When I was young I used to ask my elders this question all the time. “What happens to people when they go away?” They would never tell me the answer; I guess they thought I was too young to understand this process. Dying is something that makes me sad, and something that I rarely want to talk about. But everyone has to face reality, and eventually everyone has to die at some point. From then on they can live their life in Heaven as I mentioned in the first blog. Dying isn’t necessarily a bad thing but everyone seems to be frightened by it including me, I must say. It’s something that makes me depressed. In my opinion people who live a good life wind up going to live happily in Heaven, and people who do bad things on earth end up going to Hell. I was taught that Hell was a place where people burn for all the bad things that they have done and all the sins they have committed. I am a strong believer in treating everyone equally and always being loyal and kind to everyone. It’s important to do unto others as they have done to you. I live this rule everyday and I will say that this is a true statement that everyone should repeat in their minds daily. Being a Christian or any religion isn’t about going to church or going to that special mass every Sunday it’s about praying and believing in your faith. Death is in the unknown…
Xaviers Mission Sunday, Mar 8 2009
Week Four 2:24 pm
While walking to Xavier South, I interviewed a girl named Ashley who is a junior at Xavier. I asked her about Xavier’s mission and her view on the university. She said she had been at Xavier for three years and it gave her a good academic foundation so far that is preparing her for her career as a marine biologist. She also stated that Xavier’s mission is to prepare young African Americans to get into the best medical schools and give them the best education as possible. In her opinion she thinks Xavier is doing a good job of that so far. She had a very good outlook on Xavier and said nothing negative about the school. Right now she is focusing on getting out, and getting a job to support her. She also explained to me how Xavier helps you grow as a person meaning that it has taught her to grow up and be self sufficient. She doesn’t need anyone to help her and Xavier has taught her that. Now she knows about the Catholic religion and goes to mass every Sunday. This schools mission helped her with her schooling and religious aspects of her life. She is a better person because of Xavier’s mission. Many other students will probably say the same thing if I ask them this question but now everyone knows how Ashley feels! Hopefully I will make it to be a junior at Xavier and I will get to say the things she said in our interview.
Heaven…. Sunday, Mar 8 2009
Week Two 2:06 pm
Heaven is a touchy topic for some people, but for me Heaven is a peaceful and humane place. When I think of Heaven I start to picture Jesus and people who all get along. I think after one’s life is over he/she goes to heaven and their life starts over again. I think everyone begins a clean slate when they enter the gates of Heaven. It’s a place where one can forget about their past and begin to change their life! It is not necessarily a bad place even though folks in your previous life may miss you, or they may be sad. Soon they will realize that heaven gave their friend or family the opportunity to remake that person. I do think that heaven promotes a just in humane society. Heaven is simply a place where people can enjoy themselves in a new life and not have to worry about the dangers and horror of the big bad world. Living on earth can be horrifying at times when you think of all the murder and crimes that happen. Especially living in New Orleans, the murder rate is crazy! Sometimes people are in a better place when they go to heaven because of all that’s going on in the world. Heaven is where people hold hands, everyone smiles and gets along, and everyone wants the best for each other. To know that people can be happy in heaven is enough said. I have a great view on this after life and I think these opinions and values should be promoted.

The Most Memorable Funeral Sunday, Mar 8 2009
Week One 1:52 pm
I remember when I was twelve years old and my grandmother died. It was a really detrimental moment in my life and it was a funeral I will never forget. My grandmother raised me and took care of me and at this point in time I did not know what to do. The funeral was a typical New Orleans funeral that took place at Rhodes Funeral Home. There were Jazz players at the funeral and old New Orleanin songs that were played. My grandmother loved New Orleans and always loved its culture and spirit. All the people at the funeral were sad for a moment then they rejoiced. In New Orleans funerals are all about being happy that the person is in a better place. They are going on to their new life to Heaven. Family, and friends were at the funeral singing and dancing for joy as they went up to look at my grandmother in her casket. It was sad and happy all in one bundle. My grandmothers funeral was somewhat dull in the sense that it wasn’t to the extreme. Usually funerals in New Orleans have actual Jazz Bands and they sing songs and hymn spirital tunes. New Orleans funerals are one of a kind and bring back smiling faces on the people of New Orleans!
