Blog 6 (QEP 4): What is the purpose of the feasts described in Daniel? How do ancient feasts compare to modern St. Joseph’s Day feasts? Sunday, Mar 4 2012

Feasts- any rich or abundant meal,2a sumptuous entertainment or meal for many guests. Eating, drinking, music, celebration these are all type of encounter we undergo with the people we care for. Every year we all come together several time to celebrate holidays such as Christmas and thanksgiving. Nevertheless, it can be something just as a family Sunday dinner. Feasting is a time of love, gathering, and conversation for all people around the world. It is a universal word used to show a great amount of food is about to be shared amongst a group of people. A feast does not have to have a specific reason to have one. However, when Daniel described in Daniel this feast was in respects of God. The feast (celebration) was a way for the people to all come together, eat, and feed on the food and to become satisfied. They were able to share the great doings of the Lord and to talk about the word of God.

The way ancient feast is like the modern St. Joseph’s Day feast are they, both are for the feeding of the people and for the blessed by God above. These two feast were created to bring the poor and people who were less fortunate together and to express and worship the lord. Even though the ancient feast had difference, foods and formations it was still in the lime light of God and for his goodness. These two feast were created for God and by God to bring people together in which they did.

Campell and Esselstyn are who profound researcher in the health field. Dr. Campbell, a nutritional scientist at Cornell University, explored his interest in the production of “high quality” of the protein we get from animal. While Dr. Esselstyn, a top surgeon and head of the Breast Cancer Task Force, always showed, his interest and desire to learn more are what causes certain diseases. Thought they are from two totally difference backgrounds in their choice of field their common interest have sparked up an new and incredible discovery. Their discovery is not a surprise to the American people. Yet, will make us question our outlook on how bad we want to be mentally, physically and emotionally stable. Their premise is that degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could usually be prevented – and in many cases reversed – by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. With this information, the world can become a better place, with better people and healthier long living people.

4. Blog Sunday, Mar 4 2012

The purpose of preserving tradition is so individuals can preserve their history, faith, and foundation to the next generations to come. It is a way to keep and leverage the meaning of life to other in your family as well as in your life. Traditions help you express and refresh the rich culture to the people in the outside world who maybe lost and or do not take life or their beliefs serious themselves. Tradition bring alive the ways of a person’s ancestors, their feeling, life’s trials and tribulations, it reenacts their ways and actions. It helps people have a reason to be whom they are inside and out, their thought, way of thinking, logic, and tradition is someone’s will. In addition, a person has illustrations power, strength, and wisdom of their roots, faith and religion. It is a step back into the previous world of ability, love, honor, respect, guidance, and reference. With dealing with tradition, there is only one way to go about cooking, sex life, relationship, parenting, and restrictions.  Life as we know it was very different not too long ago, however, it has evolved over time, but what’s so good about tradition is that it reminds us about our past life. Life is too short and my grandma said “you never can go anywhere if you never know where you’ve been”. I was able to slowing interpretive what she meant over the year; and I have grown wise and smarter about life. I also have gained knowledge about my history and the traditions of my family. As well as, transitioning to this school I have become open to others individual’s religion and the rich culture of New Orleans. Everyone has their own background, and no two people are the same. This is why God put divers ethical people on this world so that we can learn experience and seen for understanding of others. If we were, all the same there would never be any knowledge to gain from this world or each other. Life is a change to grown and everyday by meeting someone you are allowing yourself to transition and become a more knowledgeable person.

Blog 3: What are the social, religious, and/or economic connections to bread? Monday, Feb 6 2012

The social connection that New Orleanais has with bread is the historic style and make of the bread. This bread has served them for decades trying to feed and fulfill the emptiness of the people in New Orleans. French breach particularly has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles to land in this unique city of New Orleans. The bread has put New Orleans on the map. They have brought over to America the tradition and social atmosphere of good wholesome fresh bread to this city.

When it comes to religion in connection t bread particularly French bread for the celebration of St. Joseph’s altar. The bread symbolizes many things but mostly the rise of the people and the hope that the people shared with each other during the drought, which is why it is essential for this bread to be token seriously. This is why individuals who celebrate this holy day that this French bread is a must to have spread across the table. These individuals who make the bread usually sing and say religious thinks so that their cooking/ baking stays holy and for God.

