Senior Interview Wednesday, Nov 25 2009

I interviewed upperclassman, Breannie Charles. She is my chemsitry drill instructor. I interviewed her concerning her opinion on Xavier’s mission and how it is being fulfilled. This was her reply:

One of the main areas I believe Xavier University is fulfilling its mission statement is through community service and research. Although Xavier is a small campus and we are small in numbers there is a lot of opportunity to get involved in community service especially in a city that has much rebuilding and renovation left to be accomplished. Programs such as Habitat for Humanity and Ninth Ward Cleanup have really involved students in service towards the community. As a pharmacy student in the college of pharmacy, one of the areas I have also noticed that Xavier University is fulfilling its mission statement is through research. Through research Xavier has taken on a mission to tackle health disparities in minority communities such as New Orleans. Xavier University has taken on a leadership role through its center for research in health disparities to alleviate health problems in the community. I believe by trying to alleviate health disparities amongst minority communities Xavier University is fulfilling it’s goal of creating a more just and humane society.

Teacher Appreciation Monday, Nov 23 2009

Hello Dr. Privett, my name is LaTasha Henderson and as a part of my freshman seminar class we are suppose to email our most influential teacher. I just want to take the time out to thank you for being so dedicated to your work and understanding of your students. It is very nice that you take the time out of your schedule to hold review sessions aside from class time. You are very cordial in giving assistance when students need it. I enjoyed you being my professor for General Chemistry throughout the summer as well as this semester.

St. Katherine Drexel Saturday, Nov 7 2009

St. Katherine founded around 60 mission schools all over the United States. Her first school was for Indian Americans. The school which she founded that we can identify with the most would be Xavier University of Louisiana. It was St. Katherine Drexel along with the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament that founded Xavier in hopes of educating colored Americans. Xavier staff continues to do just that, not only African Americans but all who seek knowledge. The students of Xavier excell in their endeavors. The professors are very helpful and considerate. St. Katherine Drexel had a helpful spirit and I think she would be please with the helpful nature of Xavier today. Xavier has become one of the top Historically Black Universities and continues to fulfill the mission statement each year with successful commencement exercises. The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament continue to educate the students. Catholic ceremonies continue to be held and Xavier remains grounded in its Catholic origins.

Would Barack Obama’s father be proud of his book? Monday, Oct 12 2009

Barack Obama’s father would probably be pleased with the book and how Barack progresses in life. He outlines many experiences he went through and how they bettered him as a person. Little did he know that this would result in his election as president of the United States. I’m sure his father would be proud of these accomplishments. Barack learns many valuable lessons throughout the book and most of all it was important for him to learn to be proud of his heritage as well as his father. Obama discusses racism a great deal which doesn’t appear to be a major issue now  with him. Therefore most of all his father would be proud that he overcame all the issues and learned from each situation. If his father read the book, he would see how some of his actions directly affected Barack’s life but in all made him a better person.

What is your favorite class at Xavier and why? Monday, Oct 12 2009

So far, General Chemistry is my favorite course at Xavier. I came during the summer to take Chemistry 1010 as a part of the Howard Hughes Biomedical Scholars Summer Program and I thoroughly enjoyed the course. It was challenging but not too difficult. I excelled and completed the course with a strong A. I am currently enrolled in Chemistry 1020 and it seems to be going well so far. Dr. Ann Privett has been my teacher for both courses and she is excellent at what she does. She shows that she cares and her review sessions are quite beneficial. The module handbook by Xavier faculty is very organized. I feel that my success in this course can greatly be attributed to my study skills as well as the fact that we have practice exams so that we are acquainted with the format of each test in advance. I hope that I continue to keep an A and enjoy General Chemistry.

How has poverty benefited and hurt New Orleans? Monday, Oct 12 2009

Poverty is an issue all over the country and around a great deal of the world. In particular New Orleans has felt the effects of poverty in recent years more than ever. Due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 many New Orleans natives were deeply impoverished. The storm caused great losses and required a great deal of renovation to various areas. New Orleans is unique in it’s own way. Poverty has hurt New Orleans in that certain areas appear to be very run-down and deserted while it has helped other areas to thrive such as the downtown/Canal Street area. As I think of poverty, I can’t understand how it can benefit a city but New Orleans probably would not be as diverse without it’s impoverished aspects. I do consider poverty more of a detriment to the city especially for the citizens who have suffered so much. I don’t see poverty being reversed anytime soon but I do hope that the city will be more prosperous in the years to come.

Why did I choose Xavier? Monday, Oct 12 2009

My decision to attend Xavier is one that I hope will be beneficial to me. As a senior in high school, I had two colleges of which I desired to attend. These were Spelman College and Xavier University. I had always dreamed of going to Spelman but later learned about Xavier’s outstanding academic reputation. Since Xavier is number one in placing african americans into medical school and I desire to become a physician it was fitting that I make Xavier my home for the next four years. I also considered distance form home as a factor in my decision. Spelman is 10 hours from home whereas Xavier is 5 hours form home. I can also appreciate the fact that I am allowed to have my car as a freshman. My parents were very supportive of my decision and I hope this is a decision that they will be proud of in May of 2013 at commencement.

Leadership Skills Monday, Oct 12 2009

I feel as though I possess great leadership skills. I have not held many offices but I have  done outstanding with the ones I have held. I am not one to be exceedingly willing to go through the whole campaign process to hold offices therefore I don’t typically get elected. During my high school years I held the office of Vice- President for one year and President the next year of an organization by the name of Phi Delta Kappa Youth. This office carried a great deal of responsibilty. I held the office of Secretary in my Girl Scout Troop. At church I was the announcing clerk and held various offices over the years in the youth department. In my sophomore year of high school I was captain of the Junior Varsity Pony Express dance team. This was a wonderful experience. The people I looked over seemed to always be satisfied and have no complaints about my skills. I was pleased with the offices  I held and I plan to hold more in the future.

My professional plans & Xavier’s mission Monday, Oct 12 2009

Upon my decision to attend Xavier, my intentions were to become a health physician and I hope for them to remain that way until I have attained that goal. Xavier is a historically black school and it gives me great pleasure to know that I attend one of the best HBCUs. It has been stated that Xavier’s purpose is “to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service.” This accurately describes my goals. I intend to lead one day as a medical doctor and promote wellness and humanity amongst those I come in contact with in my profession. Xavier exhibits the diversity I need in it’s faculty as well as student body. The ideals this school was built upon will definitely contribute to my success. Xavier’s outstanding reputation left me no other option when it came to picking a school fit for my career plan. If the school truly measures up to what it’s mission says, these will be a wonderful four years and upon graduation I will be just where I need to be, on the road to becoming a successful doctor.
