St. Katherine Drexel Sunday, Oct 11 2009

“Saint Katharine Drexel, Religious (Feast Day-March 3) Born in 1858, into a prominent Philadelphia family, Katharine became imbued with love for God and neighbor. She took an avid interest in the material and spiritual well-being of black and native Americans. She began by donating money but soon concluded that more was needed – the lacking ingredient was people. Katharine founded the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored People, whose members would work for the betterment of those they were called to serve. From the age of 33 until her death in 1955, she dedicated her life and a fortune of 20 million dollars to this work. In 1894, Mother Drexel took part in opening the first mission school for Indians, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Other schools quickly followed – for Native Americans west of theMississippi River, and for the blacks in the southern part of the United States. In 1915 she also founded Xavier University in New Orleans. At her death there were more than 500 Sisters teaching in 63 schools throughout the country. Katharine was beatified by PopeJohn Paul II on November 20, 1988.”

I believe that she would be very proud because we are continuing to graduate successful black students here at Xavier.

Favorite class at Xavier and why? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

My favorite class at Xavier would have to be my freshman seminar  class because we sit and discuss different matters and not just the same old boring thing for a whole week. We don’t have tests or quizzes and I feel very comfortable there. In alot of my classes we have may bring lectures about things that I believe are sometimes irrelevant. Mr. Homan is funny and many of the people in class entertain me. I like going online and posting these blogs instead of doing take home homework because I’m always on the computer anyway. It makes it a lot easier on me and that fact that we only have one assignment per week is a beautiful thing!

How has poverty benefitted New Orleans? How has it hurt New Orleans? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I personally am not a permanent resident of New Orleans but in my opinion poverty has benefitted New Orleans in one crucial way. After Katrina hit many people were out of a home or a place to stay. Some people had their houses rebuilt but others were forced to live on the streets. Because the amount of poverty was broadcasted on people’s televisions, it brought volunteers  to New Orleans. Many people have donated their time and money to help improve the city. There are some parts of New Orleans that look better than ever before because of volunteer efforts. Poverty has hurt New Orleans because it has become an unsafe place to live due to all the crime and homeless people on the streets. There are many streets that people cannot go down at certain times of the night or even at all.

My Professional Plans and how Xavier’s mission affects them. Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I plan to be a fashion journalist for Vogue Magazine. I am a Mass Communications major and as of right now I work for the newspaper taking photographs. I think it would be alot of work starting off trying to be the editor for our school’s  so I write a few articles here and there. I’ve always had an eye for fashion and I believe I’m an excellent writer. Xavier’s mission ensures that I will get the best education possible and I have the upmost belief in this. I feel that as a student here I will be very well rounded when the time comes for me to enter the professional world. I’ve already met so many people while participating in activities that have to do with my major. At first I wondered if I would get the mass communications education for the field job that I want but after the second day of school I knew that this is exactly where I needed to be.

What type of leadership skills do you posess? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I have always been a leader every since the day I could walk.  I pride myself on the fact that I do not like to be told what to do and would much rather handle a situation on my own than be given instructions from someone else. I am very vocal and like to communicate and I think that is crucial if a person wants to be a leader. It is very important that you understand me and I understand you if we are trying to have a conversation. I am also not a shy person. I admit, once upon a time I was very shy but as I grew older I grew out of that phase. I can walk up to just about anyone and introduce myself. When I came here to Xavier I found that it was essential that I was not shy. I’ve met so many great people by simply walking up to them and striking a conversation!

What would Barack Obama’s father think about his book? Sunday, Oct 11 2009

I believe that Barack Obama’s father would be very proud of him for writing such an amazing book. Obama told a very real story about his childhood and growing up that I believed to be accurate and honest. His depiction of his father made me respect him as a person even though I had never met the man. The book was written before Obama was elected for President so we get to see a different side of him that he might not have shared once he was inducted into the White House. Obama’s father would be very proud of his sons accomplishments and I believe this book would have made him even happier. Many parents brag about their children and the most an average parent could say was that their son or daughter received a promotion at work or purchased a new car but Barack Obama’s father can say that his son became the first black president.

Why did I chose to come to Xavier? Tuesday, Sep 29 2009

I chose to come to Xavier because I wanted to attend a historically black college. It has always been a dream of mine to be amongst people that are just like me skin color wise but have a variety of views. I applied to five colleges and four of them were black institutes. I wanted the whole sorority and fraternity experience also. When I received my acceptance letter in the mail it was such a blessing. My family is from Louisiana and I wanted to get in touch with my roots because I’ve never come to visit. I thought it would be fun to surround myself with New Orleans culture and people just like myself. There was also the factor of staying close to home. I wanted to get away from my parents and attending the University of La Verne would not earn me that freedom. Xavier University was my number two choice but I am very happy with my decision.