With the mass production of bread factories back in the early nineteenth centuries bread was the most talked about and paid for product. Different people  made bread differently in which bread( real bread) was key to a success and substantial  growth in the economy at that time. However, once the market crashed and bakery owners started to lose their factories the bread industry stared to collapse, and everything with it. Only a few factories were actually able to survive this devastating disaster. Yet, the one who did were able to contract an build up their business and tend to their neighbors and costumers

Blog 2 (QEP 1): From what you’ve read for this week, speculate how documenting St Joseph’s altars might play a role in the promotion of a just and humane society? Sunday, Jan 29 2012

By promoting a St. Joseph’s alter in not only our community, but in communities all over the world will not just promote a humane just a just one as well. Since being in freshman seminar this semester, I have learned and developed a rich understanding of what, and why there are these alters.  The St. Joseph’s alter represent gathering, love, togetherness, and hope. This rich tradition was originally started from a drought that triggered a famine in Italy, which left them starving. Their crops would not grow and they had no water. Then one day they prayed to St. Joseph’s and he gave them rain.  Rain to re nurture their stock to end their famine. Once all the food was refurbished there they had a big St. Joseph’s alter which provide food for everyone? Everyone and any one that need or just wanted to eat they could come and eat. They changed its mines mentality too it’s ours. It changed the people in to giving and loving people who cared for each other. Unlike the United State where it is a “dog eat dog world”, where everyone is only for themselves and careless about everyone else. So by promoting St. Joseph’s alter we are uplifting love, togetherness, respect, and hope. These are the most critical attributes that we need in the United States. We need to understand that without love, hope, togetherness and respect we will continue to downfall. Yet, by us celebrating this rich tradition, we will promotion just how a just and humane society should be and look like. Caring, depending, relying, and thing out for the best of everyone not just themselves would be life changing.  St. Joseph’s is the ideal day that I wish was celebrated every day, because then the United States of America would be a just and humane society.

Blog 1: Describe a memorable food tradition in your family. Remember this is a public blog. Sunday, Jan 29 2012

Blog 1: Describe a memorable food tradition in your family. Remember this is a public blog.

In my family food is one of the only things that will bring us together regardless of our differences. Most of our most memorable experiences that my family has experience have occurred around food. We do not have any food tradition just places that we go to eat which is our tradition. All awhile I was growing up me and my whole family and friends grew up eating at this all you can eat buffet named JJ North’s. This was a buffet that was most famous in Oregon having best food and prices, which made for the perfect gathering place. My grandfather is an old fashion person so to speak. He is accustomed to having a good hot plate right after church and especially on holiday  like Easter, Mothers Day, Father’s Day etc. It got to the point when you never had to ask my grandfather where he wanted to go to eat after church because everyone already knew the answer.

Since my sister and I use to live with my grandparents for a while, when we were growing up JJ North’s became a part of us as well. After a while of us constantly going to JJ North’s me and my sister started to play in our food and make some creations of our own. One day after church, we went to JJ North’s and my sister got some bright yellow corn, fluffy potatoes, and gravy all in a soup bowl. I looked at her with a deep discuss and confusion and she took a bit. With my anxiousness, I wanted to know what taste is like. Why she did it? Yet after she gave me a bite, I fell in love. Who would have ever thought that mashed potatoes, corn and gray would be such a delicious combinations.  Ever since that day my sister was playing in her food we made it a mandatory dish to get every time went to JJ North’s. As time went on we learned and seen and made many other creations but never anything like mash potatoes, corn, and gravy.

13. What are your thoughts about Xavier and its mission after our first semester? Tuesday, Nov 8 2011

After my first semester, here at Xavier I feel that this school fully represents and fulfills very part of its mission. This school is entitled to everything that’s said in their mission and I believe that they hold the mission very close to them. The mission states: “The ultimate purpose of the University is to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society.” After attending, Xavier this semester I have been able to see and witness what they meant in this part of the mission statement. Students here are very well dedicated to the improvement of not only the society, but also the Xavier’s community. Ever since the first week I was present on this campus community service was enforced. People here at Xavier love to help, and to see each other prosper, in which helps for a better and more just society on and off campus. I was able witness the pride and gratefulness of the graduating class of 2011, here at Xavier on Founders Day. This is made me long for the same thing. Every one of those graduating students could now stand up with pride with no doubts that they are capable of succeeding in any part of this world today. As the year went on, I found out about the Xavier graduate Regina Benjamin who has been appointed by President Obama, the past year to be Surgeon General of the United States. It was not until a history class, which covered this subject that I fully understood how successful Xavierite’s have become. Regina Benjamin has made many people of Xavier, but on New Orleans and the state of Louisiana very proud. For the many success stories that have come from Xavier University, I know that there is light on the other side of the tunnel and the mission proves that

