Who is the individual your group picked? Why did you pick this individual? Sunday, Feb 6 2011

For our service learning project, my group and I chose to research on Ernie and Antoinette K- Doe.  There is very little we knew about the K-Does while choosing them but now we are eager to learn about them.  This is project is something new for me and I can’t wait to get started on it.  We have done a little research and found out that he was born in New Orleans and he has a music background which we can learn a lot from.  I haven’t researched much about them yet but can’t wait to gather information about them.  I want to learn about their lifestyle and their achievements.  Whats makes them different among others?

Describe a memorable funeral that you have attended. How did this make you reflect on your own place in this world. Saturday, Feb 5 2011

The most memorable funeral for me was my grandfather’s.  I lost a true role model with a good friend.  He was just like a buddy to me.  We enjoyed doing a lot things together which leaves a lot memories of him.  I couldn’t believe my eyes when he was passing away right in front of  us.  Everything seemed like it stopped; my mind was blanked out.  I lived a care free life up until my grandfather’s funeral.  I realized how death is caught off guard.  It can occur to me anytime.  I had a habit of doing a a lot bad things in life but then I decided to change.  My grandfather’s funeral made a better person of me.  I let go of the sins I was making.  I started to take my life more seriously and not taking it for granted.  My grandfather’s funeral was a very tragic for me but it has made awareness of my wrong deeds.

What are your thoughts about Xavier and its mission after your first semester? Week 13 Friday, Dec 3 2010

After the first semester at Xavier University, I kind of know that I am on the rite path.  I like the learning enviroment here.  Professors here are so helpfull.  My first semester didn’t go as well as I planned but now I am understanding better.  I think staying at Xavier can help me get into Med school.  Staff over here are very encouraging to you; they will take there time off to help you understand materials you don’t understand in class.  Xavier has a good mission statement.  They are helping us students to be a better leader in future.  They are doing so by helping us do volunteer work .  Most of the staff here believe strongly into Xavier mission.  Xavier is a good university for people who want to be pharmacist.  There is a good program here for pre pharmacy.   Xavier helps us become good students with leadearship abilities.  They have a passion to help students make their future safe.

Favorite teacher at Xavier Friday, Dec 3 2010

Dr. Kelly,

I appreciate all your hard work and encouraging me that I can do it,  You have been very helpful outside the class.  Whenever I needed help on the coursework you would help outside your office hours.  You are a nice teacher who doesn’t get bothered with helping as many students as once.  I have realized that I can make it through college become what I want after hearing your personal story.  You are a great encouragement to students.  You have helped me a lot through my homeworks.  Your labs were fun also when now an then you would crack a joke in the class.  Thank You for being a good lab teacher and hopefully I will take another lab with you next semester.

Interview a Xavier senior about his/her thoughts on Xavier mission and blog out what they have to say. Friday, Dec 3 2010

I interviewed a Xavier graduate.  He was a senior in Xavier last year.  His responses gave me a better understanding of Xavier mission statement.  He said that Xavier helps students be a good leader.  It prepared him to help in community service.  Xavier promotes taking part in volunteer.  It has changed his life because he believes he is more confident and experienced.  He believed that students Xavier and its faculty have a great respect for its mission statement.  He believes Xavier mission statement has helped him become a more confident person in the field he is working at.

Do some research on Katherine Drexel. Do you think she will be happy with Xavier today? Why or Why not? Friday, Dec 3 2010

Katherine Drexel was born in Philadelphia.  She is from a wealthy family.  Drexel dedicated her life and money to help Native Americans and African Americans who were in need. She became the second canonized American born saint.  During her life she opened 60 schools west and South west of United States.  She founded Xavier University in 1925; its and Afro American Catholic institution of higher learning in the United States.  She inspired people to give without ever looking for a reward.  She opened a home for African American children at St. Michel; her aim was to help the poor and educate people.  Today she would have been very proud of Xavier University.  Xavier is ranked number one for placing African Americans into Medical schools.  Xavier also has a great pharmacy program.  She would have been very happy with the faculty here.  They are very helpful and welcoming to any race.  Drexel hated racialism.  I believe her  she has helped a lot people change their lives.  If today she was hereL she would have been proud of Xavier.

What role does money play in Farmer’s quest to provide health care? Friday, Dec 3 2010

Money was not personally a issue for Paul Farmer.  He put care of needy before his salary.  He helps children and poor to get treated for free.  Farmer had donated his paycheck to a patient with aids.  Farmer had great plans to do in haiti like build in some health clinics but money did get an a little issue there.  Farmer also attracted in some donations from Tom White.  Tom White is a wealthy man who donates a lot to needy people.  White had helped Farmer rebuild Haiti.  Paul Farmer personally is not greedy for money.  He had given many opportunities that had cam in his way, but since he has a kind heart he chose to help the one who were in need.  Paul Farmer had done various things like having Farmer Organization so people can help him built schools or clinics.  It was hard for him to do everything by himself specially when he was charging needy patients a little or no cost for health care.  Farmer had done a lot from very little that he had.  He was very passionate.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Friday, Dec 3 2010

My favorite class at Xavier is Chemistry 1010 and its lab.  I love chemistry since I am a chem pre med major.  I have a nice teacher who is very clear when she teaches.  I never get bored in that class even though it is one and a half hour long.  The class was hard at first specially the first few modules than I got the hang of it.  I understood better how to prepare myself for the next drill.  I also liked how we  can take our quizzes in drill every once a week.. This is very easier than other classes where quiz dates can be on various days through out the week.  In Chemistry I now every thursday I have a quiz and its nice when we can reinforce our missed points on the quiz.  This really helps because each point counts.  I also love the Chemistry class because the notes for module are always online so even I miss a lecture by any chance than I don’ fall behind.  The package deal with chemistry is its lab which is very fun.  I like going in there every once a week and try learning new experiments.  It gives me a better understanding of chemistry.  Chemistry is just my favorite subject even though I am just an average student in this subject.

Has poverty benefited Haiti and New Orleans? How has it hurt Haiti and New Orleans? Do you believe in the preferential option for the poor? Friday, Dec 3 2010

Poverty probably has benefited Haiti and New Orleans to an extent, but poverty isn’t a positive impact to look on.  Poverty does get attention and people in need get help.  People can get better health care and help from nice people like Paul Farmer for a little or no cost.  Poverty helps to bring a good side of human.  People help each other out and makes different cultures come together.  Poverty also hurts a lot.  Your economy goes down and standard of living drops.  People find it hard to feed themselves and their family.  Businesses are not running well and less healthcare systems can be an issue.

I believe preferential option for poor is necessary.  Some are not as lucky as a healthy person because they probably can’t work due to their illness.  Economy of a country can force individuals to be less financially fit.  If poor has ability to work and is taking advantage for nurturance than its wrong but other than that if someone is helpless than no doubt we should help.
