Interview with an upperclassman Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

I interviewed my friend Devin. She goes to church with me and is in pharmacy school now. She thinks that Xavier’s mission statement applies to her everyday life. She has used it throughout her years at Xavier. She wants to travel to Africa after graduation to help people in need. I think that this act deeply applies to the mission statement of Xavier.

Why I Chose to come to Xavier Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

I have been born and raised in New Orleans. I love this city. My high shcool is just two blocks from Xavier. I would pass Xavier every day going and coming to school. My mother has sent me to all of Xavier’s summer programs like Math Star, Bio Star and Chem Star. My mother graduated from Xavier. So to tell you the truth Xavier has been apart of my life since I have been little. I always knew that I would end up at Xavier. No other school matches to Xavier’s accomplishments. Of course we all know that Xavier is known for producing successful Pharmists, Doctors, and Nurses. This is another improtant reason I chose Xavier. My goal is to become a doctor, an OB/GYN. I knew that there was no other place in the world that would have my best interest in mind and push and force me to succeed. At Xavier I feel that I have no other choice but to succeed and this is the most most most important reason I chose Xavier.

My Professional Plans Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

Of course I am at Xavier to persue some kind of medical study. I want to become a doctor. I want to go to Medical School and eventually start my own parctice with maybe a couple of friends I plan to meet in medical school or while completing my residency. Xavier’s mission statement states, “The ultimate purpose of the University is to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society.”  I feel that Xavier is prepating me to go into the world and be well rounded. I know that I will be able to function in all environments. I will be able to accociate myself with all types of people and ethinic groups. I know that Xavier will prepare me for the medical field and for the personal interactions that come along with the medical field.

What type of leadership skills do I posess Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

I consider myself as a leader. I follow my own path and I make my own decisions. Of course everyone is going to say that they are leaders, but I don’t think that this is true. In high school we all experienced peer pressure. But it is time to come out of that. I am a very blunt, outspoken person. I am not the type of person that tries to form myself to what other people like or approve of. I think that this is a good trait of a leader because I am always myself. I don’t like to do what other people do. I like to start my own trends. I know that some people will not like me because of these traits, but this is just one of the things I have always had to deal with because I am a leader.

Poverty in New Orleans Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

I have lived in New Orleans my entire life. To tell the truth I can’t really think of how poverty has benefied New Orleans. Maybe because a lot of people have come to New Orleans to help and make New Orleans better. This is one of the only benefits I can see coming from poverty. Who could ever benefit from being in poverty. Poverty is probably more of a problem then a help. Poverty is a huge problem here in the city. Proverty is probably the main reason a lot of people live outside of the New Orleans city area in the burbs. Poverty is a turn off. This city has been passed by for a lot of opportunities due to in a huge part of poverty. Poverty has hurt the city of New Orleans a lot more than it has helped us prosper.

What is my favorite class? Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

My favorite class would probably have to be Chemistry Lab. Although chemistry lecture and drill are not my favorite classes, chemistry lab is becasue we do experiments. I do not have to exactly know how to work the problems, but I can actually see the experiment in action. Actually seeing how something works, I think makes it easier for me to understand the quantatative aspect of Chemistry. I also enjoy Chemistry Lab because it is a very hands on class. Although the class is almost three hours, completing the class and experiments makes the time goes by faster. Chemistry lab is also a way for us as students to get to know one another. Most of the time we work with the same people and become more familiar with each other. Also my teacher Dr. K  makes sure we always get out of class early. The grading makes the class enjoyable also. Homework is worth more than quizzes which is always a good thing. This gives the students a little break to do well in the class unlike chemistry drill where our entire grade is based on quizzes.

What would Obama’s father think of the book? Wednesday, Dec 2 2009

I think Obama’s father would be proud of Obama’s book. Obama’s father might be reluctant to share some of the things Obama shares. I think his father would think the book was really good. It would probably open Obama’s father’s eyes to how his son really felt and how he was confused about who he really was for most of his life. The book would probably bring the two closer if his father was alive. This book would give his father a first hand view of his childhood and how he grew up. This book would make his father very proud. Obama’s accomplishments would also make his father proud. He could see the walls his son has knocked down and the doors he has opened for other African Americans.

Do I think St. Katherine Drexel would be happy with Xavier today? Saturday, Nov 28 2009

St. Katherine Drexel and the sisters of her mission were dedicated to betterment of African Americans and Native Americans. In 1915 Xavier was first founded as a high school and then in 1925 the four year college institution was formed. She also opened many mission schools for Native Americans to receive an education. St. Katherine Drexel dedicated her life to the people who were in need. She and her sisters believed in the power of education and that everyone person regardless of skin color deserved an education. Yes, I do think St. Katherine Drexel would be very proud of the many accomplishments of Xavier students. Xavier has the best pharmacy and pre-medicine program in the United States. Xavier is dedicated to the betterment of all African American students. Xavier has kept St. Katherine Drexel’s mission in mind.
