Thanks Dr. Noonan!!!! Tuesday, Dec 1 2009

Hey Dr. B. One of our assignments for my freshman seminar class was to send an email to my favorite teacher thanking them for their work, so I chose you. Dr. B I would like to thank you for all that you have helped me with this semester. You have helped me to improve my writing skills and you have helped me to realize that maybe I should have stuck with my major that I had for a long time. When I was in middle school I started getting an interest in law so that is when I decided that I would become and English/Pre-Law major. I love breaking down arguments and analyzing a problem. Then when I got in the 11th grade an Ob/Gyn came to my school and told us her story which made me want to change my career choice. But after being at Xavier for one semester you have helped me discover that my life goal was meant to be English/Pre-Law. I owe you Dr. B, because if I didn’t have a great English teacher like you I don’t think I would have realized that I was making the right choice from the beginning.

St. Katharine Drexel Tuesday, Dec 1 2009

The mission statement of St. Katharine Drexel was to promote a more just and humane society to prepare students to take on leadership roles. I feel that St. Katharine Drexel along with some of the sisters of the Blessed Sacrament would be happy with Xavier and then again they would not. I feel that they would be happy because of the prestigious status that Xavier has over the nation. Xavier is known around the United States as one of the top African American schools to get the most African American students into medical school. But i feel that they would be disappointed because when they opened Xavier they opened it to become a liberal arts school to make more African American teachers to teach in the New Orleans area. Though Xavier carries a prestigious status they do not carry the status as a liberal arts school, they carry it as a science school with plenty of science majors.

Obama’s father Tuesday, Dec 1 2009

I feel that Obama’s father would be proud of his son because he made it somewhere that most people thought a black man would never make it. He’s probably excited by the fact that his son has done the unbelievable in a somewhat still racist nation. But he would be disappointed because his son pointed out every flaw that he has. Even though Obama’s mother tried to make his father seem like such an extraordinary father even though he was never there for Obama through the hardest times of his life. Obama didn’t have a father to teach him how to be a man. Being a man is something that Obama had to learn on his own, other than the help of his mother and his grandmother. Because his father wasn’t around as much as he should have been Obama had to be the father figure in his younger brother’s life teaching him how to become a real man.

My favorite class at Xavier Sunday, Oct 11 2009

My favorite class at Xavier would have to be my English Composition and Rhetoric course with professor Noonan. I would have to say it’s my favorite course because I enjoy English and Dr. Noonan is a fun and intelligent teacher. When we are in class she isn’t strict and she isn’t boring. She makes the class enjoyable for the students and herself. While in my English class I’m never bored and I never dose off. I also enjoy the class because even though I had a very strict English teacher who would not let anything less that what she thought was perfect pass. Though Mrs. Richardson was strict on me with my essays I appreciate everything she did for me because thanks to her I made an A on my first college essay. I thank her and I thank Dr. Noonan for helping make my Freshman English class enjoyable and showing me that the strict ways do pay off.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

Personally I don’t think poverty is a beneficial property, but it can be beneficial from what I have read on the internet. Poverty has benefited New Orleans because most people know of New Orleans because of all the poverty. New Orleans isn’t really a poor state but they have struggled from tough times including Hurricane Katrina. The damage that Hurricane Katrina did to New Orleans took people’s lifes and people’s homes and it changed the way that people would look at New Orleans different for the rest of their lives. Though President Bush started FEMA to help with the damage that was done it New Orleans it was useless. He didn’t really help them it all. As I already stated poverty has hurt New Orleans by destroying people’s homes and taking away loved ones. The poverty that New Orleans has been going through hurts them more than it hurts normal poverty states because it normally takes away their loved ones in the process of the poverty.

What type of leadership skills do you possess? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I possess different types of leadership skills. When in high school I was the Vice President of our high school auxiliary team. I earned the title because of my determination, love, and passion for the sport. When I first went to my new high school my junior year I learned of the step team called the Blu Diamondz (with no affiliation to the greek sorority Zeta Phi Beta). I had always wanted to be apart of a step team but they didn’t offer it at the high school I attended before. When I was in the 9th grade I was the section leader of the trumpet section in our band. I earned that position because I was very dedicated to the band, I knew how to read music, and I showed a lot of leadership and determination. I treated every member of the trumpet section the same even though two of the girls were my bestfriends. With leadership comes responsibility. I had responsibility cause I never chose anything over my section.

What are your professional plans and how does Xavier’s mission affect that? Friday, Sep 18 2009

My professional plans after college are to become a OB/Gyn. Though when Xavier was founded it was founded to be a liberal arts college for less privelged African Americans it has in the past years been known to be numbe 1 for putting African American in medical school. In the mission statement it states that they will teach how to be leaders in a just and humane society. That’s what I want to be a leader. I know you’re probably thinking how is she going to be a leader if she’s just a doctor? Well the truth is that most kids, teenagers, and some adults look up to the doctors and lawyers of the world. By showing them that a teenage girl from the poorest state in the United States can go to the only Catholic HBCU in the US then it will show them that with will and determination that you can succeed in anything that you desire.

Why I chose to attend Xavier? Thursday, Sep 10 2009

Durning my junior year of high school I had done plenty of research on colleges because that was what we were told to do not because I wanted to. So during the summer I procrastinated. I decided well I did all my research during school so I don’t have anything to do during the summer. So I didn’t apply for any scholarships. So during the fall semester of my senior year I still had no idea about what college or university I was going to be attending. I applied to six colleges: 3 in state & 3 out of state. Yes I got accepted into each one, no I didn’t get scholarships for each one. I got a scholarship from 1 in state & 1 out of state. I already had my first choice so I was just waiting on my acceptance letter. After receiving my acceptance letter from Xavier  I was finish. I chose to come to Xavier because of the research I did on the school. I found out that Xavier was #1 for putting African Americans in Medical School which was my goal.
