What are your thoughts about Xavier and its mission after your first semester?

My thoughts about Xavier and it’s mission after my first semester are that the faculty really lives up to the mission statement. Being successful is not going to be given to you, and that you have to work really hard in order to be successful. College is the complete opposite of high school and you have to actually study, and do not just memorize the material for a specific time because you will need to know that stuff throughout the whole year. In high school, I could get by with not studying for a test and recovering from a bad grade. That is the complete opposite of college. I’ll admit that I didn’t strive as hard to do my best but next semester I plan to have a complete turn around and do better than I did this semester.

What did you think of the book Fast Food Nation?

Whenever I first recieved Fast Food Nation in the mail, I thought the book was going to be extremely boring and I planned on reading a little bit everyday so that I would not end up having to read the whole thing at the last minute. Once I started reading it, it was really boring to me so I stopped reading it for a month in a half then i resumed and stopped reading it again. The second time whenever I began to read it again, it was more interesting to me. I did not read the whole book, just pieces of it or whatever was required for me to read. From the pieces that I’ve read, those parts were actually good. Although those parts were actually good, I still would have rather read a smaller book though. I felt like this book also taught and brought awareness to certain issues throughout the fast food world which was very helpful and informative.

How do automobiles and interstates play a role in spreading the fast food culture?

Automobiles and interstates play an important role in today’s society. First they both allow people to travel and get from place to place fastly compared to riding bikes and taking streets. The interstates have higher speeds, more lanes, and no red lights compared to streets. They also allow the travel of 18 wheelers which some streets doesn’t allow. They both play a role in spreading fast food by them allowing the travel of food from place to place. Most food has to travel on 18 wheelers since there is a lot of the stock. Interstates makes this easy because all of the stock can fit onto that one 18 wheeler instead of traveling back and forth to get the stock back to that place. Automobiles and interstates just save time and money for fast food chains.

Interview a Xaxier senior about his/her thoughts on Xavier’s mission and blog about what they say

I do not know that many seniors at Xavier but the few that I know are on the sports team. So I interviewed a senior that’s on one of the sports team. They told me that: “Xavier is a great school, and will get you where you want to go in life if you do the hard part which is the work. Always study, manage your time wisely, and use the tutoring labs especially since they are free. It’s not easy but it can be done, and has been done. College is the complete opposite of high school and the only way that you won’t be successful is because of your own self, not anyone else. The mission statement is a good example what Xavier teaches and expects of it’s students.”

Week 10 Wednesday, Oct 19 2011

Send and email to your favorite teacher at Xavier thanking them for their work and post the text of the email in your blog.

Dear Dr. Johanson,

I would like to thank you so much for all of your help in Chemistry Lab. This class is going better than I expected, and I have not been stressed about this class yet. I thought this class was hard, and that we would be writing lab reports after each lab which I see that we are not doing. Chemistry is not my best subject but you make easy to understand like it is my strong subject. Again thanks a lot for making my chemistry lab experience a lot easier than what I planned.

Sincerely,

Jessica Savanna

Do some research on Katherine Drexel. Do you think she would be happy with Xavier today? Why or why not?

Saint Katherine Drexel was born Novemeber 26, 1858, and died March 3, 1955. She was born in Philadelphia, and was a philanthropist and educator. Sister Katherine Drexel advocated for many Native Americans and African Americans. Sister Katherine Drexel had many contributions throughout her lifetime, also including the foundation for Xavier University. She started something that was unlike no other. Xavier University is the only historically black, Catholic university in the world. Xavier is also number one for placing African Amercians into medical school. I think Sister Katherine Drexel would be extremely proud that we are living up to her mission statement. She started something that was extremely good, and we’re showing our thanks to her by keeping up with our studies & the majority of us are being accepted into medical school.

Does the author have a political agenda? Give examples to support your claim.

I do believe that Schlossar has a political agenda. I believe this because the title of the book alone implies that he has a politcal agenda. Schlossar isn’t bashing any of the fast food giants, he is just making people aware of what these large corporations are doing. People eat fast foods because it is more convient, a lot of times its inexpensive, and doesn’t require the buyer to cook. In the book, Sclossar discusses the issues of workers being mistreated, how corportations mistreat their workers, and certain things that they put in foods that are not supposed to be in foods. Of course, you would not expect this to happen, but it does happen. Schlossar isn’t telling people not to eat fast foods, he is just making people aware of what the fast food corporations are doing.  I also believe that Schossar does not fully believe in the fast food industry because of the ways that some mistreat their workers, and the stuff that many of the corporations put into the foods.

Week 6 Friday, Sep 30 2011

In the readings for last week, Schlosser writes about a man named Kenny. Write about someone you know who has suffered parallel misfortunes.

In Fast Food Nation, chapter 8, Schlosser talks about a man named Kenny Dobbins. Kenny began working in the meat packing plant at a young age, and worked there over sixteen years. While working at the meat processing plant, Kenny suffered many injuries and was a commited worker. However, his employers tried to do everything to make him quit. Kenny did not think this and continued to work there although he suffered many injuries.

I have an older cousin back in my hometown of Shreveport that has one eye. Although she is grown, she has the mindset of a young child. Many of my younger cousins are confused and find it strange that she has only eye so they always ask her whats wrong with her eye or tease her whenever she gets on their nerves. My parents taught me to never tease people that are different so I understood her having one eye. A younger child may be scared of her, but my sis and I were not scared of her whenever we first met her as younger kids. She was just like any of my other cousins and kids that I’ve played with. She just wanted to hang with us and have fun with us which was cool with me. My cousin does not let this stop her from doing anything, in fact sometimes I dont think she even realizes that she has one eye. She also has a positive outlook on life compared to some other people.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why?

My favorite class at Xavier is Biology. Biology is my favorite class because this is my major, and so far it has been easy for me to understand. The work load is not hetic and we barely have homework. There is homework but its optional. This is good because I feel that this will help determine if you succeed of fail in that class. The professor is also really cool too. She is young and basically around our generation even though she may be a little bit older. She also makes sure that we understand the material that she is teaching. Some days she lets us out of class early, which I like also. One con of this biology class is that after a certain amount of time, there is not anywhere to sit since the class is full. Some students must either stand or sit on the floor. I refuse to stand or sit on the hard floor for a class period so I get to class about ten to fifteen minutes early. So far this is working out good for me. Most of the stuff that we are learning is a review for me. I can’t wait until we get further into the semester and get into the more interesting stuff. Hopefully this will continue to be my favorite class as the semester goes along.

Week 4 Friday, Sep 16 2011

How did Sinclair’s The Jungle (1906) dramatically change the food industry? Will this book Fast Food Nation do the same? Why or why not?

Sinclair’s The Jungle changed the food industry because it established the FDA and made the FDA have food regulations. This book talked about many workers working in a meat processing factory, and that many workers were getting injured while in the factory. Some of their body parts were crushed in the machines, and were processed in the foods that we eat. The factory workers weren’t doing anything about this or reporting this. Word got out, and President Kennedy set up regulations for this. I do not see how the factory owners were letting this happen and then selling this to people. Their family members could have bought this and either died or became sick. I do not think Fast Food Nation will do the same thing because the food has become irrestible. Many older people call our generation the “I” generation because our generation is selfish. We like to do what we want whenever we want. Fast foods and lack of excerise cause obesity. I feel like we began to worry about obesity and fast foods a little to late. Nobody wants to eat healthy because it does not taste right. Because of this, many people choose fast foods.
