Dear Professor Mohhamed,

I have enjoyed your theology course tremendously. You have taught me what it is to orient myself to my community and to a cause. As a Public Relations major I initially thought my career would entail me to be unethical in my advances because it calls for me to polish up a person’s image. But after analyzing theological liberation, I can now focus my PR career in raising awareness at the unjust measures in the world and work with other professionals to correct those discrepancies or make them better Thanks once again for your profound insight on the world and allowing me to see the world in a different light.

Interview a Xavier senior about his/her thoughts on Xavier’s mission and blog about what they say. Saturday, Dec 12 2009

After interviewing a fellow Senior on the mission of Xavier, one can conclude that in order to create this just and humane society we have to orient ourselves to our community. We do this by seeing the ongoing problems and raising the question of  why these things are so? What historical praxis in the world allows for certian things such as poverty and corruptness in our community to prevail? We orient ourselves to our community by standing up for what’s just and humane. We are to raise the question as to why there is a single mom with three kids who are on welfare and barely able to keep the electricity on in the house. Why isn’t the average single mom afforded the opportunity to get a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD? Why does society instill in young girls fear that they can not reach their ultimate goals if they are to become pregnant? Most of the people in poverty in America are single mothered homes. As a professional in our fields we are to cater to discrepancies such as poverty. As a doctor we are to treat the poor and wealthy. We are to not limit lower income families to healthcare because they are not able to pay for insurance. Or as a proffesional in the business field we shouldn’t allow for insurance deals to be so expensive to where the general public can barely afford to pay for healthcare as well as any other neccessities in life. Creating a just and humane society allows for us to see the human in everyone and dismiss the materialism in the world.

Do some research on Katherine Drexel. Do you think she would be happy with Xavier today? Why or why not? Saturday, Dec 12 2009

Saint Katherine Drexel was born in Philadelphia,PN into a wealthy family. Her father and step mother taught her to be a blessing to others by giving what God had blessed her with–wealth. She opened a school for Native Americans in Santa Fe, Mexico in 1885. And opened up our institution, Xavier University, in 1915 for African Americans. Throughout her lifetime Saint Katherine Drexel dedicated herself to helping the minority community reach their goals by allowing them the chance to have an institution that can afford them the opportunity to get an education. At our school Saint Katherine Drexel teaches us to dedicate ourselves and our career to creating a just and humane society. Will she be happy with Xavier today? Yes she sould because the faculty and professors strive to educate us on the different ways we can continue the vision of Saint Katherine Drexel. Upon entering the campus, we take courses such as Freshman Seminar that not only introduce us to college life but to life period and what we are being called to do. The faculty does a great job at helping the students to realize what being in our career would entail–lifelong commitment to our community. For example, a student who wants to be a doctor is asked by the faculty to give a reason. Most of the time the student will reply: “I want to help people.” While this may be true its vague. Being a doctor entails more than just helping people because there are situations where a person just cannot be helped. So what is the doctor to do then? What reason will they have now to continue their career? We create a just and humane society by navigating ourselves to our community. We do this by staying committed and striving to better the world with our vision. Saint Katherine Drexel’s vision teaches us to be ethical in our lives and treat everyone with the respect of a brother/sister.

Why I Chose To Attend Xavier Friday, Dec 4 2009

I chose to come to Xavier because, like all freshman, I wanted to major in Biology and start my path to becoming a professional Doctor. However, once I got here I saw that science can be very boring and complicated. Since writing has always been my first and foremost love, I chose to take my beset friend’s advice and major in English. I
have always seen myself as quite the imaginator and very opinionated; with those two characterstics of myself I just went along with the idea and aspiration that I was meant to write. I feel that I reach out better to people in my writing than I would at being a doctor.
Upon choosing English as my major I could have just transfer schools and went to an institution such as Berkeley in California(one of the most prestigious institutions for English majors), I chose to stay here at Xavier and put our English department(although we’re small in number)on the map. With the success I plan on achieving in this world I feel that I owe it to myself, my city and one of the most well-respected schools in the New Orleanian community-Xavier-the opportunity to make this institution a top schools for a plethora of majors such as English, Political Science, Theology, History and other small department as well as the Sciences. Xavier is a great school and does it’s ultimate best to make the best professionals and people in the world. People need to see that the majors in the arts here at Xavier can excel professionally just as much as the science and pharmacy majors.

