Since I am not from New Orleans, I cannot really say how poverty has really helped or hurt New Orleans, but I can speak on how it has helped and hurt my city. I am from Washington, DC, and although we are know for our great monuments and museums, we also have our share of poverty. Poverty has helped my city, because it brings us closer together. When one person is not able to afford something, they know that they can depend on a neighbor or friend, in order to get what they need. At the same time poverty has hurt my city, because it does not allow people to receive the proper tools in order to survive in life such as education and housing. Not being able to have these basic things, may cause one to commit violent acts such as stealing, or in even worse cases, stealing.

One does not have to be from this city to speak on poverty. No matter what state your from we all still live in the US. We all have the same economc problems and we all operate under the same corrput system. So in speaking on poverty for New Orleans, which was the topic, you should speak on any injustice you see just from walking down the street. Raise the question of why do we have such a poor education system or why the streets in new orleans so messed up due to the government using tax dollars for whatever else.

This can be true, but not in all cases. For example I am from Washington, DC, and one of the main reasons I feel people fall below the poverty line is due to the lack of job openings in the city. On the other hand my roommate who is from New Orleans, feels that people here fall below the poverty line, due to the educational system, which does not prepare its’ students to enter the world of work, and in some cases college. Yet if someone were to say that a city like Boston is below poverty because of their school system, that would be false, because Boston is known for having an excellent school system. I believe that every city in the US is not in poverty for the same reasons. It depends on the region in which you live, and the people who you elect to represent your state.
