What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Thursday, Dec 11 2008

I would have to say my favorite class is surprisingly English Composition & Rhetoric. In high school I hated english because I never really understood what the teacher was explaining to me. Now the teacher explains well and ties the english around what is going on in society today. Because of that it is easier to focus and fully understand what I am writing, reading, and discussing. Also another reason I enjoy English Comp. & Rhet. is because we have class dicussions that focus on college life, politics, and other issues and problems going on in the world today. I also enjoy my teacher Professor Frank Perez. He is a man who seems to understand us young adults and he is very easy to relate to. He makes everything seem much easier and makes me feel that every assignment is easier than the last. I also enjoy Freshman Seminar. Not only because Dr. Michael Homan is the teacher, it is also because we talk about life issues and political issues. These classes are so similiar and that is what makes me enjoy them the most. I especially enjoy classes that lets me express issues going on in the world, even though in both classes I never speak. It is like in both classes I can drift away, relax, and be myself. These classes also keep me up to date with issues that I sometimes do not pay attention to and that I were not interested in. Now it is always on my mind and it helps me to understand today’s world problems…

Do you think Katherine Drexel would be happy with Xavier today? Why or why not? Thursday, Nov 13 2008

Upon my research Katherine Drexel would somewhat be pleased with Xavier University today. Sis Drexel dedicated her life the better the lives of Native Americans “Indians” and African Americans “Colored people”… She financed over 60 missions and schools around the United States especially for the education of Native Americans and African Americans. Because she was so faithful and selfless she was recognized by Pope John Paul II to become the only second recognized American-born saint. Her actions were inspired by poverty among Native Americans and the lives of African Americans. In some ways Katherine Drexel would be very well pleased but on the same note she would also be somewhat confused. Some students wear and represent the name of Xavier very well while others wear it and there is always a wandering question of why. Katherine Drexel has truly set up a great educational environment for minorities. Some things could be greatly improved but overall I believe Katherine Drexel would be pleased with Xavier as a whole. Not only for the help she has given help to minorities but also for the way it has continued on throughout the years and the fact that it is doing very well as it was before.

My favorite Mardi Gras experience… Thursday, Nov 13 2008

To be completely honest…I do not have a favorite Mardi Gras experience. I am a born native of New Orleans and every since I can remember I have experienced the greatest time of the year, MARDI GRAS…! Every experience was one to remember and they would all be considered as my favorites. But if I absolutely had to choose a favorite it would be Mardi Gras 2008, which was this year. This year I attended Mardi Gras with my older sister and four of her college friends and I was accompanied by my bestie BJ. I had so much fun because my sister and I had the chance to show them what Mardi Gras and New Orleans was like since they had never been here plus I got to spend time with college students :) . It was a week full of fun. Mardi Gras morning everyone got up ready to have fun. All of us got a quick breakfast and packed into two cars. Finally when we found a parking spot we walked three blocks to meet my dad because he has his own section with barbeque, family, music, and fun. That day, just like all of my other Mardi Gras experiences, will never be forgotten. I absolutely love Mardi Gras.

What are your professional plans & how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Thursday, Oct 23 2008

First of all my plan is to graduate from Xavier…upon graduation I plan on attending a medical school located in Georgia. My professional plans are to have a career as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Xavier’s mission states that the promotion of a more just and humane society prepares its students for the roles of leadership and service in today’s society. Since are my goals are to be in the medical field, this mission will help me greatly. I am quite sure Xavier’s mission will help me in the field I plan on going into. It will better me as a leader and in my services as a leader. Xavier’s mission also will help me in my everyday studies. Xavier has many programs that helps the students when they are in need. There are always tutoring centers you can visit daily, study sessions going on, the teachers are always available through email or appointment, and the councelors are always nice and ready to help. When I see this type of leadership and service provided by the teachers and students, I automatically notice that I am in the correct place. It is now only up to the students to take this help into consideration. The transition from high school to college was different and difficult. Xavier is just a block that I need to get over and then this college life and mission will be easier to live. Maybe later on I will fully accept this transition and hopefully Xavier’s mission will push me forward to be a true leader.

Who do you think will make a great political leader & why? Thursday, Oct 23 2008

I honestly was not very interested in politics until I was in high school during the end of my 11th grade year. when I did become interested I personally hated the president (hopefully no one will take offence to this). Now that I am interested I personally think that Barack Obama will make a great political leader. I am a registered Democratic voter and my plans are to vote for Obama president. BARACK THE VOTE!!! I think Obama would be a great leader because he is honest, stable, and willing and better able to make a better United States. In society today many “leaders” are elected for certain positions and are not very effective and do not have very good leadership skills. A leader, as well as a political leader, must have a very strong and well rounded mind and I think that Obama possesses these skills. I think that Obama has a really good and effective plan that would help change and make the United States a better place to stay. He gives me and my family something to look forward to and something to be happy about. Sometimes people do not tie in politics with religion, but since he is a true God believer that gives me all the more reason to believe that he will be a very effective leader. By chosing Obama for president and believing he will make a great political leader, gives me hope as a college student, as a growing adult, and as a medical leader that I plan to be and hopefully my future will be better than it is now.

Advantages and Disadvantages of poverty in New Orleans… Thursday, Oct 23 2008

I would not necessarily say that poverty has advantaged New Orleans…Its is more of a downfall of the city. Poverty has made the city pause in its greatness and glow. Because of poverty, the lower class citizens of New Orleans has become more less honest and socially responsible. Since Hurricane Katrina, poverty has displaced people from their homes because they were not financially able to rebuild their homes.  Poverty has also effected the school system…schools now are not open, they have too less books, or they are not teaching the correct curriculum which is a disadvantage for the future. New Orleans is not financially able itself to help anyone else. Another disadvantage of poverty is the lack of jobs for the people who actually need them. That makes the city even less populated and less enjoyable. A few advantages of poverty is that it opened the eyes of several New Orleanians. It made people believe and know that they finally had to work hard for what they really needed in life and to work even harder for what they wanted. It also gave New Orleanians the opportunity to actually appreciate their culture and the well being of New Orleans. Even though it is less populated the New Orleans citizens still seem to have a good time with what they have and focus less on what they had or could have. Before poverty some people never worked and lived off of foodstamps, welfare, and WIC. Now because the government is not really focused on the “little people” it is some what forcing people to work even when work has almost vanished.

Why I chose to attend Xavier… Thursday, Oct 23 2008

First of all New Orleans is my home, I was born here and lived here the first half of my life…that is one reason I decided to choose Xavier. When I had to move to MS with my grandparents I felt that I leaving a part of me behind. From my house in New Orleans, I could a building with Xavier University on it. From then on I was determined to make Xavier the school I further my education… Also, Xavier is known to be number one for putting minorities, like me, into medical school and since I had always dreamt of working in the medical field, I knew this was it…When i graduated from high school I knew I had to come back home. Another reason I chose Xavier is because I know I am not too far from my dad who stays on the Westbank and only a few hundred miles from my home in MS especially by my grandmother. I also like the way Xavier pushes me to work for myself…I have to actually make my own way to the top. In high school, I had the help of my teachers and peers but here I am kind of on my own and I have learned to work harder. Xavier was my 1st choice since 9th grade and now I am very happy that I chose such a wonderful school. Since I have I have decided to attend a wonderful school, I plan on staying here for my full 4 years of my college career.
