My Favorite teacher at Xavier. Monday, Dec 7 2009

The thing I value the most is the support you receive from your teachers at Xavier University. I had  a family emergency to tend to back home.  Some people close to me where injured in a  car wreck and my family didn’t know if they would make it or not. I remember doing  a lot of praying and asking God if he could bless me with wisdom. I Remember asking my self, “Lord, what am I going to do about my school work, I just can’t leave in the middle of the semester.” My psychology teacher, Mrs. Schulte was a great assistance during this time. I had an exam to take the week I was suppose to leave ,and she assured me that I would be just fine. She encouraged me to go home to check up on my family and that i can take the exam when I return. I was extremely grateful for this act of kindness. It made going home a little bit easier. Mrs. Schulte makes psychology interesting and has made it easy for me to fall in love with  the subject. I never thought psychology would be so interesting. I am extremely thankful to you Mrs. Schulte for allowing my stay at Xavier to me a little more comfortable. Hopefully, we can continue to improve our teacher/ student relationship. I wish I could take you as a teacher every semester. Once again I am thanking you for your kindness and sympathy for my family’s crisis. Ugh Xavier makes it so hard to leave.

Interview with Senior Monday, Dec 7 2009

I interviewed Ciera Morris and her major is psychology pre-med. I chose to interview someone with the same major as mine because I felt it would be vital to my development as a college student. her opinions on Xavier where both positive and some negative feedback, but overall she encouraged me to finish my stay here at Xavier. She stated, “Xavier, is like my home away from home. We are a family.” She stressed that it is important to feel connected with your school when you are attending  a college out-of-state. Ciera and I have  a lot in common we both are not new Orleans native and we share a passion for science. She also let me know that Xavier will do its best with assisting me in getting into medical school. However, she also made it clear that Xavier will not baby me and it is up to me to me to establish a strong academic career. She gave me  a lot of positive feed back on Xavier’s academics but also stated that Xavier is not a party school. “If you came to Xavier to party, i suggest you transfer.” Xavier is focused on their academics and can care less if the students feel there aren’t enough campus parties. I truly appreciate my talk with Ms. Morris she allowed me to consider my options with Xavier. Ia m considering transferring next semester to be closer to home. However, I do plan to carry all the knowledge Xavier has given me on my journey to becoming  a doctor. I am truly grateful for the experience. :)

Do you think Katherine Drexel would be happy with Xavier today? Thursday, Oct 29 2009

There are 102 black historical colleges and 253 catholic colleges in the United States, yet there is only one that is both a historically black and catholic institution. That distinction belongs to Xavier University of Louisiana, which strives to combine both attributes of culture and faith. St. Katherine Drexel came to New Orleans when she became aware of the serious lack of catholic churches int he institutions.  She at first established  a high school but later in 1925  , Xavier became a reality when the colleges of liberal arts and sciences was formed. Xavier today has made sure they carry out the values and morals of St. Katherine.  St. Katherine wanted the rights of education to be open to any one who desired to be educated.  The sprit of St. Katherine is very much alive today. The university makes a great effort to ensure her mission she established decades ago. Xavier is a nationally respected institution and pride themselves in educating many of the brightest students of America. I’m sure St. Katherine Drexel is smiling from heaven because she founded such a moving and powerful institution.  Mother Katherine was clear about the purpose of Xavier. She wanted to invite people to fully share in the faith that had helped shape her life and she wanted produce leaders. From the beginning she emphasised in the importance of giving back to the community.  Today launches some of the biggest community services acts and are in touch with New Orleans’ culture. Xavier continues to be nationally recognized for their academics and producing leaders. I believe St. Katherine would be honored to see  the doctors, lawyers, teachers, and scientists she helped produce.

What would Barack Obama’s father think of the book? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I think Obama’s father would have mixed feelings about the book. In the beginning Obama mentions never really knowing his father and he basically got information about him from his grandparents.  The book gives description on events that should have been taught by his father, but was given by his step father. I wonder would that make Obama’s father feel any less of a man because he was not their for his son. Even when Obama’s father did surface Obama felt a certain resentment towards the man. He felt that his existence lacked so much in his life that his opinions where not needed.  Then there were times when Obama tried to find his identity based on what he had known about his father. He had known that they shared the sane qualities. He knew that they were both intelligent and leaders. I truly believe that Obama’s father had very little hand in his success. He passed on traits to Obama but  no guidance at all. On the contrary, Obama’s father should feel proud that he birthed such an outstanding individual. Even though, his presence lacked a lot during his childhood, he should still feel happy that his identity helped shape Obama’s identity. It took a while for Obama to grasp who he was as a person, but when he did a lot of his father’s traits were evident . Obama’s father was such a strong individual because he still had an effect on Obama. Even if he feels offended about some of the things he wrote about in the book, he should still be happy that his son is the first black president of the United States.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

