Letter to my favorite teacher Thursday, Dec 10 2009

Dear Ms. Bray,

I’ve learn a lot of information over this English course that I plan on using in the future. I have learn different types of writing that  include descriptive/narrative, expository, critical, persuasive, and research writing. Not only have I learned how to express myself through writing and verbal communications, I have also learned to value it. I am now a better writer, not because I have away with word or a big vocabulary, but because I’ve learn to appreciate and enjoy it. Whenever I am writing, I feel like nothing else matters. It’s like everything that I can’t say in front of people I can express it through writing. It’s truly an escape from life. I hope that I will learn as much information as I did this semester, next semester and expand my use of vocabulary and writing strategies. Thank you so much for giving me the tools I needed inorder to be a successful writer. It was truly an honor to be a one of your students.

Katherine Drexel takes pride in Xavier Thursday, Dec 10 2009

Katharine bought a tract of undeveloped land for a campus on the corner of Palmetto and Pine Streets in 1929. Construction of the U-shaped, gothic administration building (now a city landmark) was completed in 1933. I believe that Xavier has improved extremely since then. Xavier is an HBCU that has the reputation of having giving excellent business opportunities. It is also a “well rounded” university with unique characteristics. Even though the city where Xavier is located has a bad criminal rating, the on campus security is at the top of the line. Not only is Xavier a beautiful  school that is close to New Orleans French Quarters, It is also only a five hour drive from my hometown Houston, Texas. I love Xavier University of Louisiana. I think that Katerine would be very proud to see how Xavier University of Louisiana has progressed and has and will continue to have a very successful graduation rate.

what would Obama’s father think about the book Tuesday, Dec 8 2009

In the book, Obama makes it clear that his father is not the man he wants him to be. As a child, his father ,Berry, was never around so Obama would make up fictional stories about him in order to make him appear to be a better man then he was. Although Obama seem to have little to no respect for his father as a child, as he grows up and matures into an adult, he realizes that although his father is not the man he wants him to be, he is still his father and he respects that. Obama talks alot about his father and the different things he has learn from him. I think that Obama’s father would be very impression by obama’s accomplishments and greatful to have him as a son.

It’s like everything that I can’t say in front of people I can express it through writing. It’s like an escape from life. I also love my English teacher; she is a wonderful teacher that lets me be me.

How has poverty benefited New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Monday, Oct 12 2009

The onslaught of Hurricane Katrina and the chaos of evacuation caused New Orleans’ economy and social structure to fail. News coverage of the overcrowded Superdome and the city’s flooded streets exposed the poverty and vulnerability of many residents, especially African Americans. The majority of the populations in New Orleans that were affected by the hurricane were the elderly, people with physical and mental disabilities, and single mothers out of the labor market. These groups had the highest poverty rates and the fewest assets. Most were African American. Many depended on the social safety net for survival, yet didn’t received what they desired. Many of the rebuilding proposals that were discussed were for the rebuilding of New Orleans by better schools and making New Orleans a stronger job market by employing more citizens. But what about the elderly people, people with physical and mental disabilities, and single mothers ?,These are the people that have had the worst affects from Hurricane Katrina, yet the least help from Fema

What type of leadership skills do you posess? Monday, Oct 12 2009

A leader is someone that takes charge when no one else will. A leader is a person who rules or guides or inspires others one important quality of a good leader is confidence. As a leader, if you don’t have confidence and believe in yourself, then no one else will. All leaders need respect: respect for themselves, respect for others, and most importantly, respect from others. In addition, in order to lead, one must have a sturdy set of moral values and discipline. I feel that I am a good leader because I carry all of these traits within myself. I use them effectively. As a leader, I posses moral values, confidence, discipline, and respect. I always fulfill whatever it is that I say I will fulfill. I carry the most valuable trait of a leader, and that is to develop more good leaders.

Why did you choose to come to Xavier? Monday, Oct 12 2009

My whole life I have wanted to attend a HBCU. HBCU’s with good reputations and excellent academic rankings are hard to find. On my search to find the “perfect” school, I came across Xavier University of Louisiana. Xavier is an HBCU that has the reputation of having giving excellent business opportunities. It is also a “well rounded” university with unique characteristics. Even though the city where Xavier is located has a bad criminal rating, the on campus security is at the top of the line. Not only is Xavier a beautiful and close to New Orleans French Quarters, It is also only a five hour drive from my hometown Houston, Texas. As I weigh all the pros and cons of Xavier University of Louisiana, I realized that the cons outweighed the pros and decided that Xavier is where I belonged. I love Xavier University of Louisiana.
