Courtney’s Favorite Instructor! (Letter) Saturday, Nov 21 2009

Dear Dr. Carmichael,
As a  proud student in your Biolody 1230 course, I can truly say that I am extremely lucky to have you as an instructor this semester. Not only are you one of the most helpful instructors that I have, but you are always willing to lend a hand out to myself and any other student of faculty member in need. I appreciate the fact that you always answer any question that a student has about the material and class. I always love the fact that if you don’t have the answer to a question, you get the answer for them! I know that you are an excellent instructor because it shows through my progressing grades in your class. I remember a time I was in the Biology Tutoring Center and a tutor asked you to come in for a second and answer a question. You explained the question so well that I was able to understand not only that question, but a few other questions that I couldn’t quite find the answer to. With these and various other delighful characteristics that you possess as an instructor, I have already recommended you to many students who plan to take Biology 1230 next semester. You enthusiasm, helpfulness and intelligent character has truly created experience in your class that I will never, ever forget. I appreciate everything you’ve done for me as a student, and I hope to have you as an instructor in the future.
Thank you,
Courtney DuBose

Would Katherine Drexel Be Proud? Friday, Nov 6 2009

After doing a little research on Katherine Drexel, I can say that she would truly be proud of Xavier if she were here to see it. Katherine Drexel was a woman who dedicated her life to the needs of the oppressed Native Americans and blacks. She also was a woman who addressed the social inequalities of minorities and strived to achieve education for all, no matter color, race or religion. Xavier today is like a “mirror image” of Katherine Drexel. Not only is Xavier a school for minorities, but for students that come from all over! Xavier, like Katherine Drexel, strives to promote the education of minorities. This is why Xavier is number one for placing African Americans into medical school. Katherine Drexel would also be proud of Xavier if she were here because Xavier has grown to become an institution that strives for equality amongst every human being that steps on this campus. That is what Katherine Drexel dedicated her entire life too. These are simply a few reasons why Katherine Drexel would be proud of Xavier.

Barack, What Would Your Dad Think of Your Book? Wednesday, Oct 7 2009

In my opinion, I believe that Obama’s father would be proud of his book for various reasons. In the book, Obama talked alot about racism. It is a fact that racism occurs today, so for Obama to address it in his book is one reason why I believe that his father would be proud of him. I also think that Obama will be proud of his book because he simply took the time to write and have the book published. It is amazing, to me, that Obama wrote this book not even knowing that he would soon become the President of the United States. As you read the book, you can see how Obama has changed over the years. Obama’s father would not only be proud of the fact that Obama has made a change in the world, but that he has made a change for himself. In the book, Obama is strictly honest with his opinions about racism. This would make Obama’s father proud at the fact that Obama can talk about the reality of racism and its affect on our world today.

Courtney’s Favorite Class. Wednesday, Oct 7 2009

My favorite class at Xavier has to be– English 1010 with Mrs. Bray. This is my favorite class because I love to write! I also love reading different excerpts in our required text. We always have reading assignments for homework and when we get to class, we discuss them. Sometimes our discussions turn into debates. I love to debate because it is very interesting to hear my classmates’ perspective about various topics. I also like for others to hear my perspective about various topics in class. English has always been a subject that I’ve understood, so when I’m there, I never have to worry about not understanding the material. Another reason why English is my favorite class is because I enjoy helping my peers with their essays and other writing assignments. Over the years, I have been called a “grammar-freak” because I am always correcting what others say and and how they write. For example, if I were to notice an a mispelled word or an incomplete sentence , I immediately say “you spelled this wrong,” or “you know this is an incomplete sentence, right?” Sometimes my friends get annoyed by it, but they appreciate my help. These are just a few reasons why English is my favorite class at Xavier.

Poverty in New Orleans. Wednesday, Oct 7 2009

There has always been poverty in New Orleans, but since Hurrican Katrina, poverty has stricken the lives of thousands of people. With poverty, it has, unfortunately led to a high rate of crime in many neighborhoods and communities. It has also led to forced the youth to turn to selling drugs so that they can support themselves. With poverty, families are unable to send their children in school so that they can get an education. These are just a few reasons why poverty has continued to be a harmful factor of life in New Orleans. Fortunately though, poverty has been beneficial to the city of New Orleans in various. With poverty, communities have grown stronger than before. Students, like myself, can learn to appreciate the things they have in life as they see poverty (sometimes at its worst) in New Orleans. With the reality of poverty all over, it has changed the lives of many people for the good, and it has allowed people to truly understand the value of even the simplest things in life.

Courtney’s Leadership Skills. Wednesday, Oct 7 2009

There are many leadership skills that I have possessed over the years of school, employment as well as my everyday life. One leadership skill that I have is the ability to set the example for those who surround me. I have mostly learned this skill from living with my two-year-old godson. Another leadership skill that I have acquired is the abilility to motivate my peers when times get difficult. This skill arose from having close friends that live in unstable homes. With this skill came my ability to give advice about various topics to not only those friends, but to anyone that needs it. Finally, the most important leadership skill that I possess is the ability to stay committed to everything that I do. This skill was especially important when I was employed this summer. Commitment shows that you are determined to get things done. As a college student, I have to continue to possess commitment in my work, classes and everything else I do.

My Professional Plans. Wednesday, Oct 7 2009

I have always been one who never knew what I wanted to be “when I grow up,” until recently. After finding interest in caring for infants, I researched a career in Neonatology. Neonatologists worked in NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) at hospitals, mostly for children. Xavier’s mission is to “prepare it’s students to assume roles in leadership and service in a global society.” I believe that this mission affects my professional plan to become a Neonatologist because leadership and service is very important when working to save the lives of infants. My younger brother, Marcus, also influenced my decision to become a Neonatologist. This is because, when he was first born, he was very sick; he actually almost didn’t make it to see his first birthday. But with the help of the doctors at Children’s Hospital and the Lord’s grace, he was able to see his 14th birthday this past April. These are the the reasons behind my decision to become a Neonatologist as my profession.

Why Xavier? Tuesday, Oct 6 2009

There are various reasons why I decided to attend Xavier. However, to be honest, I hadn’t even considered Xavier until my mother & uncle informed me about it. My uncle, who is a doctor, recommended me to apply to Xavier because of the Biology/Pre-Med Honor Corps. I still had to do some research of my own. After contacting the school, I got alot of good information, including a information packet that was sent to me in the mail. Along with that packet came an application. There was nothing that I could lose by applying, so I went ahead and did it. I truly didn’t think I was going to get accepted, so my back up plan was going Delaware State, which I was accepted to. After a few weeks, I finally received my acceptance letter. With that, I knew that if Iwas accepted to the school that was best for me, I was going to go. Not only did this decision make my Mother proud, but my entire family.