My favorite class at Xavier is Introductory Psychology. My major is Psychology/Pre-Med. I want to become an OB/GYN,but I always been intrigued with Psychology. This class allows me to understand certain aspects about myself that I never existed. Also I love how psychology is a science and the class does a lot of scientific studies and research. My teacher, Dr. Schlute has so much energy while teaching this course. She tends to slip in brainy jokes that I always seem to catch on too. The class forces a person to extend their horizon, it takes more  than understanding the basic principles of a study. I enjoy this class the most because it challenges me the most. My first semester courses consist of developmental courses and they aren’t challenging to me at all. However , next semester I  will take more classes that will push me closer to my  lifetime goal. Psychology is so interesting and our class activities always seem to excite me. Xavier’s faculty are truly interested in making sure that you succeed. i truly appreciate that and look forward to giving my all to make sure I am a success story. I am glad that I took psychology. I think I can actual grow to love psychology as much as I love medicine. Medicine will forever be my first love but I think I may be able to make room for psychology. Even though I don’t want  A career in psychology, i still believe it’s vital for me to study it. I will allow me to understand my patients better and then I can better serve them.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

New Orleans have been affected tremendously by Hurricane Katrina. Local citizens are outraged by the government’s decisions regarding the storm. I’m from Ohio but I clearly remember feeling  sympathy for the Katrina victims. The storm ws four years ago and New Orleans have changed drastically since then. The poverty rate  has shot up since then. I remember feeling outraged  after purchasing a five dollar tube of toothpaste. The taxes out here are extremely high. A fellow native from New Orleans told me  that the government has fixed the state’s economy. Either a person has money or they don’t and that there is no in between. I became frustrated upon hearing this. New Orleans is such a beautiful city that is filled with life and culture. I’m honestly scared that the government will make taxes so high that it would be almost impossible for anybody to live here. Then there is a positive side of poverty. Poverty has also influenced a lot of citizens here to do more to better themselves; rather it be furthering their education or learning a trade. Poverty has even given the people of  New Orleans courage to pack up and leave their hometown. I truly admire New Orleans courage to move on with their lives. Their ability to adapt is overwhelming; I don’t think I could bounce back if my hometown was destroyed. I read a sign on a building wall that stated, ”You can’t stop a city with style”. This quote was so powerful to me;New Orleans screams style and  energy.

What type of leadership do you posess? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

Growing up as a child my mother would always tell me Demique be a leader and not a follower. Now that I am going into adulthood, I understand the importance of this saying. Society can often side track you and a person can get caught up in the rapture of doing what is cool. That why I believe a person should stay true to his or her values at all times. I dare to be different, I’m always thinking of ways to talk, dress, and communicate differently than others. I have a take charge personality. I’m alwasy trying to come up  with a solution to  any problem that is brought to me, rather it’s my problem or my friends or family. I also express how important education is to a person;especially if  your an African-American female or male. Education is important to succeed in a world that is constantly changing and evolving everyday. I am a strong individual both physically and mentally. I try to keep my emotions on lock. i truly believe a person will crumble if their not strong and not scared to be leader. A person can’t tell me my dreams aren’t already realities. At times a person can be their own worse critic. I believe in my self so negative comments won’t effect me. Self image and how a person portrays themselves is always the key . Confidence can always pushed me through my toughest times.  Telling myself that I can do it and I can conquer any thing always get me through any obstacle. FAITH IS ALSO THE  KEY TO SUCCEED IN THIS LIFE. I need a higher leader to get me through this cold world.

What are My professional plans and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I am a psychology pre-med major. I have always been interested in psychology but my heart is with medicine. I mentioned before that I have a dream of being a doctor.  When I look up at the stars wondering what my destiny is, I always see my white lab coat in the future. I refuse to settle for anything less and I won’t. However, I do believe in three more years my psychology degree will help me have a steady income while I am in medical school. Medical School is quite expensive and having  a steady income is vital. While at Xavier, I plan to study-abroad for several reasons. First factor, being that studying medicine in different countries is always good for a doctor’s career. Second, studying abroad is a great experience and it looks great while you trying to get into medical school. Finally, studying abroad will help me figure out if I want to attend a medical school in the states or over seas. I choose to state my life goals because Xavier’s mission allows me to do these things and more. Xavier’s mission is to contribute to the promotion of a well-rounded student. Meaning that Xavier wants their students to not only excel academically but in other areas also. This preparation takes place in a diverse learning and teaching environment that incorporates all relevant educational means including research and community service. Xavier’s mission is designed for success.  Medical school is such a grueling task and I need a powerful mission to succeed in society.

Why did I choose to come to Xavier? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

Over and over I have been presented with this same question and at times i would become stumped. I’m from Ohio and Xavier isn’t anywhere near home and its expensive. However, every since i was six my aspiration in life has been to become a doctor;I want to deliver babies. I believe a person dreams and goals is what keeps them moving forward in life. When i first was presented with attending Xavier I THOUGHT IT WAS INSANE. I never even been to New Orleans and I don’t have any family here. When I arrived here I felt like this is where I need to be. The college is great academic wise and the city is so dynamic. I am aware of how grueling and tough medical school is and I didn’t want to become looked over at a larger school. Xavier’s staff are really eager and happy to help their students pursue their life goals. Xavier has a lot to offer and I plan to stick it out even when I feel like I rather be at home. I can’t wait to have the DR. in front of am name..this is my only passion. I can’t fathom doing anything else with my life. I willing to do any and everything to make this dream a reality. Xavier states that excellence is the key and I honestly believe they will do what they can to make sure I prosper in life. Xavier is my home away from home and I am extremely honored to be here.
