An email to your favorite teacher. Sunday, Nov 29 2009

Hey.  I am emailing you to let you know that you are a great teacher.  Although you are only my advisor and unfortunately not my teacher, I still consider you a good teacher.  Throughout the semester you have been very supporting and encouraging.  Despite the fact that I have hit a few bumps in the road, you have always been there to encourage me and to keep me moving on.  Also, when I have come to you with questions or concerns, you have been there to answer all of them.  Many times when I have expressed that I have had trouble with a certain class, You have made helpful suggestions such as attending studyor tutoring sessions to improve, or you have given me constructive criticism .  Recently, youpatiently helped me find various summer programs that I can apply to.  Overall, I just want to thank you for your hard work and your words of encouragement that have kept me going !

Interview with senior. Week nine Sunday, Nov 29 2009

” The Xavier mission statement sets a great foundation for students to acheive academic success.  For example, students are encouraged to not only acheieve academic success but also give back to society as a whole.  It strives to teach us leadership.  The statement teaches us to strive on a more challenging level where we are not only making sure we perform well in school but also being concerned for others including persons outside the Xavier community which molds students into persons with a better character and heart.  It also pushes students at Xavier to be more productive citizens.  Giving back to the community is important to a students overall character and his/her everyday.  Giving back is essential and defines who you are as a person.  Virtually it is the meaning of what just and humane are.  If a person is acheiving alot but not giving back than you are not in anyway human but a selfess creature.  This mission statement essentially teaches us students as a whole how to sympathize and empathize with others in a more selfless manner.”

Do you think Katherine Drexel would be happy with Xavier today? why or why not ? Sunday, Nov 29 2009

Yes I she would.  Xavier is a school that has progressed greatly.  She would be happy due to the enthusiasm of the students, the involvement of teachers, and the scenery of Xavier is amazing.  She would be happy to see so many young african-american students so enthusiastic about setting ambitious goals such as becoming a doctor, becoming a pharmacist, or a chemical researcher.  Although Xavier started off as a very small historically black college, it has exceeded its numbers and has encouraged many aspiring and aspired doctors, pharmacists.    She would also love to see that most the time instead of most students partying, many are in the library or in their room studying friday and saturday nights.  In addition, many of the instructors are very involved with the students.  Although the instructors are usually very busy,  they still take time out to make sure their students are on track and still tending to their work.  Instructors provide study sessions, tutoring sessions, review sessions, etc.  to make sure their  students are acheiving at higher levels.  Lastly she would be happy with Xavier now to know that the scenery is breath taking.  We have a new university center suppied with study rooms, a game room, a computer/hangout room, a cafe, a cafeteria, etc.  Furthermore, we are cleaning up the Xavier vicinity and building more buildings and parking lots.

What would Barack Obama’s father think of the book? Tuesday, Oct 13 2009

I think his father would be very proud of him.  There were many racial issues as Obama grew up and also his father.  Throughout most of Obama’s childhood he constantly tried to identify with a crowd he could really connect with.  The kids would constantly question his ethnicity because of the color of his hair.  The structure of his nose, or the texture of his hair.  Later on in life, Obama began to realize it did not matter what you looked like or how you were perceived on the outside but what you had to offer on the inside.  He was a young progressive adult living in the seventies decade.  Although as he attended Harvard and numerous other sophisticated colleges, many who knew Obama and knew how ambitious he was saw his race as a setback in the future, but Obama was not one to pity himself for long about issues he could not change.  So he made the most of his life and situations and one day became successful as it is told in his book. He was underestimated by both sides but yet still achieved the maximum success any man would want and that is why his father would be happy that his son wrote this realistic book of how society treated him and his trials and tribulations throughout life.

what is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Sunday, Sep 20 2009

My favorite class at Xavier right now is English.  In English, not only do we talk about grammar, punctuation, and the usual comma splices, but we also discuss topics that require deep thought.  Although I usually find English quite boring and redundant, it is more of an outlet to me now. The teacher usually gives us topics to choose from or we choose our own topic, and we learn not only about what type of essay we are writing, but we also learn more about ourselves.  I have learned that the more essays a person writes giving their opinions and ideas, the more a person learns about themselves and their personal views and judgments.   For example, the teacher gave us a topic, telling us to write about a friend or someone we looked up to but somehow disappointed us.  I wrote about a friend I once looked up to.  As I wrote about her I realized I had expressed very deep thoughts and views on her and how writing is very reflective a your own personal views.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Sunday, Sep 20 2009

Poverty has benefited New Orleans because it pushes its city-dwellers to work harder.  New Orleans poverty stricken area has also benefited because so many charities around the area strive to make sure locals have the proper resources to live and be educated.  Although it seems like a benefit, there is still much work needed in the city of New Orleans.  The poverty in New Orleans has hurt it because wherever poverty lies, so does crime.  Crime is crucial to a persons life.  Before Katrina, New Orleans was rated the number one city in the nation for homicides.  Poverty has also affected Xavier because fewer tourists want to see dilapidated houses and buildings that have barely been taken care of.  The poverty affects this city because it has no money to rebuild and renovate buildings and houses that desperately need it. This is a very depressing factor to think about that desperately needs to be addressed, but schools like Xavier, who have students that want to give back, volunteer to clean-up the community and show concerns for the local inhabitants and their overall well being.

what type of leadership skills do you possess? Sunday, Sep 20 2009

I think I have great leadership skills.  I am a very friendly person.  I feel, in order to lead, first, you have to be friendly and meet others.  I am also very talkative. Once I meet a person, I am very talkative.  I consider myself  a well-rounded person, so I can talk about just about anything.  I feel I am a leader academically because I set standards for my peers and family.  I spend most of my time studying.  So, when my friends see me studying all the time, I think it motivates them to do the same.  I also try to motivates my siblings to be leaders academically by performing well in school and setting an example for others.  I am also a leader because I only follow on rare occasions.  I set my own pace, I am my own person.  I let no one mislead me or fool me.  Lastly, I am a leader because I am innovative.

what are your professional plans and how does Xavier’s mission affect that ? Sunday, Sep 20 2009

My professional plans are to become a doctor, preferably an infectious disease doctor. By attending Xavier, my chances of being accepted are much higher than me attending any other school.  Right now, there is a desperate need for infectious disease doctors.  As an infectious disease doctor, I plan to find a cure for viruses such as the flu which is very precarious to the human race.  Other destructive diseases that attack your immune system such as AIDS should be researched and found a cure for also. Xavier’s mission is to mold its students and prepare them for pharmacy and medical school. This will affect my professional plans because it will give me a better chance as an African-American student to one, embrace my own talents and abilities :and two, have a better chance of good medical schools accepting me. I feel Xavier is the best school for helping me get accepted into medical school.

why did you choose to come to Xavier ? Sunday, Sep 20 2009

I chose to come to Xavier because it is the number one school for getting African-Americans in medical school and pharmacy school, but initially I wanted to go to Hampton University, another HBCU that was not as widely known as Xavier for getting students into medical and pharmacy school.  Although Hampton was a good school, it definitely did not give me a better chance of getting into medical school and it was too far away from home.  I found out about Xavier through its website, newspapers, and through word.  My sister attended Xavier for two years, so she gave me pretty good insight on how Xavier was.  When I was in high school, she usually told me about the exciting events Xavier usually provided.  She told me stories of toga parties, neophyte shows, and music on the lawn.  She told be about coronation and the boat-ride.  All the activities excited me and drew me closer to Xavier, but not only did she emphasize the fun activities, she also emphasized how serious it was and how school was still important.
