What are your thoughts about Xavier and its mission after your first semester? Thursday, Dec 2 2010

Arriving at Xavier I had a general idea of what the school was going to be like. I knew that Xavier was known for getting students mostly african-americans into medical school and that their course load was very difficult because they want you to do well. I expected to have a very successful semester and for me to make a good transition from the high school experience to the college experience. I planned to meet a lot of people; some who have similar characteristics as me and are in the same major and meeting others who are not. I feel like the school is giving us freedom but also teaching us responsibility. I learned a lot during this semester. Xavier’s mission is to ultimately contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society. I definitely believe that Xavier University of Louisiana holds true to this statement. The faculty, staff, and administration do their best to ensure that students are not only learning, but are maturing through the means of sincerity, community service,  courage, professional development, and social awareness.  The student organizations and activities that are on campus do an ample  job of being true to these  statements, as the sole purpose is not to just join and organization to serve as a builder, basically for personal and giving back to the community.  Xavier shows  a lot of pride and everyone follows the mission statement proudly.  The faculty, administration, and upper class-men here at Xavier encourage everyone to be apart of the school by teaching the alma mater and learning the mission statement. This is one of the many things that I like about this school because I know at other schools the mission statement and alma mater are not stressed enough.

Farmer tries to balance his desire to treat individual patients with the need for his attendance at high-profile meetings. When Farmer arrived in Boston he told Ophelia that he heard two sets of voices. At one ear he heard friends and allies saying he should concentrate on the big issues of world health and, at the other ear, the groans of his Haitian patients: the voice of the world saying, “This meeting’s important,” and the voice of Haiti saying, “My child is dying.”  When you ask which of these two are ultimately important I would have to say they are equally important. I believe that it is very difficult to say one weighs more than the other.  If one exceeds higher than the other, there will be no balance.  For instance, his desire to treat individuals is crucial to being a physician. Basically a doctor’s role is to treat patients in his or her community.  On the other hand, going to high-profile meetings is also a necessity and is crucial to being a doctor. The reason why is because when he goes to meetings he is learning new information on how he can treat the Haitian people. He is able to see what he can provide them with and he becomes knowledgeable and skillful. Being in meetings and discussing new technology is also very important. It’s good to have a group of people giving ideas to advancement in technology. Farmer being the head of his department, it is very important that he is able to lead important discussions. Overall, I believe that these two aspects are equally important. Paul Farmer can’t have one without the other to continue with his mission. I believe that if he did choose one over the other is mission would not get very far and he won’t be able to get the full effect of what he is setting out to do.

Email to your favorite teacher. Sunday, Nov 28 2010

Dear Dr. Norris,

I’m very thankful for all your hard work that you put in to teaching me the material. I remember when I first walked into class, I felt small and shy because there weren’t a lot of freshman in the class. You would call on students and they would know the answer and I wouldn’t understand any of it. I began to feel like this class and Xavier University wasn’t for me. I remember I was in the library all the time reading and preparing myself for the class discussions and trying to learn the material. I remember struggling with the article responses that we had to do. Sending you emails and talking to you continuously helped me understand how to think as a sociologists. I remember you telling me not to give up and that I will gradually do better in your class.  I’m glad that you were able to help me get through your class. I appreciate all the support that you have given me. I’m also glad that you were able to realize the path that I needed to get on and show me that it’s not the end of the world when I didn’t do well on a quiz. I appreciate the patience and your time that you gave me. You broke everything down for me and you wouldn’t stop explaining it until I was able to answer throughly any questions you had about the particular topic that we were discussing proving to you that I knew much about the topic. I noticed that by getting help and not being embarrassed to get the help, brought my grades up. In class I was able to engage in the class discussions. I felt better about the material and I’m doing a lot better in your class.

The best teacher is the one who suggests rather than dogmatize, and inspires his listener with the wish to teach himself.

Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton

Thank you,

Kai Prophete

Interview a Xavier senior about his/her thoughts on Xavier’s mission Sunday, Nov 28 2010

The ultimate purpose of the University is to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society. This preparation takes place in a diverse learning and teaching environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including research and community service.I interviewed a senior and he would like to remain anonymous. I asked him what his major was and he said it was sociology. In this interview the senior said “Well, this statement is very strong and very hard to follow by at times. He believed that this statement has great value and should be followed by everyone. We should not just use it at Xavier but keep it in mind when we go out into the real world. He stated that sometime through your college experience you can get side-tracked and even forget why you’re here, but it’s just that you have to know what you’re here to do in correspondence to what you want to do, and how can you apply the mission statement to your final decisions. I know plenty of time I’ve thought about  changing my major, or giving up on school. But then I have to ask myself again what it is that I came to Xavier for, what I want to do with my life, how do I want to be remembered, and how can I make Xavier, New Orleans, or just the south a better place trough Xavier’s Mission Statement?” Basically, what I learned from this interview is that I need to pin-point my goals with the statement and stay focused on what I want to do. He said that being a senior now he has realized that many of the people ahead of him that have graduated have become successful and are giving back to Xavier and their community.