12.What did you think of the book Fast Food Nation? Monday, Nov 7 2011

When  I first received this book during the summer I was ecstatic to read this book. I had heard many good things about it. So, after asking around to different people getting their opinion of the book I knew that this was going to be a great book.  Once I had began to read this book in July I found it somewhat interesting, but it read slow. As I went on through the book, I found many interesting and knowledgeable things that I had never known before. For this very reason, I kept on reading.  This book is filled with good information and well-supported facts that is very clear. I felt that his position in writing this book was very good, and that he took a very positive and strong stance in delivering his message to the public through this book. He uses good language, which is understandable and real that is why this book was so successful.

I feel that his book was very good but at the same time boring. If the book would have picked up a little faster than the story would of read a little better. All of the information is educating and has changed most of my views about fast food franchise. Toward the middle to the end of the book, the story started to get interesting and fun to read.  If the book had started more efficiently and more straightforward, it would have been a better book to read. I like this book because of the cause that it stood up for. Yet, after reading, this book it continues to run thought my mind every time I see a fast food restaurant; It makes me turn my head to the other direction. This is the typical reaction wanted from this book, for individuals who have read this book have started to neglect fast food industries. I believe that this was the whole point of this book, to get people to stop eating fast food.

11. How do automobiles and interstates play a role in spreading the fast food culture? Monday, Nov 7 2011

Fast food restaurants all over the world, especially the United States, have bombarded all interstates, highways and streets. These franchises have placed these fast food restaurants there so that anybody on the road can have easy access to their businesses.  Whenever someone is on the interstate, they are usually traveling for multiple hours; After, some time of being on the road sooner than later seeing any food place( such as McDonalds, Burger King or Wendy’s) advertising on every exit sign starts to become appealing.  These franchises know that by the interstate being such a busy place throughout the day it provides more business. For example, when a person is driving somewhere and there eye catches a glimpse of food restaurants they are more likely to make a pit stop at a fast food restaurant for a bite to eat. At times, some individuals are not eve hungry when passing a franchise such as McDonalds or Burger King, but after seen a commercial or two advertising some delicious new creation that they have made, some just have to try it. They use their advertising to grabs person attentions just as the sight of the Golden Arches. A person is more likely to attack to something that they are use to or are familiar with.  They call it fast food for a reason, so individuals can get in and get out quickly. Moreover, automobiles have able individuals to be able to travel these interstates to get to these restaurants. Automobiles have able all people of all different occupations to become more lazy and more vulnerable to these establishment.  In addition, they have helped transitions the typical American families from having a home-cooked meal too relying on fast food restaurants to be a major recourse for food. Automobiles and interstates have paved the way to the substantial growth within all fast food franchise whether sent in or take outs, and they will continue to if we as American continue to rely on these places to supply food for us and our families.

10. Thank You Letter To favorite teacher Thursday, Oct 27 2011

Dear, Ms. Manley I just wanted to say thank you for being such a wonderful educator as well as a person. From the first day, I came into your class and experienced your way of teaching I knew that this was going to be a very fun and interesting class. Ever since I was in high school, I looked at history as just being another subject that I had to pass. However, since being in your class I have seen the importance of history. I have learned that it is not only essential and beneficial to know your history, but as well to know the histories of others. I admire your demeanor of teaching. Most professors just take the material given to them and give it to the student expecting them to understand fully. These professors are the ones who view education and learning as a one-way street, however you are opposite. You are the true representation of a great educator. You care about the understanding of your students and actually are open to learn from them. Education is a two way street, yet the majority of the professors and teacher of today have neglect to understand or realize this fact. Once again, I want to say thank you and applaud you on your exquisite manner of educating your students. You are the best at what you do, so keep up the good work.

Sincerely, Iyesha Rosser
