letter to teacher… Tuesday, Dec 8 2009

Hello,

This is Tanisha Garrett. I just wanted to let you know that you are the best math teacher that I have ever had. You have made math seem so easy to me now. I wish that there were more teachers like you in every subject, because then school would be so easy. You create a relaxed learning enviroment, and make math seem so simple. I couldn’t have asked for a better 8 am class. I was so happy when I saw that you taught pre-cal, because I know im not that strong in math, but with a teacher that cares it will be okay…lol. You have done a great job this semester* Thank you…..

Xavier senior.. Tuesday, Dec 8 2009

I interviewed Jasmine from our class, and she said the exact same thing I thought about the mission statement. She told me how when she first came to Xavier she was majoring in pharmacy, but she switched over to be a chem major. I thought that was funny, because I am here and I’m majoring in pharmacy. I dont want switch though. Well…not at the moment. She told me that the mission statement, to her, meant that no matter what kind of degree you walk away with you need to give back to your community in some way. You should never just do something for yourself. I really felt where she was coming from and I can honestly say that, that is what I plan to do with my degree from Xavier. I will give back to my community.

I think she would be very happy with Xavier today. Xavier is number 1 when it comes to placing African Americans into medical schools, and that was her dream. She wanted universal education. she was very focused on the education of Native Americans and African Americans. She financed more than 60 missions and schools around the United States. From what I have read about her she was a very good person. She was taught from a young age to give back to the community in some kind of way. I am very happy that she choose the road that she did, because if she hadnt Xavier wouldnt be here today.

What are your professional plans, and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Monday, Dec 7 2009

After I graduate from Xavier University in 2015, I plan to quickly get started in my profession. I am a chemistry pre-pharmacy major, and I plan to use my doctrine to help others. I want to start a program for teens. the program will help the teens with personal problems, help them gain friendships, and help them academically. I will do this program on side of pharmacy. Xavier University’s mission is about giving back to the community, and that’s exactly what I plan to do with my future.

Why did you choose to come to Xavier? Monday, Dec 7 2009

HA! Most of my friends have asked me the same thing. The truth is, everything just sort of fell in place.  I’m from Baton Rouge,Louisiana, and I  attended Scotlandvill Magnet Highschool. Baton Rouge holds everything I love about life within its borders, but I had to leave. My friends are the best! We are always going out, or just simply hanging out at my house. The fun never ends, and that’s why the work never gets started.&& That’s why I had the get the heck out of Baton Rouge if I ever planned on doing anything with my life. Xavier is well known for its medical program, and that played a role in my decision making. Also, Xavier isn’t too far from home, but it isn’t that close either. I love the balance.

what type of leadership skills do you possess? Monday, Dec 7 2009

I would have to say that I possess the most important leadership skill of them all: LISTENING! I might not have the answer to every problem in the world, but I can listen to what needs to be done, and find the right person for the job. Listening is the most important skill of leadership. Also, another leadership skill I possess is: MOTIVATION. I can make the weakest person feel strong, or the most doubtful person feel sure of themselves. How does someone expect to lead a group of people, when they are unsure of what they are capable of? A great leader can motivate their group, because you are only as strong as your weakest link.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has poverty hurt New Orleans? Monday, Dec 7 2009

I personally don’t understand how poverty can benefit anyone. Im my eyes poverty only causes damage. Poverty in New Orleans hurts my eyes. People label New Orleans with words like “dirty” and “ghetto“, because of the poverty here. I have heard many of my peers say “After I get my degree I am moving out of New Orleans. It’s too dirty here!” Others have stated “I would stay here, but the Big Bucks are not here!”  I feel that poverty has really slandered the city of New Orleans. Yes, there are people who are poor here, but there are poor people everywhere. Some food for thoughtwhen you have less, you tend to value things more.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Monday, Dec 7 2009

When I saw that I had scored 1 point less of what I needed to take pre-cal, I was very upset. That meant I had to enroll into Prepreration for College Math. I didnt show my friends my schedule, because they were all in pre-cal. My first day in my math class I sat in the front. I knew math wasn’t my strongest subject, and I was prepared to come face-to-face with my weakness. As the first two weeks rolled by, I found myself  looking forward to understanding a problem that I would have ignored on a test before. All the things I found difficult are now making sense. My teacher is amazing. My favorite class is math[never thought I would say that], because now I finally get it.

What would Father Think of Book Friday, Dec 4 2009

I feel his father would be very proud of him. Barack’s father stressed education to him as a young boy. Barack took his father’s advice, and achieved great things academically. He went to college, and he graduated. That is starting to become rare these days. No matter what he had been through, Barack kept his schoolwork first. I know it makes my mother feel good when I follow her advice. Now, if Barack’s father read the book, I think he would learn somethings about him that he might not have been shown if he were still living. Our parents stand behind us 100%. No matter what accomplishment, or mistakes, we make they are right there with us. Barack’s father would have loved his book.
