Xavier is a good school, very challenging and I’m sure that will all pay off in the end. Xavier’s campus is quite small however with no real student life which is a let down. I never see the mission statement involved with any kind of activity here. Overall, I like it here.

Week Twelve 11:28 pm
Fast Food Nation, was, Interesting at the least. However I can never totally get engaged in required reading when it doesn’t have a literary analysis attached or anything like that so i feel as if I didn’t retain as much from it as you would have wanted. From what I actually read the novel was quite interesting.
Week 11 Thursday, Dec 8 2011
Week Eleven 11:26 pm
Interstates and cars increased the popularity of fast food restaurants. If you were traversing form one side of a city to another you typically had no time to stop at a home or a diner and take part in a home cooked meal. Your only choice is pulling through the ‘drive-thru’ window of any McDonalds at the time. Or if one worked a busy job and had no time to cook a meal later for their family they could just as easily stop at a McDonalds and pick up something for them there. Thus, the birth of the fast food nation really began because of the interstates and such.

Week Nine Thursday, Dec 8 2011
Week Nine 11:17 pm
Xavier Senior: None.
Quite Honestly, I know no seniors and I’m much too intimidated to go out and try to speak to one of them. That’s just awkward and I’d rather not get denied and get a less than adequate answer to my question.
Week 7 Thursday, Dec 8 2011
Week Seven 11:13 pm
I don’t think that the author does have an political agenda. I believe that Eric Schlosser just wants to see a change within the fast food industry. I think that he just doesn’t agree with the quality of food provided to the American public and all his book posses is a change. I also believe he’s out to change workers rights in these fast food industries; to provide support and health care to the immigrant workers. Schlosser isn’t trying to run for president or any type of political office. He’s just out to better our lives.
Week Eight Friday, Nov 11 2011
Week Eight 12:17 am
I believe that Katherine Drexel would indeed be pleased with the state that Xavier University is currently in. Xavier prides itself greatly on giving to others and this is shown through our want to volunteer and help others. Were also a proud HBCU that gives out a quality education. The university also stayed Catholic and still has nuns and priests on campus which would probably bring great joy to her.
Week 5 Tuesday, Sep 13 2011
Week Five 7:14 pm
My favorite class at Xavier University has to be my English class that’s taught by Dr. Alexios Moore. I have that class at 9:25 on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 50 minutes, and in general it’s always a fantastic start to a quick day. I have his class then I go straight to math, and then I finish for the day. The reason why I really have a deep love for English is that it’s my favorite subject. I adore writing and reading; everything that class would entail. However one always needs encouragement to write and Dr. Moore is perfect for that because he keeps me engaged in the class because he’s hilarious and he always goes off on interesting tangents.
Week 4 Tuesday, Sep 13 2011
Week Four 9:51 am
Sinclair’s novel “The Jungle” was an expose of the meat packing industry, showcasing the disgusting process the meat went through and also what went into the meat (such as human remains). The book created uproar within society and even caused the president at the time to create a task force to look deeper into the situation. The reason why Sinclair’s novel was so controversial is because it highlighted how disgusting the food industry can be in a time when there were no real alternatives to different healthier food. “Fast Food Nation” will not be able to do what”The Jungle” did. It not only needs more people to read it but it needs a powerful person behind a radical food movement; like Oprah or Obama. In this day and age people simply don’t care about the food that they ingest, it’s like the “don’t ask don’t tell” policy in the army. Because of that and because Fast Food Nation is more historical then controversial nothing within the fast food industry will change. There’s not enough anger and there’s too much tolerance. There needs to be a food strike or something of that epic nature to get the fast food companies to stop producing such foul food. Until that happens the fast food empire will never change.
Small Farmers Against Large Franchises Thursday, Sep 8 2011
Week Three 12:12 am
One of the negative factors that have affected small family farmers is that they aren’t correctly compensated for the amount of potatoes they provide to big time processing companies. For example, Potato growers are being overrun by the processors of their french fries. When fast food restaurants sell the fries to the consumers the processors are paid all the money such as 1.50 for every large order of fries, while the growers will only receive 2 cents from that sell. If the small family farmers want to survive they have to become bigger and better than all the other companies and process potatoes for themselves or go so far into debt that its virtually impossible for them to pull themselves to make profit. Big companies greatly benefit from this of course because they get the bulk of the profit. However, I believe that the companies will also lose profit because if the prices are so low that the farmers can’t make any profit thus not being able to sell potatoes, how would any one gain profit? The large processing companies will get nasty cheap poor quality potatoes that will hinder consumption and kill the potato business. Another thing that harms potato farmers is that the people who run processing plants have no knowledge of potatoes, unlike the spud mogul JR Simplot, they wont be able to know what’s right for consumers or processing plants. Schlosser quotes a Multon in saying that “companies are now run by men with ‘MBA’s from Harvard who don’t know if a potato grows in a tree or underground’”. I believe that if farm workers band together and become a union of some kind they will be able to achieve better profits and not get undermined by big time growers
