Email to Favorite Teacher. Sunday, Dec 13 2009

It reads;

Dear Dr.Wester,
This is your favorite student Leah McCraw writing you to thank you for helping my first semester of college a breeze. Your class was definitely a breathe of fresh air at the end of my long work days! I think we have bonded better than a lot of students do with their professors and I appreciate your humbleness and your warm welcoming into the college atmosphere. On account of you meeting my mother before you met me, you got to see what type of home-life I have and where I get my strong personality from. You learned me very well the first few days and, most importantly, you didn’t let me drive you insane! I love you like you’re family and I wish you and yours very happy holidays!
Oh! And I used you as a reference on a job application! Haha! Be expecting a call and please be nice!
Your Bestest Student EVER,
Leah McCraw

Senior View on Mission Statement. Sunday, Dec 13 2009

I interviewed a senior, who asked to remain anonymous, regarding Xavier University’s mission statement. In this interview the senior said “Well, this statement is very strong and very hard to abide by. Sometime through your college experience you can get side-tracked and even forget why you’re here, but it’s just that you have to know what you’re here to do in correspondence to what you want to do, and how can you apply the mission statement to your final decisions. I know plenty of time I’ve thought about  changing my major, or even dropping out. But then I have to ask myself again what it is that I came to Xavier for, what I want to do with my life, how do I want to be remembered, and how can I make Xavier, New Orleans, or just the south a better place trough Xavier’s Mission Statement?” Basically, what I learned from this interview is that I need to pin-point my goals with the statement and stay focused on what I want to do.

Would Katherine Drexel be Proud? Sunday, Dec 13 2009

Upon learning that Katherine Drexel is known as the Patron Saint of racial justice and of philanthropists, I would assume that today she is very proud of her University. She dedicated her life and inheritance to the needs of oppressed blacks and even today, our college is made up predominantly of blacks. Katherine would be pleased to know that Xavier is an active member of the community and the city. They constantly engage in activities for the needy as well as community services and outreach programs. Learning that one of her main interests was to further the education of people, she would be pleased to know that Xavier University has not lower their educational standards, instead they raise the bar ever-so-often and challenge their students and faculty to go above and beyond the average thinking spectrum.

What would Barack Obama’s father think of the book? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

Through pages 256-261, Obama’s care for young men and their need of male guidance is displayed. i think his concern on this issue is brought about by the love, affection, and guidance his father provided for him. Obama wishes we would have been permitted more time with his father and sympathizes for the young men who hadn’t even had the opportunity that he had. With his excellence and dedication to his education, I think there’s no better word to describe how his father would feel other than “proud”. What more can a man ask for in a son? Obama’s hard work at everything he did and to his setting goals for himself and accomplishing them, would make his father so proud. He obviously had a very close relationship with his father and what he’s done through this book is honored his father. He has a yearning for guiding other young en in hopes to better them because he knows that was the effect his father had on him.

What is my Favorite Class at Xavier and Why? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

My favorite class thusfar would have to be my Intro to Mass Communications class with Dr. Webster. The class is rather small and the room is cozy so I get the feel of being one-on-one with my professor. Not only does my teacher relate to her audience by staying on top of media trends and her awareness of our pop culture, she has conquered a way of being polite, but stern. Her sarcasm makes class fly by and her assignments are simple and fun. On days where the students substitute as the teacher to prove that we know what the lessons are about, we engage in interactive activities and incorporate currrent events into our lessons. The class is altogether very entertaining with the help of our text book being recently published so there are up-to-date events such as Obama’s election, Desperate Housewives, and American Idol episodes as examples. The class is so small that it feels more like a group or family, so I’m comfortable with my peers, which makes class a lot easier to sit through.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

Tourism and media attention are two main sources of New Orleans’ income. I think poverty has effected our culture and in turn, effected our income. Without places like the Quarters, or the media the poverty stricken lower ninth ward attracts, New Orleans’ money circulation would be altered; possibly for the worse. Although the poverty of my city has some benefits, poverty has mostly harmed us. Poverty is the reason behind crime, poor educations, and separation of classes. Criminals may commit an act of violence due to their social status; rob someone to steal money or valuables to gain money. Education in New Orleans is already far behind compared to other areas, especially in certain areas of the city where the teacher care less than the students. Children who do not receive the proper education, have no will for learning the legit way of escaping their poverty, instead they turn to ‘the streets’. Although poverty may take up a majority of the city, New Orleans does, in fact, have upper class neighborhoods. One thing my mother taught me was, ‘the system is all about the rich staying rich and the poor staying poor’. Unfortunately this is proven true through the separation of classes in the city. A ride down St.Charles Ave. compared to a ride on A.P.Turead Ave. are prime examples.

What Type of Leadership Skills do I Posess? Friday, Oct 9 2009

Being the very aggressive person that I am, I have the capabilities of persuading individuals and altering what they think. I am charismatic and a powerful speaker, so I am able to get my point across to people with ease. My social skills are great so I am able to relate to all of my audiences and make sure my point get across and is understood by my listeners. Aside from my public speaking talents, I am a good active listener and a good sport. By good sport, I mean that I take constructive criticism well and I incorporate advice given to me in future experiences. I am somewhat a perfectionist and if I have a task to complete, I manage my time so I have ample time to perform my task to the best of my abilities. When it comes to group assignments, I find myself taking charge a lot of times just because I feel that projects are easier to complete if one person has the main idea and the others just carry out their assigned tasks.

What Are My Professional Plans and How does Xavier’s Mission Affect them? Friday, Oct 9 2009

In the future I plan to become a news anchor or a news reporter. In order to do so, I am majoring in mass communications and I am an active member with activities in the communications department. Today, the media is a major influence on culture, style, even mindsets. In Xavier’s mission, it is mentioned that the students of this institution are in preparation to assume roles of leadership and service in global society. My role post graduation will be a service in global society because I will be somewhat an icon for my audience to emulate.  My service would be my influence on my viewers. I would have the capability to shape their minds and perspectives. With my charisma and classiness, I will mold my audience members into ideal citizens for a better society with the skills and strategies I learn from communication classes. In the future I hope to honor the name of Xavier and make my university proud.

Why Did I Choose Xavier? Friday, Oct 9 2009

Xavier University has been somewhat of a tradition in my family. My aunts have attended this university and one was actually crowned Miss Xavier. Being that my family has high expectations of me, they influence me to want to excel. Xavier is a wonderful institute which will open many doors for me and help direct on the right path for my future career. Learning that Xavier has a strong communications department was only a bonus. I love my city and had been decided that my freshmen year i would remain here as an extra comfort while getting adjusted to college life. My familiarity with the city eases some tensions in my adjustment and I have many friends from high school that attend college with me that help to make this experience an enjoyable one. So far, I’ve adapted very well to Xavier and the campus is just as fn and exciting as my aunt described it was some 30 years ago.
