Student Interview Sunday, Nov 29 2009

Nicky Augustine

“I agree with Xavier’s Mission. I think it’s important for students to position themselves for leadership. Students often fail to realize that being a leader is better than being a follower. Most students think that it’s all right to follow others instead of leading other people towards the right direction. Xavier’s mission also emphasizes on serving others. Serving other is a big part of life. Helping other people can have positive impacts on the lives of people all across the world. Serving and leadership are too important things based on Xavier’s mission.”

Email sent to Teacher Sunday, Nov 29 2009

Dear Dr. McFerrin:

I would like to take the time out and say thank you for all the work you have done during this semester. I appreciate all that you do to try and better the lectures in Biology. I know that it can be tough dealing with students, especially people who constantly talk in class and do not pay attention. Even though no one is perfect in life, you always tried your best to make sure that we as a class understood the information that was presented to us. I’m sure it is not easy talking in front of people everyday. I also know that it can be boring saying the same stuff over and over, but you do not let it phase you and you continue to do your job as a professor. I applaud you for all of your hardwork, and I send to you best wishes in the future.

Sincerely,
Martika Prince

Would St.Katharine Drexel be happy with Xavier today? Tuesday, Nov 10 2009

I think that St.Katharine Drexel would be very happy with Xavier today. She was a person who did whatever it took to give back to other people. Xavier is a school that’s all about giving. There are many events that go on in which Xavier is helping people by encouragement or lending a helping hand. If St.Katharine Drexel was here today, I’m sure she would thank President Norman C. Francis for continuing on with her dream. Xavier is a school that makes sure that people of different backgrounds have a chance to become all that he or she can be.  When St. Katharine was on different missions, she didn’t look at a person’s color or nationality. She looked at the person as someone who needs a helping hand, and she was the one who helped them. Xavier is all about reaching out to people who are being labeled by the American society. I believe that St. Katharine Drexel  would be proud of Xavier University.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Tuesday, Sep 29 2009

New Orleans is a city that experiences poverty. Poverty has hurt New Orleans because people are not buying as much stuff as they use to. When people do not have money, they cannot purchase items, which mean businesses’ sales begin to lower. When sales are lowered, it causes businesses’ to lose money. I’m pretty sure that no one wants to have to go out of business for low sale rates. Because of poverty, some people do not have insurance or savings for emergencies. If a disaster was to occur, the people who are in poverty would have no way to escape immediately. Poverty has benefited New Orleans because more money can be accessed to help the people of this city. Then again, in my opinion, I don’t see how poverty can benefit a city. Besides being able to receive more money, how can poverty bring life to New Orleans? I think that this question is based upon a person’s personal reasons.

What would Barack Obama’s father think of the book? Tuesday, Sep 29 2009

I think that Barack Obama’s father would find the book to be very interesting. His father would get a chance to read about how Obama truly felt about his childhood and other things. Obama and his dad didn’t have the perfect relationship, then again no father and son does. I think that his father would get to see for himself about how Obama felt about him and how their relationship was. In Barack Obama’s book, he expresses his feelings and view about the world and his family. Not everyone expresses himself or herself to everyone. Instead, some people tend to write out his or her feelings rather than talking about them. Barack’s father would get to read about what his son believed and what he thought of him as a father. I believe that Barack Obama’s father would be proud of his son for writing such a powerful book to share with the world.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Tuesday, Sep 29 2009

My favorite class is biology lab. I actually like the vibe that I get whenever I enter into the class. Even though I can’t understand the teacher sometimes, he is still a good person and doesn’t mind helping students when in need. The students in my class are easy to get along with and are not rude or obnoxious. I enjoy the biology labs that we do. Each activity that is done is interesting and has a specific meaning as to why it’s important to the science field. Biology lab is my favorite class because it’s not too hard or too easy. My opinion is that the class is more of a mellow type class. The information that is given to us can be easily obtained and understood. Some teachers tend to hand out information or write stuff on the board without explaining what he or she passed out or wrote. If a student does not understand a certain lab or subject, then the teacher takes his time out to work with the student during the labs. In conclusion, my biology lab class is my favorite class, so far.

What type of leadership skills do you possess? Tuesday, Sep 15 2009

I possess a lot of leadership skills. I am a leader in my own way. I am the type of person who helps others out because I don’t like to see things being down out of order. I like things to be done in a 5-star manner and not half-hearted. Making sure that people give his or her best is what categorizes me as being a leader. A leader listens to what others have to say and encourages others throughout life. I consider myself to be a leader because I possess the spirit of humility. I am a humble person and do what I am told. Even though sometimes it’s hard to do what is told, I still do what I have to do. I am also a person who never settles for anything but the best. I don’t want to see others being treated with disrespect or anything in that manner. I will speak up about situations when I feel the urge to. I consider myself to be a great leader.

What are my professional plans and how does Xavier’s misson affect that? Wednesday, Sep 2 2009

As far as my professional plans, I have a lot I want to accomplish in life. Of course I’m going to finish my 4 years here at Xavier. Afterwards, I want to attend David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. I will complete my 4 years in medical school and then begin my residency. After the whole medical process is over, I’m going to open up my very own pediatric clinic in California. I want to be able to give a job opportunities for future students who will be attending medical school after me. My own pediatic clinic will allow me to help other people in my own unique way and bring a new twist to the medical field. Xavier’s mission affects my future professional plans because Xavier’s goal is to assist students in being all that they can be in life. Xavier’s mission is basically about giving opportunities to those who feel as though they cant accomplish anything in life or for those who doesn’t have the guidance that he or she needs. Xavier’s mission combined with my professional plans will leave an impact on people’s lives all over the world.

Why did I choose Xavier? Wednesday, Sep 2 2009

Before choosing Xavier, I researched many colleges and thought about attending school there. I heard a lot of people talking about Xavier. The school’s academic record and programs came up a lot whenever a person mentioned Xavier University. I decided to research the school on my own; I came to the conclusion that Xavier is somewhere I would like to have my college experience at. I like the whole environment of Xavier. Everyone welcomes everyone in spite of his or her race, sex, religion, nationality, etc. Xavier is a challenging school; however, I feel that Xavier will help me to pursue my career in the medical field. Well all know that Xavier is known for its Pre-Med and Pre-Pharmacy programs, but I feel like Xavier will offer so much more than just a helping hand in these specific areas. After visiting Xavier for the Lagniappe orientation, I made my final decision that Xavier is where I want to be. I know that the decision I made will indeed pay off in the long run.