St. Katherine Drexels Feelings…. Friday, Dec 12 2008
Week Six 3:25 pm
Katherine Drexel was born in November 26, 1858. She was also the second recognized American born saint. She was an advocate for racial tolerance. In some ways I do think she would be pleased with the students here at Xavier because it promotes African Americans to get a higher education. So many Blacks are not in school and don’t want to do anything with their life. By African American students coming to Xavier and actually being interested in school is a big plus and we all owe that to St. Katherine Drexel for building us Xavier University. A place where African Americans were always welcome and a place where one can get the best education ever! So In one way I do think St. Katherine Drexel would be pleased. But on the other hand, some students just come to Xavier and waste their parent’s money. They come to play around and they aren’t really serious about their education. They eventually fall behind and this is unfortunately what happens to a lot of freshman, but not me! I am trying the best I can to stay focused and go to class everyday! Education is important and St. Katherine Drexel worked so hard for African Americans to get to where they are right now. In fact a lot of people pushed for what African Americans have right now, and that’s why I take nothing for granted. So she promoted success for African Americans and overall I think Xavier University is doing a good job promoting St. Katherine Drexel’s dream.
The Best Mardi Gras Experience Friday, Dec 12 2008
Week Five 3:25 pm
Mardi gras is really not a huge deal to me, because I see it every year. I am from New Orleans and I know how excited tourist get when they see the decorative faces, the colorful beads, and the beautiful coconuts…but I feel like Mardi Gras just isn’t the same anymore. But back to the topic…when I was about eleven years old I had the most exciting and eventful Mardi Gras experience in my life. I had lots of fun because I went with my Girl Scout troop. We were down by city hall watching the mayor ride the horse and watching Rex and indemian..etc. All of us had lots of fun! I raised my hands in the air screaming the saying “Ay Mr. throw me some beads”. I caught the most beads out of all my friends, and they were quite jealous. When our troop left city hall, we went uptown on St. Charles Avenue. This is where all the action is. Everyone was wild, and jolly, and drunk! Some girls were exposed, and some men were falling on the ground because they were so drunk! This was a site to see, being I was only eleven years old. So we sat through one more parade, and after this we just watched the scene. After the parade there were beads all over the ground, bear cans everywhere, and it just looked a mess. But I guess in the end it was all worth it because the whole city of New Orleans seemed to have fun and everyone smiles after getting all of those beads!

My Favorite Class at Xavier is…. Friday, Dec 12 2008
Week Three 3:23 pm
Well when I first came to Xavier in August I thought my favorite class was going to be psychology, because it was my major. However, this is not the case. I really like my english 1010 class because we focus on writing and I love to write poetry. Psychology is a subject based upon theories, observation, and concluding information. I mean thats fine and dandy but I like to write! So therefore, english is indeed my favorite subject so far. I have learned so much in the last three months i’ve been here. When writing papers I tend to bounce around from idea to idea and this class has helped me so much. Now I can develop one topic sentence and have like six sentences of supporting details. Xavier also has the writing center, which helps students to write well and tell them what they need to work on. I have been to the writing center two times before, and I definitely recommend this to anybody having trouble with their writing skills. The whole point of english 1010 is for students to learn how to develop a central purpose, and learn structure when writing their papers. So far, I think I have done a good job with accepting this concept and running with it. Before I came to Xavier i thought I was an excellent writer, but I received a C on my first paper, and I was not too thrilled. But I could not let that get me down, so I asked my teacher what was it i needed to do to receive an A. She gave me advice…”just look at my comments, or go to the writing center”…so I did that. I feel as though I am a better writer because of this class…and yes this is my favorite class!
My professional Plans and How Xavier’s misson affects it. Friday, Dec 12 2008
Week Two 3:22 pm
My plan in life is to become a psychiatrist. I want have my own practice in the future and be successful. I know that Xavier will prepare me for my career plans and my aspirations in life. The whole purpose of going to Xavier, or any college for that matter is to become a well rounded person. Xavier’s mission is to teach students how to me social, and an active learner. Social, meaning learning how to interact with people, being interested in their values in life, and learning about different kinds of people. Xavier has this environment and inspires me to do well in the future.
Xavier also wants students to be strong writers. Even my English teacher said most jobs right now want people who can write well. It’s all about just being able to put a sentence together. This tells the people on the job that you can speak and write well. This is why Xavier offers public speaking and has English 1010. English 1010 helps students to for complete ideas, and cultivate an excitement for writing! So the reason why I am speaking of writing and its importance is because my field, psychology is all about evaluating information and writing about it. I also spoke of speaking well earlier, this is also important in the field of psychology. One must be able to look at something, make a hypothesis about the topic, report it, analyze it, and speak of it to an audience. So basically to wrap this all up, Xavier prepares students to be well rounded individuals!
