture that keeps it alive!
My Leadership Skills Monday, Oct 12 2009
Week Three 8:04 pm
I have always been told that I am an awesome leader and now that I’m older I’ve figured out why. When I was younger, out of my group of friends I was always that one that everyone followed (it was very annoying). In my opinion what makes me a great leader is that I’m confident in the decisions I make. Leadership is dependent on confidence because your confidence inspires the best efforts from your team! If president Obama wasn’t sure of his decision would we agree with them? No. We agree because we trust that he has our best interest at hand. Anytime I’m put into a group, inside of school or not, I always make sure that what I do benefits the group and not just myself. I can be trusted and I am an honest person, for the most part. I am a very organized and responsible individual which is probably one of the most important qualities a leader should posses. Being enthusiastic about whatever you’re leading is also important. If you don’t care how are people going to trust that you’re doing your very best?
Professional Plans and Xavier’s Mission Monday, Oct 12 2009
Week Two 8:03 pm
My professional plan is to become an Obstetrician/Gynecologist. I want to work at the hospital where I was born in Beverly Hills, California; Cedars Sinai. I also want to open a clinic for women who are less fortunate and can’t afford health insurance. This would be a place where they can maintain the health of their female organs by getting regular check- ups and treatments for issues they already have. Xavier’s mission is to prepare its students to contribute to the building of a more humane society by making them leaders and servers of their communities. This mission has a direct effect on my career goals. My mission is to help those that I can and share some of my knowledge with those who weren’t as fortunate as I am to further their education. My ideal community service would be to educate women about their bodies and how to maintain the health of their bodies. Xavier contributes to this by offering the education I need to do so.
Why I Chose Xavier Monday, Oct 12 2009
Week One 8:01 pm
I chose to attend Xavier for the same reason almost every Pre-Med did; because Xavier is number one in the nation for putting African- Americans in medical school. Being an Ob/Gyn has always been a dream of mine and being as though I am a strong believer in following your dreams and aspirations, I followed mine which led me here. In addition, my parents thought it would be an awesome experience for me based off of what they knew of New Orleans, such as the strong culture. At first, I wasn’t so sure about it. I knew I wanted to leave home but not this far away! Home for me is Los Angeles, California and I would’ve never imagined I would go to school in the south. I was devastated when I got off the airplane and into the taxi by how different it looks from LA and most importantly; the HEAT! Although I’m not so fond of the city, I don’t regret my decision to attend Xavier. Xavier provides you with countless resources to put you on a path for success and prepares you for the professional world with awesome academics!
