What is my favorite class and why Friday, Oct 24 2008

My History 1031H course with Sister Hughes is by far my favorite. Don’t get me wrong, I’m often very close to falling asleep in the class, along with everyone else, but when I am solidly awake, I find the material very interesting. Its not really her fault though, there is something about that room that makes everyone just fall asleep.

History is definitely a passion of mine. I’ve always found it the most interesting; I guess that is why I’m currently a History major. (One of two in the freshman class). In high school, I took history electives like Ancient Greek mythology and philosophies, and other dorky stuff like Latin for 3 years, and Greek for 1. I don’t really know why I like it, I just do. Besides shooters, I always play strategy games usually taking place during Roman times, or the middle ages. Again, its just how i’m made up.

If I had to give a definitive reason of why I like my History class the most, I would say it is because I enjoy dissecting the lives of prominent figures of the past. Not only that, the whole “Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it” line. Its fun to learn about different cultures in my opinion, and if you have a good teacher (Sister Hughes definitely is), you can get a real rewarding experience. After only a few weeks, I really think i’m going to enjoy her class for the next semester and half. Hopefully next year’s professor is as good.

My professional plans Friday, Oct 24 2008

Everyone always seems to ask, “What do you want to do when you leave college?” Most of the time I get annoyed. Its not that I’m mad at them, its just that I don’t really know. Right now, my major is History, but I don’t exactly know what I can do with a degree in History that I like. I’ve thought about switching to Education in Social Studies, but I really don’t know.

For some strange reason, people always say I should become a politician. As a matter of fact, a couple of guys and I were talking about politics yesterday, and I got the same line. I don’t know if that is a compliment or not; politicians tend to be some of the most slimiest, greediest, dishonest people out there, but I guess they mean it as a positive. I don’t think I could see myself as one, I’m not really sure I have the killer instinct required. I guess that leads me into what I can see myself doing for a living.

During high school, we were required to complete 200 hours of community service over the course of 4 years, (Or 40 hours a year). I took up teaching religious education to (6th graders my first year, 7th, and then 5th the next). I guess that is why I want to change to Education, I really like interacting with students (preferably older than 6th or 7th graders though… maybe high school). And I could see myself as a teacher.

How does Xavier’s Mission affect that? Well.. They do have it as a possible degree, so there you go!

Why did I choose Xavier? Friday, Oct 24 2008

During the fall of my Senior year in high school, I had planed on going to college closer to home in Nasvhille, rather it be Belmont University, or Libscomb, or Vanderbilt. My 8th grade principal, whom left St.Vincent (my grade school) to run a newly repaired school damaged by Hurricane Katrina, asked if I had made my decision on where I wanted to go for college. I gave the typical answer many students give. “I’m applying to several schools, but I am going to keep my options open.” She then proceeded to poke and prod more and more. After a few minutes, she mentioned Xavier Louisiana, and gave me a strong pitch. “Its a fine school, you’d love it, great place for to develop…” etc. If I hadn’t known any better, I would have thought she was the admissions director for Xavier.

As a result of her magnificent pitch, I added Xavier to a number of colleges that I would apply to. It turns out, I wanted to go to college out of state, I just hadn’t realized it yet. After I was accepted sometime in January, I decided to have a visit and get a quick tour of the school. I liked the campus, and had just about made up my mind to go to school out of state. Everything was finally coming together.

Now that i’m here, I realize I miss Nashville, but it really does feel relaxing to know that I’m out on my own, experiencing life without my family for the first time in my life. I guess that is what it really came down to.