Katherine Drexel Sunday, Nov 28 2010

Saint Katherine Drexel dedicated her life and inheritance to the needs of oppressed Native Americans and African-Americans. She was a vocal advocate of racial tolerance. She established a religious order, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Native Americans and African-Americans. She founded Xavier University of Louisiana. She sought to create an institution where people were taught to be leaders and create a more just and humane society. Saint Katherine Drexel valued community service and that learning occurred well in the right environment. I believe that Saint Katherine Drexel will be happy with Xavier at the moment because they follow her mission. The professors at Xavier offer a lot of help and give us more than enough work to do. The school provides us with more than enough help with all different labs, where you can receive help in any subject. I feel that Xavier does not meet the quote for a just society, meaning people will go out and make a difference. I feel that Xavier is mostly promoting students to become doctors and there is no diversity. i believe that people who are just are ready to help and dedicate themselves to a particular or many different services. The school isn’t  instilling that within them it is their own passions and desires. It is what they see for themselves. Community service and research were a key concept in her mission. Xavier provides the students with many research opportunities. They help us go to different ivy league schools and go out of the country to further their studies. Community service is a good thing to do. It is always a good thing to give back to a community or your community.  Xavier provides organizations and clubs that promote and are all bout helping the community for example, Habitat for Humanity. Students give up their saturday mornings to give back. Overall i believe that Saint Katherine Drexel will be happy with the outcome of Xavier.

What role does money play in Farmer’s quest to provide health care? Monday, Oct 11 2010

Money plays a major role in Farmer’s quest to provide health care in Haiti, in particular Cange. Farmer wouldn’t be able to provide the proper care for his patients without the resources, meaning money. Farmer invested his money in earlier projects so he became low in cash. Farmer had doubts if he would be able to get financial help, because he thought that this project would require money beyond what the South Carolinians could provide. Two years before, Farmer had put in a request to a charity named Project Bread for a few thousand dollars,  to build a bread oven in Cange, and received the money.  Farmer had only limited experience as a fund-raiser. (91)

Farmer had a lot of ideas and plans for Cange and didn’t know if he would be able to put out his plans until an anonymous donor named Tom White, who wanted to help Farmer because he is dedicated to his work, and was looking for someone to hang his hat with, donated the thousand dollars that Farmer needed to complete his project. White out of a kind gesture also wanted to build a brand new clinic. Farmer and White spent a lot of  time with each other discussing their decisions for helping Cange and Farmer learned a lot about White. Farmer found out that White owned a heavy-construction firm in Boston and was wealthy. As time goes by White wants to become part of Farmer’s mission and Farmer says in your particular case, that would be a sin.

Farmer at times was unsure that he would be able to fund the projects that he had planned, but Tom White was able to catch him before he fell. At one point Farmer was searching for money. Ultimately, money is a huge factor in Farmers quest to provide health care.

What roles does Farmer’s Catholic heritage play in his work? Does your religious heritage influence your work? Monday, Oct 11 2010

Paul Farmer is a caring, humanitarian, and compassionate person  . He iswilling to help anyone no matter the situation. Being Catholic plays a major role in his work for haiti. He treats everyone the way he would want to be treated, with respect and doesn’t be little the Haitian people for not being wealthy. He treats them all equally. He’s very patient with his patients, he doesn’t blow up or loose control of his anger. He calmly responds and provides care for all his patients. He makes all his patients feel welcomed and being noble has some contribution to his religious background and the way he was brought up.

My religious background has played a major role in my work. Growing up my parents have instilled in me that you can achieve anything through god. That i should treat others the way I would want to be treated; also I should treat everyone with respect. Going to school and living my everyday life, I treat my elders with respect and help my peers with anything that they need help with. As like Farmer I help others that are less fortunate than me. Although I don’t have a job, I go throughout my day keeping a positive attitude and carrying out my religious beliefs. I like to participate in community service projects to give back to the people who need help such as the homeless and orphanage. I helped wrap gifts at my church and sent them to the orphanage. In high school I took the time out to visit the elderly and I performed in a fashion show for a little girl who was diagnosed with cancer. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with some of the tasks that I have to complete and I know that everything will be okay and I can get through it with god being on my side.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Monday, Oct 11 2010

My favorite class at Xavier would be english. The reason why is because it’s a very interesting class. We write essays on topics that are not boring. I don’t like to be forced to write about topics that are not interesting. In my eyes I would not feel like I did my best on writing the paper. In class we have been writing essays on culture and that’s really interesting to me. We have written a descriptive essay on an artist and their album of your choice. We have written a persuasive essay on a movie of our choice. We are currently writing a compare and contrast essay on two television shows of our choice.

Since my class is very small we bonded very well and got to know everyone. I feel like we are a little family. We help each other out and support each other. We each bring our own personality to the class, which makes it very interesting. We don’t put anyone down meaning, we don’t make fun of someone if they don’t know the answer to a simple question. In class we tell jokes read passages from a book that my teacher helped write. We help each other analyze the passages and get help from our teacher when needed. Our teacher keeps us entertained and not bored with his jokes and making sure we understand the material before we move on to the next lesson that he has planned. He is a very good teacher.  Our class rarely has any dull moments only when we have to work on a writing assignment quietly. We learn so much from each other and the teacher. English has not been my favorite subject but since I’ve been here it has grown on me and i enjoy going to my english class.
