A Senior’s View On Xavier’s Mission Thursday, Dec 3 2009

When I questioned a senior on her thought about the mission statement here at Xavier, her reply was rather short and straight to the point.  She said the mission suits Xavier as well as other HBCU’S.  I’m not to sure what that means but i’m guessing that she likes the mission and believes it is what a typical HBC would have as their mission.  But the fact is that it is a black school and things are not going to always fall into place.  This school can not always prepare students for a just and humane society because it is always going to be something that is missing and someone who just will not get it.  She says over all the mission itself has good morals but it is just that when it comes to breaking it down word for word it has its negatives

Email to my Teacher Thursday, Dec 3 2009

Hello Dr. Jones

Now that the semester is over I think I should let you know how much I’ve appreaciated you and your class.  I have to be honest, I was a little skeptical in the4 beginning because I was told that you don’t give “a’s” and second was because of the cursing you was doin in the beginning of the year.  I was not use to that but I see it worked out fine.  You made things so simple to figure out and you made the class so comfortable to be in.  I’m not to sure if it was just the course or the the teacher but I loved your class.  Of all my teachers I have to say you were my favorite.  I loved the attitude and energy you had for the class.  I soon learned that it wasn’t that you don’t give “a’s” it’s just that you really make us work for them.  It was a little aggraving in the beginning of the year to have points taken off for any simple mistake but it all it did was teach me to try harder and be better so I won’t “kill my patient” as you say.  Well I will miss your teaching next semester and I will try to remember all the things you taught me.

                                                                                                                                                       Your Student,

Katharine Drexel Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

Katharine Drexel was a woman who believed that Native Americans as well as African-Americans to have an equal chance just as well as whites did.  She believed that they had a chance in receiving an education as well as being able to see God’s fulfillment.  By establishing Xavier as a school first for high school students with it eventually turning into a University.  I believe she would be happy and not so satisfied with the was Xavier is today.  This is still a school where blacks get a opportuinity to learn but there are not so many Native Americans.  It is still a school with religious views but everyone who attends here are not catholic or even go to church for that matter.  Some things done here are not ver religious at all i.e BET coming here and having a chance to encourage some students to not even attend class.  The school still tries its best to teach good morals like having the M.A.X program which is basically a community service program and by having speakers come here and speak to us, but in all reality the school is not how it was when it first opened.  That was such a long time ago, and things always change over time, it will always have its qualities that are the same as the past but as of today the standards are not the same and Katharine Drexel would probably not be happy with that.

What would Barack Obama’s father think of the book? Friday, Oct 9 2009

I believe his father would be proud of him in the long run but I think it would take time for him to get use to because he talks the truth on how his father wasn’t in his life and like any person, we don’t like to see the truth about certain things.  Barack’s father would  be happy but he wouldn’t be happy right off the bat it would take some time, he would have to realize that his son is right and that he wasn’t in his son life like he should have been.  It is parts of the book that he would probably want to change or tell it in a different way, a way that wouldn’t make him (Barack’s father) look so bad.  He would be happy to know that Barack was able to put that behind him and move along with his life and become a successful man.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Thursday, Sep 24 2009

My favorite class here is my pre calculus class.  Even though it can be a little difficult at times I just love the energy in the class well the energy the teacher has actually.  My teacher name is Dr. Jones and he is hilarious, and although i’m not too fond of him cussing it helps get his point across.  He helps out so much and even though his quizzes come by a little difficult I love how what he says is on the quiz is on the quiz and the same goes for the test he gives.  It’s a class I never get bored in no matter how sleepy I am.  He keeps my attention throughout the whole class,  it’s one of those classes I can sit in all day and pay attention in all day.  He’s such a comfortable teacher to have, like some teachers make you not want to ask them questions because they explain it again to you and keep going, but he explains it agian and tries his best to make sure you understand what you are doing.  I just enjoy that class or at least that teacher so much, i wish that I could actually have him again for my calculus class.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Thursday, Sep 24 2009

Poverty has help New Orleans because it’s getting more attention.  People now realize the significance in New Orleans and how it is very vulnerable when Hurricane season comes around.  With New Orleans being in poverty it makes it easier for people feel bad for it,  the whole United States focus went towards New Orleans which meant that New Orleans got a lot of money donated to it, not being form here I can’t really tell where the money went, but I am aware that poverty helped New Orleans more important than the significance it already had.  Poverty hurting New Orleans make it seem like New Orleans needs help all the time now, like they can’t handle their own.  It  makes it seem like they are a city in need of charity.  I’m sure New Orleans can do good by its self but now with the city being in a state of poverty it just looks like New Orleans is always looking for a donation.

What type of leadership skills do you posess? Friday, Sep 11 2009

What type of leadership skills I posess???…hmmm that’s a good question.  It depends I guess, I’m good with getting things started and organizing things.  I never held a position in high school though.  Our positions were based off popularity so if you wasn’t popular you didn’t really have a chance in holding any kind of position.  Being part of a club was different though, you voted in the club so I held positions in clubs and I was very good at that if something needed to be done I got it done and if we needed to organize for an event I was very good in making sure things went right.  Another skill of mines not based on holding positions was making an impact on someone.  Getting people to become comfortable in their new environment and getting to know others and putting people together to make new friends is a very good  skill of mines.  I can make something out of a nothing situation and make it memorable.  So the leadership skills I posses vary.

What are your professional plans and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Thursday, Sep 10 2009

My professional plans are to become a great African American Female Neuro surgeon.  I want to one day be the one who makes that difference in separating twins or removing that tumor off someone’s head, or even telling someone how or why they are having so many headaches.  The brain is the most important and complex part to me on the body and I want to be one of those people who makes a difference in it.  Xavier’s mission affects that because it states how it will “prepare students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society”.  I feel like that says it will help prepare me for the worst and for the best.  This school will take the person I am now and make me into  a better person in which I will need to be later.  Later on in life I know I will come across pathways in which I will need to be able to speak properly and articulate my thoughts properly and the mission says that our “preparation takes place in a diverse learning and teaching environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including research and community service”.  I fell that once i graduate from Xavier I will be able to think intellectually and be well prepared for my next step to medical school.

Why did I choose Xavier Thursday, Sep 10 2009

It all started a long time ago when I was in the tenth grade.  Like all girls I was going through a phase, well something bad happened and every time something bad happens the punishment is to read a book.  This time my punishment was to go to work with my mama and read a book, this was all over the summer though.  I have a god-mother who works at LSUS and is like over the English Department, well she gave my mama a book called Think Bigby Ben Carson.  Ben Carson is like a famous African American Neuro Surgeon.  So that was the book I was forced to read, and in reality I really don’t like forceful reading, on top of that I had other books I had to read over the summer for school, I never really read them though.  Well as i got into reading the book I found it quite intersting  and in a way the book actually touched me and made me a  little sentimental.  So after that my dream was to become a neuro surgeon and I think he mentioned the school in it i’m not to sure, but I have a sister named Candyce and after I told her about it i remember her saying how the school is very helpful when it comes down to medical school so I did my research and liked it and from then on I knew I was Xavier bound.
