how does katharine view xavier? Thursday, Dec 3 2009

i am sure katharine drexel would be very proud of the school that she started because it lives up to its main goal: the mission statement. the key words are: more just and humane society, and leadership and service. katharine drexel was a charitable person  and is considered a saint. she dedicated her life to giving back to the community, which not a lot of people do. she helped others and took nothing for herself in return, which was very just. xavier university puts big emphasis on community service, emulating the selfless work began by katharine drexel. the money she invested into educational institutions are helping to promote a more humane society, as more people are educated and refined. this school affords many opportunities for students to become excellent leaders and citizens if only people take advantage of them.

poverty in new orleans… Thursday, Dec 3 2009

the poverty is very evident all around the city. i think the poverty weakens the city because a lot of families are poverty stricken and starting from something is a whole lot easier than starting from nothing. once you lose a job, a home, or possessions, you begin to lose confidence in yourself as well as hope for financial success in the future. it is very hard for a poor person to be encouraged to continue down the right path because to them, they have not progressed.  poverty therefore affects the mind of the people in the city. it might make people think that they are less than others and that they dont deserve lives as nice as others. this could bring forth rage and bitterness. economically, the abandoned buildings, broken sidewalks and streets,  etc decrease property value. so even when a family is trying to move out of the city to escape the poverty, they are receiving less money than they need to get a good start.

Interviewing a senior Thursday, Dec 3 2009

i interviewed a senior student and asked them what they thought about the mission of the school. the student said it was alright, but they didnt really know how it affected them on a daily basis. when i confirmed to the student that the mission statement was one of the focus points of freshmen seminar, they shook their head in response. the student feels that they guess that the mission statement is nice to have or maybe even to know, but that the real important thing while being in college is to focus and get the grades you need to succeed. the student also said that most people walking around on xavier campus couldnt even tell you the first two words of the mission statement, and that it really didnt matter to anyone except for faculty and staff.

Email to a history teacher Thursday, Dec 3 2009

Dear Sister Barbara,

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication as a teacher. You are a fabulous professor as you adequately explain all the material and are always open to answering any questions. Your teaching methods set you apart from other professors in that you take the time to connect with the students and ensure that they are absorbing all of the information needed. For example, when you grade assignments you write clear comments so that we can know exactly how to improve to get the grade we want. With the document analysis papers, you did not require them to be turned in until you had returned the previous papers, that way we can always be improving. Specifically for me, you always took the time to sit and proofread my document analysis papers with me, since I have problems with writing in a concise manner. I appreciate you always being on time for class and having a pleasant demeanor, which in turn excited me about the course as a whole. I hope to be your student again in the future!!!

Thanks alot,

ALEXIS ELLIS

what would barack obama’s father think of his book? Friday, Oct 9 2009

i would hope his father would be just as proud, if not more, as the rest of the world. obama’s book shows the character traits that it would take anyone to write a non fiction piece of literature based upon the realities on their own personal life: maturity, courage, acceptance, enlightenment, and intelligence. although some may argue that barack obama’s book is “uncensored” or “unprofessional” it shows that while in power, he is still a run-of-the-mill guy who had real life experiences, obstacles, and mistakes. the honesty and truth put into his work is commendable; often people are skeptical about publishing things that could be dubbed “controversial”, or something that one is not sure that others will be excited to read.  obviously, obama went through tribulations for a reason: to learn something. he was generous enough to save some of us the trouble by just relaying to us what he learned, and it most definitely would not have had the impact it did if he did not portray it in the manner that he did. kudos.

What is my favorite class at Xavier and why? Friday, Sep 25 2009

My favorite class at Xavier would be either biology of english. Biology is one of my favorite classes because it makes sense to me and i dont have to try too hard to understand it. it comes naturally to me and i have an interest in it and that is why it is my major. i also like biology because it takes an object, whether it is a plant or a human, and takes it apart to show you how it all works together. i love taking things apart.

i like english because i love to write. i had a great high school education that taught me how to write in different styles and in the process, i developed my own writing style. i also love to read and to analyze what the writer is really trying to convey.  lastly, i like poetry.

What type of leadership skills do you possess? Thursday, Sep 17 2009

i possess the skills to be an effective leader. i have held several leadership positions throughout high school, and even now at xavier i am the freshmen class secretary. from these leadership roles i have the learned the value of important leadership skills. some of the most important skills i have picked up are punctuality, articulation, professionalism, accuracy, organization, fairness, openmindness, selflessness, and capability of prioritizing. these skills can be used in everyday life which is why i think it is so important for everyone to gather some kind of leadership experience in their lifetime. it really puts to the test the strengths and weaknesses of an individual and allows the opportunity for one to learn about themselves. personally,  i think being a leader in several different settings has enabled me to develop as a person and to become who i am today, someone who is capable of taking on any task and leading just about anyone in just about any situation.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Thursday, Sep 17 2009

My professional plans. Thursday, Sep 10 2009

I aspire to become a surgeon and motivational speaker. I am not fully informed of all of the accolades Xavier recieves [other, of course than the obvious], and i am not sure how accredited its programs are as a whole. Anyways, as I progress through my freshmen year I hope to find that the rumors are true and that Xavier really will be a valuable tool for getting into med school.
