Dear Ms. Pepper,

I want to thank you for all of your hard work in helping me with my English class. I appreciate your help throughout the writing lab sessions. You take your time with me and made sure I understood. The helping with my brainstorming for my papers in English was really helpful and needed. You provided information that I didn’t know and taught it to. I enjoyed the time of the learning experience. You made my first semester a little bit at ease with helping my grammar. So thanks for everything! You’re the best!

Do some research on Katherine Drexel. Do you think she would be happy with Xavier today? Saturday, Oct 16 2010

Saint Katherine Drexel purpose is to have a religious community for African Americans and Native Americans to get a good education. By starting off with a high school and it becomes a four year university shows that she had high standards for her students.  Even though the school was only for Blacks and Indians now the school is open for all races. So now everyone can get the good education that Saint Katherine Drexel wanted the Blacks and Indians to get.

Yes, I feel like Katherine Drexel would be proud of the students today because they have high goals and great accomplishments. There are so many African Americans that are successful and they are Xavier University of Louisiana alumni. There are a couple to be specific like Rosalind Miller, Alvin J. Boutte, and Dr. Charles Champion that have been recognized from being Xavier’s alumni’s. I know Katherine Drexel would be proud of Rosalind Miller because is the director of J.B. Henderson family investment center. The center provides services for residents of Louisiana’s three areas of low income housing departments which she is trying to keep the schools mission statement of keeping a just and humane society. Rosalind was a graduate from Xavier in 1998. Katherine Drexel would also be happy with the accomplishments that Alvin J. Boutte have made by being the founder and CEO of Indecorp that is one of the largest black owned financial institution in the United States of America. He is displaying how Xavier University of Louisiana prepared him to be a leader when he graduated in 1951. She would definitely be happy with Dr. Charles Champion because he was named one of the fiftieth most influential pharmacists by America’s Druggist magazine. He is a community pharmacist that had high standards being a alumni from Xavier after graduating in 1955.

What influence does Farmer’s catholic heritage have an his work and does my religious heritage affect mine? Thursday, Oct 14 2010

Growing up in the city of Chicago, IL I have always realize in the community that catholic heritage tend to focus on servicing the need. The people in the catholic heritage always have different charities in the world to help the people in need. Dr. Farmer main focus is to service the need because of him being caring and active in the community. For example, how he helps his patients by going to the communities just to check up on them from not hearing from them in a while. Him servicing the people in Haiti because they need it shows the catholic side of him.Caring and being active are also characteristics that shows him being a good catholic at work.

Right now the work I do is being at school. I feel that my religion do influence the work I do. I am a Christian and I believe in if  I just have a little faith as small as a mustard seed that everything for the good will work out in my favor. For example, if i need help in a class, I trust in my faith that it will get better and I will understand it. For trusting in my faith keeps my work done, because i use the homework to understand the classwork. So I push myself to make sure I understand whats needed to be understood. Another example, I pray sometimes before I have a big exam or evaluation, for a good grade or feedback.  So my religion do influence my work.

How has poverty benefited Haiti and New Orleans? How has it hurt Haiti and New Orleans? Do you believe in the preferential option for the poor? Tuesday, Oct 5 2010

I think poverty benefited Haiti and New Orleans by others like Dr. Paul Farmer going to help the environment. I feel the poverty in these environments give them publicity for people to help because they are in need for reconstruction. They are in need for reconstruction because of Haiti had the big earthquake and New Orleans had the big hurricane. People like Dr. Farmer immediately was putting in work for the two different places. For example, Dr. Farmer giving patience free medicine and cash stipends for benefits them for being poor. Because just like Haiti there were people getting insurance money back for the hurricane. That would be my opinion in how the two benefited from poverty.

I feel that poverty has hurt the people in Haiti and New Orleans just as well benefited them, too. But the way they have been hurt for the poverty have killed people in so many ways. Addiction, starvation, and depression has a way to kill and hurt people. The addiction of drugs have killed people from over dosages and hurt  the people who was close to the addict. The starvation of the poor and homeless having no money to buy or cook food. The middle and lower class have suffer from depression because of not being employed or family members dieing from addiction and starvation.

for me to believe in the preferential option for the poor would only be sometimes. There are people out here in the world that do want to change their life and find a job. But there is always a problem in life that would not just get you to that point. There are also people who doesn’t put any effort into changing there lives. Those people sometimes just have a negative perspective in life and won’t change for no one.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Tuesday, Sep 28 2010

