Save Our Cemeteries Thursday, Feb 3 2011

Save Our Cemeteries can help society and the beautification of New Orleans. Just like when people feel better about themselves when they look good. I feel that the people of New Orleans would feel better about their city if the cemeteries of New Orleans are well kept. It would help to continue on with their unique way of doing their funerals.
Save Our Cemeteries help keep the legacy of cemeteries going. Back in the older days, cemeteries where kept up more for the living than the dead. They were beautiful places to go and celebrate the life that their deceased love ones. People’s burial site shouldn’t be neglected. Since New Orleans crime rate is pretty high, Save Our Cemeteries is just one way that could stop violence in New Orleans. Getting young people involved and helping them understand that they are doing something for a great cause could help the crime rate. Save Our Cemeteries contributes to the welfare on New Orleans. It helps bring the culture back to New Orleans, especially after everything the city has been through.

Memorable Funeral Monday, Jan 10 2011

A memorable funeral I went to was my grandmother. The year was 2000 and I couldn’t believe she was gone. I work up one morning in August to my mother crying on the phone. She was trying to get in touch with my father because his mother just had a heart attack. I didn’t understand the seriousness of a heart attack and went to school thinking my grandmother would be fine when I get home. My father came and picked me up and I asked him was grandmother alright. He said no and that he told her to give his father a kiss for him, who died the year before I was born. I couldn’t do anything but cry. My grandmother was everything to me, and till this day I still haven’t gotten over her death.  I remember going to her house the night before the funeral, there were so many people there, and I felt out of place. I didn’t want to spend the night because it just didn’t feel the same without her being there.

The church was packed with people I had never seen before. Its funny how they never stopped by to see her but they all came to her funeral.  Her casket was white and she was dressed in pink. I didn’t start to cry till I went to view her body. That’s when everything went downhill. She was the one I was closest to and now she was gone. I didn’t know what to do. I knew she was in more pain on here on earth, but I was selfish and wanted her to stay with me. As they buried her body I stood with my father. I never seen him shed a tear; I guess he was accepting the fact that she was in a better place. From that day on I didn’t want to be bothered and her death affected me in a very negative way.

End of my first semester at XU Saturday, Dec 11 2010

My first semester at Xavier was not what I expected but it kept me grounded. I came into to college not knowing a thing about it, and now I have to make next semester better. I have to do better. Now that I know how things work, I am going to do a lot better. This semester was a learning experience. I made friends and I got to know the people that are a lifetime friend. Xavier University sticks by what they say. The mission and rules are strongly regulated, and every rule is made for a reason. We are not here getting our degrees but also learning life skills. Many people should already have most of these life skills, but Xavier can also make up for the ones who might not. I’m glad I chose Xavier University and I don’t plan on leaving till I am finished.

Farmer and balance Saturday, Dec 11 2010

The welfare of Farmer’s patients is much more important because his patients are dear to him. He cares a lot about them and even though he wishes he had more help, he takes what is given makes things out of it. His patients are dying and need his help so that’s why it’s important that he is there for them. He is the one man that’s making a difference and helping with no money. They appreciate him for taking his time and diligently caring for them and even helping their families out. He never gives up on a patient so that shows what it more important to him. He is there to change things for the better and I feel that he did.

Katherine Drexel Saturday, Dec 11 2010

St. Katherine Drexel would be proud to see the many African American students that attend Xavier University. I think that she would be proud of those that chose to further their education in today’s society. Her mission to educate the minority still lives on and I think she would like the fact that Asians are now choosing Xavier University.  I don’t know how she would feel about the different religions here, or how many people don’t attend Mass, but I’m sure it would be something she would accept. I don’t think she would agree on spending all the money the school gets on the science building, but that’s nothing we can change now. Katherine Drexel would be proud of the school, but I don’t think she would be happy about our generation. Since the school was founded when African Americans and Native Americans really couldn’t get an education, I think she would say this generation whines too much about what Xavier University don’t have. I don’t think she founded Xavier University to be some type of party school. She was simply trying to make the school and educational institution and that is what my generation can’t seem to understand. Universities are not founded for parties or different events. It’s founded so hopefully you can take something from it and make something out of yourself. Katherine Drexel would agree with the rules that Xavier University has. I’m grateful for Katherine Drexel be the caring person she was to state and educational institute for African Americans.

Email to favorite teacher. Saturday, Dec 11 2010

Dear Mr. Tuman,

Thank you for being a great English teacher. I felt that you made the course very interesting, and I wish I could take your class next semester but the time was conflicting. I really tried my hardest to make an A in your class, but I know it was my own fault for not turning in one assignment. Once again thank you for being a fun teacher.

What role does money play in Farmer’s quest to provide health care? Friday, Oct 15 2010

Money is not everything to Paul Farmer. What he is doing in Haiti is mostly on his own. He make do with what he have and take whatever he is given. In the story, it says how he gave up on his salary that a doctor makes in America to go to Haiti and open a clinic there. Most doctors would not do anything like that because most of them feel they are supposed to get a certain amount of money. Farmer feels that people have the right to health care rather rich or poor. If you are sick you should have the right to get cured. Farmer knew that what he was doing required some type of funds so he had Boston behind him the whole time. When people would donate he was grateful. A lot of people felt that something was wrong with the good deeds Farmer was doing. People are so caught up on money that they don’t realize good come to those who do good things. Farmer was a fine example of a doctor, and the true reason people should become doctors. Not for the money, but for the wellbeing of others.

. What role does Farmer’s Catholic heritage play in his work? Does your religious heritage influence your work? Friday, Oct 15 2010

Paul Farmer’s catholic background only plays a small roll in his work. He just feels that taking caring of his patients is the right thing to do. He doesn’t consider himself a God or a saint. He just does the right thing. Farmer does believe that good things come to those who do the right thing. In the story, he gave one of his AIDs patients his check because the man was about to be evicted. The next day his friend came and gave him some money. Farmer’s friend told him it was impractical of him to do such a good deed, but that just go to show how good Paul Farmer were to his patients.
Being raised in a Baptist church, religion plays a great deal in my work. I was taught to pray continuously and God would answer my prayers. Whenever I face something hard that’s just God way of testing me. When I’m doing the right thing and going down the right path, that’s God guidance. My mother tells me all the time to pray and ask God to help me. Whenever I have a test or I need help on something I pray to God for remembrance. I am reminded to keep my faith in him by the fact that is I am still alive today. God has brought me this far and I refuse to turn my back to him. God is with me no matter what I am doing. I call on him even more now because I am on my own in another state. No matter what, I am taught to trust in him and I believe that no matter what I grow through I can always count on God to be there for me.
