My favorite class at Xavier would have to be Biology. I love Biology because I love science. Science is very interesting to me. It shows how organisms grow and develop and that is very fascinating. My major is Biology PreMed, I chose this major because I want to become a doctor but also because I want to be a scientist also. I want the M.D behind my name along with Ph.D!

Yes, I think Katharine Drexel would be proud of Xavier today. Katharine founded Xavier on beliefs that African Americans and other minority groups could have the same opportunities as other people. Xavier has kept that tradition or belief alive by being number 1 in placing African Americans into medical school. Xavier is also number 1 for the amount of African Americans receiving undergraduate degrees in science. She wouldn’t be proud of how the people dress nowadays but she would be proud of the school and how it has helped many minorities acheive their dream.

 

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Tuesday, Oct 6 2009

I don’t think poverty would benefit any city. Since hurricane Katrina many people have been volunteering their services to the city and has donated to local charities so in a way that is beneficial to New Orleans. Poverty in a lot ways has hurt New Orleans. When people think of poverty, they think poor black people in the hood with crime and drugs. It makes the city look bad when in reality there is crime and drugs in every state and in every neighborhood in the United States. Poverty has help New Orleans because people are giving money back to the communities and poverty has hurt New Orleans because the crime rates have gone up.

After graduating from Xavier, I plan on going to Baylor School of Medicine to get my M.D degree.  After graduating from Baylor, I plan on doing my residency at Baylor also. Upon finishing residency, I plan on opening up my very own pediatric medical office for patients whose parents does not have insurance and those who do have insurance. I figure it’s the best of both worlds!

I chose to attend Xavier because of it’s statistics. Xavier is number 1 in placing African Americans into medical school and that has always been my dream. My dream is to become a Pediatric doctor, and of all the schools possible in Louisiana, I believed Xavier to be the best choice for me. Actually, Xavier was my second school of choice to attend, Rice was my first. I wanted to attend Rice because it has a program for pre-med students to attend Baylor Medical School upon graduation, but the out of state cost and tuition was too expensive. People think Xavier is expensive, Rice University was 2x more than Xavier’s tuition!