My favorite class here at Xavier is my Communications 1010 about fundamental of public speaking. In this class we learn and do many things with public speaking. The things we do the most that interest me is workshops, and do a  discussions, and speeches. The workshops are getting into a group of four with my classmates and do different speeches. I like this because the group that I am in has good communication skills as well as me. We also have fun together when we meet outside of class because of our different personalities are so outgoing. The discussions that we have are informative or just holding the class attention. I like to have a class that have everyone interested and interacting with the discussions to have a good conversation. The speeches are my favorite because I get to learn new things about communication and the other students in the class. I like the speeches because I had a chance to let everyone know who I am and where I am from. This is my favorite class because it gives everyone a chance to ourselves. My professor is very open and laid back but have high standards with our work. I really like this class because I am comfortable and easy to participate.

What type of leadership skills does Paul Farmer possess? What type of leaderships do you possess? Monday, Sep 27 2010

Dr. Paul Farmer show many characteristics of leadership skills throughout his life. Showing leadership skills is guiding, conducting, or sacrificing something in your life. Leadership skills can help others go far in the work field as a higher person. He was a leader because he gave his patients free medicine and a cash stipend for food, child care, and transportation to monthly doctors appointments at zanmi vasaite. That was guiding others to feel free to take help and he wouldn’t  change the rules for anyone. Dr. Farmer was a leader even when he  was a young child because of his way to conduct. When he was in fourth grade he started a herpetology club. The last characteristic that proved Farmer was a leader is when he made a sacrifice. He hiked to villages of the patients, visiting them in their hut and it took weeks for him to get there. He sacrificed weeks to check on his patients in need.

I feel the leadership skills that I have is directing and sacrificing. To direct you have to have a good positive attitude. I have a good positive attitude, because I was the one in high school everyone would come for advice or just to get positive feedback. Everyone always told me that I would make their day. The other leadership skill is sacrificing and I feel like I always sacrifice something with my family. For instance, every time my brother need a babysitter for his children I always take the initiative to sacrifice my weekends to babysit two toddlers. To direct and sacrifice are leadership skills that Dr. Farmer and I have in common.

Is Paul Farmer a good role model? Who is your role model(s) and why? Monday, Sep 27 2010

I would say Paul Farmer is a good role model because of the accomplishments that he has. Being a founder to cure infection diseases is a huge accomplishment. Especially, having younger people look up to him, because he is saving people lives. I respect him for going to another country to service the people. As Paul Farmer being a doctor influence me to help the need when I become a doctor.

My life has been influenced by many individuals, but the most influential person has been Mrs. Carolyn Norton, my mother. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be breathing right now. I respect her for taking care of my brothers and I. Over the years my mom taught me many lessons to achieve success throughout life as my role model because of her accomplishments.

Living with my mom for seventeen years I have learn the value of initiative, leadership, and patience. For example, my mom have shown and taught me all three of those characteristics, because of her finishing school while working and raising children to get her master’s in education. She always say “Don’t be ashamed to help others.”

Why did I choose Xavier??? Sunday, Aug 29 2010

Well my senior year in high school I knew nothing about Xavier at all. I had it all planned that I was going to Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA. There was no doubt in my mind that I was going to another university, but I had an unusual call from a talent search organization after graduation. I signed up for the talent search for scholarships in the beginning of senior year. This talent search helps students find the right college for their needs in the inner city of Chicago, IL.
As soon as I had an interview with the talent search organization I found out two important facts. The first fact I found out was the school I was going to go to didn’t have a pre-pharmacy program as well as I thought. The second fact was Xavier University of Louisiana is the top producers for black pharmacists. I felt disappointed about Clark Atlanta but excited about Xavier. On that same day the counselor from the talent search insisted on me to apply right then.
Throughout two weeks of waiting for acceptance, I was researching so many things on Xavier. First, it was checking the classes to take and requirements that I needed. The possibility in getting into the college of pharmacy after sophomore year is a great plan for me. Secondly, I had to check the student living and campus life for the students. There are so many positive organizations and clubs on campus that I can join. Lastly but not least, it was almost as far as I can go from the Midwest. Ever since I can remember I always wanted to move far away from home for college.
At the end of the month of June I was having a late graduation party, but the whole time I was worried about my acceptance letter. I started to freak out because I didn’t hear from Xavier in two weeks. Later that same night as my party, I received a larger envelope than normal from Xavier and it was my acceptance letter. That night I just knew Xavier was home for me because on the special day it came when I was celebrating the ending of high school.
