Dear Mrs.K. Campbell

Reading Comprehension

This semester i have learned a great deal because of you. Many things I already knew but your stratagies were very helpful to my other classes. You made things very understandable.Hopefully i will pass the final exam and move one to other college courses that are also required.

                                                                                                      Thanks,

                                                                                                            Jazmin Randall

Katherine Drexel Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

Katharine Drexel was always a woman of intense prayer.Katharine combined prayerful and total dependence on Divine Providence with determined activism. Her obstacles  facilitated advances for social justice. She did not hesitate to speak out against injustice, taking a public stance when racial discrimination was in evidence. After researching Katherine Drexel I believe she would be happy with Xavier today. This school is one of the best schools for pharmacy and a great school for blacks who want to study in the medical field. Xavier also hosts a number of  humanitarian events and gives back to the community in a great way. We are also currently expanding our campus which is a great thing.

What would Barack Obama’s father think of the book? Monday, Oct 12 2009

Dreams form my father is a book that is all about race and equality.  I think Barack  expresses his true feelings about his father and about his childhood life growing. This book shows when Barack was younger he was very ashamed of his father and what his father stood for.  I think his father would be hurt to see how obama portrayed him and what he thought of him, but overall his father would be proud that his son has grown into a smart powerful man.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Monday, Oct 12 2009

When i think of poverty i think of my city. Sad to say New Orleans is known for many bad things including poverty. It seems like every time you turn on the news you see negativity about this city. Nothing ever gets soved in our city because the people in charge are corrupt. How can we stop poverty when our own city officials are stealing our tax dollars. You would think officials stop and think about the community but they dont ,they put SELf first. This is a huge reason our city is full of poverty. We cant point the finger at any one because this has been going on far too long now. To me it seems as though the rich get richer and the poor get poorer here. And because of the high poverty rate comes crime. We are known as the murder capital and this is the only way poverty has benefited New Orleans. Poverty brought publicity and when people and media come here they publicize our horrible way of life. After Hurricane Katrina many people got an insicde scoop of what really went on here and now i can say we have some help; a head start at jobs and homes and more business in the city.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Monday, Oct 12 2009

My favorite class at xavier would have to be mass communications. By this being my major i think it is better for me to have interest in this subject because i would like to become a news broadcastor one day. This class is very different from other classes because i think it benefits me more than the other classes i curently take. The only difficult thing about class is the reading. We must read the chapter before arriving in class and this can be difficult because most of the chapters in the book are very long and you are required to take a quiz on random questions in the reading. I also think this class is more of a class that discusses things and not just a lecture. We also have a class called super reader. This is when a group of people get together in class and teach the class for the day and they have to go beyond the book and use whatever they want to teach for that day.

What type of leadership skills do you posess? Monday, Oct 12 2009

A leader is a person who can guide people in the right direction. A person who can take a stand, a reliable person you can go to in time of need. I think i posess all of these leadership skills. I am a person who can take control of any situation and I am always there for others. When I am given a task to complete I always make sure it is done to the best of my ability. This is what a leader is. I also think a leader is a normal person who has to overcome trials and tribulations but they get through their problems. Leaders dont have to be perfect people, just people who want to be different and rise above struggles. When people think of leaders they think of people who are perfect and who have money and power, but in some cases leaders can be hard working people in your community trying to set a good example or people who do small things like coach a football team at the neighborhood park.

What are your professional plans and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Monday, Oct 12 2009

The mission of  XU  is to promote a more just and humane society. My major is mass communications;broadcasting and i would like to minor in biology in hopes of becomming a dentist in the future. I think this mission statement affects my plans in a major way. I plan to live in metro New Orleans and opefully get a job as a news brodcastor. This is a good example of  becomming a big part of society because most news reporters are very active in the community and thats what I plan to do. In my career i plan to report news and find solutions to make New Orleans a better place for everyone. Therefore I think Xaviers mission statement will help me and the school will teach me how to become a better human being so I can make society a better place in the future. One day after graduation i want to be able to give back to my community and by going here it would help me do that.

Why did you choose to come to Xavier? Monday, Oct 12 2009

I chose to come to Xavier Universty for a number of reasons. XU is a Black Catholic  college that is not very large and is more helpful to minority students. I also think this university focuses on academics and tries to help students suceed. Another reason i chose Xavier is that is is very close to home and i was scared to leave home my first year. THe last reason i chose Xavier is because i wanted to join there cheerleading squad. As the time goes by i begin to like this school even more. The only things i have a major problem with is the limited student parking lots for students and the small amount of time we are expected to get to class everyday. I think this school wants to see its students suceed and they offer alll kinds of tutoring and help. At Xavvier I think you are considered a person not just a number.
