Email to Teacher Friday, Dec 11 2009

Dr. Gaudin,

I just wanted to say thank you for this past semester, because you have truly made your class so much more enjoyable for me. I do not give a flying woot about world civilizations. You made the class interesting and tolerable for me. I actually had to pay attention in class, unless I wanted to be called on and have no idea what you were talking about. I liked the group presentation we had to do beacause it was very informative on buddhism. It turns out that we actually share the same views and beliefs. I would not have known half of what I know now if it were not for you. I am reading both of the Earnest Gains books that you gave me along with the King Tut book and the Dharma Wheel book. Needless to say, I will not run out of things to read over my winter break. Thanks once again. I am looking forward to having you as a teacher again next semester.

Senior Interview Friday, Dec 11 2009

Kelsi Brooks,

“I feel that Xavier’s mission is clear in wanting for its students to excel in whatever they are choosing to do. Xavier wants us to be well-rounded individuals who are capable of applying what we learn to real life situations. Many schools just have fancy things as their missions and do not follow through with them, but Xavier is not that way at all. They are actually true to what they say. My journey has not been easy, but it has been very rewarding. I have no regrets about attending Xavier. It is because of the support of my professors that I have settled on becoming an educator myself.”

St. Katherine Drexel Friday, Dec 11 2009

I think that St. Katherine Drexel would be very proud today. It is because of her that African Americans have this Catholic and prestegious university to attend. How can one not be proud when Xavier is number one in the country for placing African Americans into medical school? People are taking this opportunity and bettering themselves with it. I do not know where I would be if  Xavier was not here. This school is a legacy to me and my family. It runs in my blood. Where would I be if not here? I am convinced that one cannot get the type of one-on-one studying with their professors like you can here. I did not even make an appointment. I just went up to my professor’s office and asked for her help. The people here are really out to see us succeed. St. Katherine Drexel would have wanted that. It is not easy here, but at least I know that I am learning and setting a secure future for myself.

What would Barack Obama’s father think of the book? Thursday, Oct 15 2009

I think that Barack Obama’s father would have been pleased with the book overall. Wriying a book is a great accomplishment in general, and his father would have been very proud of him for it.  I know that I would have been proud of my child for writing a book. I also feel that this book would have been a real eye-opener for Barack’s father. It shows how everything he did really did affect Barack in some sense. If I was his father, and I could go back, I would. I would try to correct some of the hostility that was caused. His father would have probably taught him more about his heritage and ancestors. This way, Obama would have many of his questions answered and thoughts eased away. Nonetheless, his father was a very aspiring figure. His father would be so happy and amazed to see what his very own son has accomplished today.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Wednesday, Oct 14 2009

My favorite class here at Xavier is my English Composition class. It is a very interesting and informative class. I like the papers that we write, because they pertain to our majors. The papers are interesting because we are writing about something that we have an interest in. My professor goes over the directons in detail so we know exactly what to do. I like the essays that we read in class because they are not boring. I will actually read the entire thing and then remember what I read. As a class, we have many discussions on various topics. Most of the topics we speak on are generated from the essays we read. Somehow they always branch off to other subjects. Before I know it, the class is over. This is one class I truly do not mind having three days a week. I am not too happy with it being at 8 o’clock in the morning, but once I step outside I am good.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Wednesday, Oct 14 2009

Poverty has made people and the communities come together in some aspects. When they see poverty, it motivates some to help, maybe give back to the community or something along those lines. Poverty is not exactly something that helps a place or the people. Problems like that have a tendency to create drama and discrepancies in places and among the people. Poverty has hurt New Orleans in that it makes the crime and death rates go up. People are angry. Some are desperate. When the people are on edge, any little thing can set them off. Poverty is not something that goes away the next day. You can’t just wake up and be wealthy. It is a lifestyle. People live in poverty. The more poverty in an area, the less attractive it becomes. New Orleans will always have poverty, but it has so many unique aspects that makes it so attractive. The poverty in New Orleans is a problem that is still today trying to be delt with.

What type of leadership skills do you possess? Wednesday, Oct 14 2009

I am a well-rounded individual, which is a big factor in being a leader. I have the ability to listen to what others have to say instead of talking and directing all the time. “Listen” and “silent” are spelled with the same letters. I know how to look at things from different perspectives and ask open-ended questions. I have many personal experiences that make it easy for me to relate to different situations. I like to interact with people and am very easy to talk to. As a leader, you should be able to follow as well as lead. That does not mean to always stay in someone elses shadow. I know how to follow, learn, and apply these things to better myself along with others. It makes me a good role model to many, especially my siblings. I want them to follow in my footsteps now so when they get older, they can start their own paths as leaders.

What are your professional plans, and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Wednesday, Oct 14 2009

plan to graduate from Xavier’s undergrad program and go on to Tulane University for medical school. I ultimately want to become  a neurosurgeon and set up a private practice somewhere other than Louisiana. I would love to become chief surgeon wherever I start out at. Xavier’s mission affects this because they want to make us well-rounded individuals who can assume leadership leadership roles. In the profession that I want to go into, these skills and characteristics will work to my advantage. Xavier will also teach me how to service my society, which is what my profession deals with. I want to do it in a humane and just way. Xavier is here to make us the best we can possibly be. They are here to give us our first push and a guiding hand along the way. They will help us to decide if this is the profession we truly want to go in, and if not, then what we would like or interest us. The fact that they keep track of everything we do keeps us up with our work.

Why did you choose to come to Xavier? Wednesday, Oct 14 2009

I chose to come to Xavier because it is a family school and has an excellent medical program. My mother, father, aunts, uncles, and cousins all came and graduated from here. They have told me about how it is a wonderful school, and the people are really here to help and see you succeed. I am not too big on living in New Orleans because I prefer the country, but I have always loved the jazz scene here. That alone was another plus on coming to Xavier. I plan on becoming a neurosurgeon, and Xavier has the highest rate of placing African American students into medical school. This gives me a better chance of succeeding. The fact that Xavier is a small school aslo affected my choice, because I do not want to be just another number to my professors. My teachers know my name. It gives us a chance to know each other on a personal level. I also have the opportunity to go study with them if I need help.
