What would Katherine Drexel think? Friday, Dec 11 2009

According to Wikipedia, “Katharine dedicated her life and inheritance to the needs of oppressed Native Americans and Blacks in the West and Southwest United States, and was a vocal advocate of racial tolerance. To address racial injustice and destitution and spread the Gospel to these groups, Katharine established a religious order, the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People. Because Katharine felt a universal need for education, especially among Blacks and Native Americans, she financed more than 60 missions and schools around the United States.”

By knowing these facts I think she would be very proud of Xavier because it has made great strides in the minority community. Xavier University is by passing people expectations and going a step further and beyond. I thing she would have been amazed at how diverse the school has become. Overall she would be happy just seeing people in school and trying to better themselves, no matter what color.

Letter to My Favorite Professor Friday, Dec 11 2009

Dear Dr. Wesselman,

I am emailing you today to commend you the good job you did this semester. Many professors have tried to do what you did and they couldn’t. They tried to connect with their students and hope they understand how to succeed in college.

I have learned many of things in your class, such as understand professor and why they do things. I also learned that not everyone is strictly business, but you need a balance between business and fun. That is what I did in your class; that’s why I passed your class.

Overall your class was very time consuming but it was all worth it. Never giving up on your group and sticking with the project until the end. I commend you for helping me along with my higher learning even when I didn’t want help. I hope you continue helping students

From,

Jhamal D.

Favorite class Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I have so many fun classes but my favorite would have to be Engineering Graphics. Engineering Graphics is a class that teaches me how to use a program called Auto-Cad. It was it easy when I first started to do the work but as the weeks went on it has gotten harder. We have no homework. We go through a chapter per week and basically that’s it. We also get to leave early if we finish early but 9 out of 10 times, we will leave on time; because the work is so hard. During the we are in this class, we get to act how we want to act such as cracking jokes, conversing between student, and other things. We do our work and have fun at the same time. I need this for my major and by learning in a good, fun environment will help me enjoy it even more.

Poverty Sunday, Oct 11 2009

Poverty is a touchy subject, when talking about New Orleans especially after Katrina. A lot of New Orleaians are in poverty but most are just plain poor people. Majority of the country doesn’t care about New Orleans because of its high poverty rate. They mistreat us, abuse us, and want to leave us for dead. People only think about us during Mardi Gras or big events but as far as everyday life, we are on our own. Why are we so unwanted? Because a lot of poor people. People are poor because of the lack of education, low wages with high expenses, and lack of jobs. This is how poverty hurts New Orleans. It is also one of the reasons that the nation doesn’t want to rebuild New Orleans. And as far as benefits go, I don’t see any at all. All I see is the struggle it brings New Orleans.

leadership skills Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I possess many different types of leadership skills, which makes me a good leader. People flock to me and look to me for guidance or I just step up and take leadership of a group. They take more to me after they see my polite attitude and how I lead by example. I have the ability to see trouble and what can cause trouble and avoid it. It comes in handily when I’m apart of group of people or if I am in charge of a group of people, I can see which way to go and/or how to be successful. I can smooth talk my way out of trouble. This helps me calm people down and persuade them to understand my side of the story. Overall I would say that I am good leader with many different types of skills, and I have the ability to lead people in to success.

What are your professional plans? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

My Majors, Civil Engineering and Physics, builds and promote a more just and humane society by giving us the tools we need to succeed and become leaders. My fields are very unique in away, Xavier University of Louisiana, that many others are not. It gives me two degrees and minor because it is a dual degree program. Plus I graduate from two schools. With all this experience that I will receive, I will be able to service my community as best as I can to make it better. With the combination of Civil Engineering and Physics, I believe that we are making the world safer than what it once was. By understanding how things move and how fast they can become unsafe; plus being able to build and design civil used things, we, civil engineers, will make society can better for the future. In this future, our children will live in a just and humane world, where they will no longer live in fear. I also think the majors, I have, given you the building blocks of the house of a just and humane society.

Why did you choose to come to Xavier? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I came to Xavier fir many reasons. I like its location because I live 10 to 15 minutes away from the school. With this short distance between my future Alma and my home, I spent many of summers her. During these summers, I was a part of many science programs. This is where I came to decide my majors, civil engineering and physics. That is also when I found I could get two majors, a minor, and I could graduate from two schools. This is when I had made the decision to come to Xavier from my schooling. Then I talked with family members, who have attended Xavier. Though these conversions I found out that many more family members when to Xavier and enjoyed the experience there. That is when I realized that this was the school for me; that there is no other place like Xavier University of Louisiana.
