Email to my favorite teacher Sunday, Dec 6 2009

Dear Dr. Lanoue,

Now that the semester has come to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for being such an enthusiastic and compelling teacher.  Although I am a biology/premed major, english is my favorite subject.  I enjoyed analyzing literature using critical theories that I did not knew existed before taking your class.  I have been able to develop a whole new appreciation for writing.  Also, in high school writing a four page paper seemed like a lot of work but because of your class I feel I have greatly improved my writing skills.  Thank you again and Happy Holidays!

What would Obama’s father think of the book? Sunday, Dec 6 2009

I think that Obama’s father would be proud of his son’s book but also have some reservations about it.  First of all the fact that his son wrote a book at all is a great accomplishment.  However, the way that his father is depicted in the story is not like that of a perfect father figure.  In fact, Obama’s father was never really around and I think that he would feel bad that he did not spend more time with his son.  On various occasions, Barack shows that he is in great need of a father figure and his dad would have regretted not being there as much for his son.

Katherine Drexel Sunday, Dec 6 2009

Katherine Drexel dedicated her life to helping Native Americans and Blacks.  She spent countless amounts of money trying to better the lives of the less fortunate.  She financed more than 60 educational missions around the country.  She established the religious order called the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament.  Because of her religious and social dedication, Pope John Paul II canonized her making her only the second American-born saint.

What is my favorite class and why? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

My favorite class is World Civilizations.  Of course, I’ve always wanted to be a doctor but history has always been a huge topic of interest for me.  I enjoy learning about where I came from and how society became what it is today. I believe that we cannot know where we are going unless we know where we have been.  The modern world was not created over night and I feel that it is essential for everyone to know how the present came to be.  If it were possible for me to become a doctor and be a history major I would.  Without knowing about history I believe that a person is not complete.  Many students my age say “why do I need to learn about something that already happened?”  My answer to that would be wouldnt you want people in future generations to know about the accomplishment of our time?  People in the past did not make advances and contribute to society to be ignored.

What leadership skills do I possess? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I am a very driven person and I feel that I am able to use my own drive as an example to help others. Often when people see someone who has achieved what they wish to achieve they feel inspired to be the best that they can be to reach their goals as well. My drive and determination makes me a good leader because these characteristics are ones that people admire in a leader. In addition, I believe that I am a compassionate person. If someone is having a hard time I always do my best to make them feel better or help them through their situation. I am a good listener and a good friend. These characteristics also help me to be a good leader because if you are unable to listen to people then it will be impossible for them to relate to you. People do not appreciate leaders that they cannot relate to and in turn they tend to rebel against such a leader.

How will Xavier’s mission help you in the future? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

In the future I plan to become a successful doctor specializing in either anesthesiology or pediatrics. Xavier University is known and highly commended for their premed programs and prides itself on being the number one university in the country for placing African-Americans into medical schools. As a young African-American woman I think that it is crucial for African-Americans to become successful members of society. Xavier’s mission statement says that they are dedicated to producing adults who wish to promote a more juste society. This means that if I want to become a doctor and help society in any way possible, this university is the key to being on my way.

Why did I choose Xavier? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

Xavier University was my first choice for college. Although I got in to every university I applied to Xavier stood out to me. Their dedication to the success of their students amazed me and I wanted to be apart of their legacy. Xavier is highly recommended for their premed program and becoming a successful doctor has been my dream since birth. I felt that Xavier would be a supportive environment for me and their small class sizes would allow me to have a better relationship with my professors. No one in my family nor anyone I know has ever attended Xavier so I looked forward to starting a journey that was all my own.