How has poverty helped and hurt New Orleans? Friday, Dec 4 2009

Poverty has surley benefitted in the sense that it has allowed for the city to acquire the resources needed to advance the discrepancies that’s been present for the past years. New Orleans has been suffering the most from a significant amount of problems such as corrupt governement, invaluable education in the public school, insufficient amount of jobs, violence in the inner city communities and a lack of care period from the people we look to the most to handle these problems-our government. These resources of money are suppose to better the living conditions in New Orleans. They’re suppose to give updated technology to the public schools, restore the houses and business places damaged by the hurricane, build a stronger levee and give the residents the needed resource to help offset their living expenses(i.e.section eight and DHAP).
Now has the government been doing right by these resources? The answer is DEFINITELY not. When you have situations going on where even the prison center is not kept up to the required standards then something is DEFINITELY going on with our system-it’s corrupt to the highest degree.

What are your professional plans and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Friday, Dec 4 2009

My professional plans are to become a Public Relations Specialist where I will be the source of information for various marketing companies. In being a source, I am the connection between the community and the company. For instance if I am to land a career with BET Public Relations my job would be to prepare the company’s press release so the public can be updated on the events and the professional state of the company.

How does my career support Xavier’s mission? In being a Public Relations Specialist, companies and firms look for a person with high moral standards and good judgement. Xavier’s mission teaches us to operate in a community where we are to treat others as we would want to be treated. In creating a just and humane society I will make sure that I live my life in solidarity with all inhabitants of the world. I will empathize and live amongst my community. In living amongst my community I will not let my “high paying job” separate me from “less fortunate” people. I will remember that I too was once less fortunate and should not forget where I came from. It’s ok to move up a step but in doing so one should not lose sight of a person’s humanity. Just because someone may live in a broken down house or make less money than myself, that does not mean that I the “more fortunate” one should turn my nose up and say that I cant associate myself with them now that I have my degree. Basically what Xavier is teaching us is to create a just and humane society where we always give back to our communities, treat our neighbor as our brother/sister and never forget where we came from because that’s the very aspect that has shaped us into a successful person.

What type of leadership skills do you posess? Friday, Dec 4 2009

The type of leadership skills I possess is the ability to follow suit when needed. In being a leader one cannot always be in the front running the show; if that’s the case then everyone would be fighting for power. There has to be a group of individuals that do not mind to follow

In following the leader one can learn from the person ahead and look to see what they can do better. This world we live in is a transforming one. Not all tactics used by certain leaders will be successful for long. There always has to be an upgrade. In following suit I can learn from the mistakes of other leaders and how to better their mistakes. I cannot officially call myself a leader if I do not allow for someone to lead at one point.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Friday, Dec 4 2009

My favorite class for this semester is theology 1170.This course is teaching me to seet the world in a different perspective. I am learning to be more critical of my society and the historical praxis of the people. I see myself being more critical of the church also. The church is merely a place for individuals to worship. The church also becomes a place that preaches to its inhabitants how to be a good Christian in a very sinful society. In the church preaching these religious values and morals it rarely calls into question the injustice of the government we have. The church rarely ask why are there homeless people on the street or why are the people suffering to get through life. The church rarely calls into question the praxis of higher power; like why do the government choose to regulate resources such as food when this isn’t suppose to be so because God makes it possible for the food to be produced and it’s to be distributed equally amongst indiviuals AT NO COST. Finally theology calls into the question of the relationship between God, his people and their relationship to each other as well as Him. People need to understand that in hurting each other we also hurt God. God is not a figure in heaven looking down on us; he is apart of us and in this world along with us. He’s suffering just as we are suffering. After I am finished with this course I believe I will have a different approach to the world.
